📍About the ARTIST
곽지수(b. 1993)는 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 시각예술가이다. 조각, 드로잉, 설치를 중심으로 작업하며 말로는 충분히 설명되지 않는 슬픔과 정서의 미세한 흔적, 사람 사이에 형성되는 감정의 압력과 균열에 주목해왔다. 얇고 연약한 철사와 종이, 천, 익명의 신체 이미지 등 가벼운 재료를 사용해 단단한 중심 없이 서로 기대어 존재하는 불안정한 구조를 만들어, 비 언어적 경험이 지닌 물리적 감각을 조각적으로 탐구한다.
서울대학교 미술대학 조소과에서 석사를 마치고 현재 동 대학원 박사과정에 재학 중이며, 시카고 아트 인스티튜트(School of the Art Institute of Chicago)에서 학부 과정을 졸업했다. 주요 개인전으로 Bedtime Story (WWW SPACE 2, 서울), Last Strongholds (우석갤러리, 서울)가 있으며, Corpus (더 스토어 남산, 서울), Flüchtige Besetzung (Maxi.Kunst, 뉘른베르크), In-Between States (ACRE Projects, 시카고) 등 국내외 다수의 단체전에 참여했다.
Kwak Jisu is a visual artist based in Seoul. Working primarily across sculpture, drawing, and installation, she focuses on the subtle traces of sorrow and emotions that elude verbal explanation, as well as the emotional pressures and fissures formed between people. By utilizing lightweight and fragile materials—such as thin wire, paper, cloth, and anonymous body imagery—she creates unstable structures that lean on one another without a solid center. Through this approach, she sculpturally explores the physical sensations inherent in non-verbal experiences.
Kwak earned her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and her MFA in Sculpture from Seoul National University, where she is currently a doctoral student. Her major solo exhibitions include 𝘉𝘦𝘥𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺(WWW SPACE 2, Seoul) and 𝘓𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘴 (Woosuk Gallery, Seoul). She has also participated in numerous domestic and international group exhibitions, including 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘶𝘴 (The Store Namsan, Seoul), 𝘍𝘭ü𝘤𝘩𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘦 𝘉𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘻𝘶𝘯𝘨 (Maxi.Kunst, Nuremberg), and 𝘐𝘯-𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 (ACRE Projects, Chicago).
