붓질은 없음으로 가득 차있는 생성공간에 현존(現存)의 형태로 있음을 드러나게 하는 행위다. 최초의 붓질은 공백을 여백으로 깨어나게 만든다. 이어지는 붓질들은 여백에 숨어 있는 보이지 않는 있음들을 죽비처럼 깨운다. 특수제작한 붓대는 매우 길다. 팔과 손목, 손가락만으로는 운용불가인 거대한 크기다. 온몸을 다 써야 필획 하나가 그어진다. 필세가 너무 강력해서 붓을 긋는다기보다는 붓으로 광목을 두드리는 기세에 더 가깝다.

The brushstroke is the act of making being appear, in the form of presence, within a space of generation that is filled with non-being. The first stroke wakes blank space into yeobaek. The strokes that follow rouse the invisible beings hidden in the yeobaek, striking them awake like a ’jukbi,‘ the bamboo clapper of the meditation hall. His custom-made brush handles are extremely long—of a scale impossible to manage with arm, wrist, and fingers alone. The whole body must be used before a single stroke is drawn. The momentum of the stroke is so powerful that it is less a matter of drawing with the brush than of the force with which the brush strikes the cotton.

아트사이드 갤러리 전속 작가 곽지수(곽지수 Ji Su Kwak )는 2026년 9월 25일부터 11월 15일까지 《New (Sur)face 新(表)面》 단체전에 참여합니다.

본 전시는 중국 서남 지역 기반의 현대미술 프로젝트 ’XINAN Repository‘가 충칭에서 선보이는 첫 번째 전시 《###L Image Basin》의 세 개 섹션 중 하나인 《New (Sur)face》입니다. 이미지가 평면을 넘어 물질, 공간, 신체와 관계 맺으며 만들어내는 새로운 감각에 주목하며, 한국과 중국을 비롯한 다국적 작가 12명이 함께합니다. 많은 관심 부탁드립니다.

ARTSIDE Gallery is pleased to announce that represented artist Jisu Kwak is participating in the group exhibition 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦, running from September 25 to November 15, 2026.
This exhibition is one of three sections in 𝘟𝘟𝘟𝘓 𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘉𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯, the inaugural project in Chongqing presented by the Southwest China-based contemporary art initiative ’XINAN Repository‘. Focusing on the new senses created as images transcend the flat plane to interact with materials, space, and the body, it features 12 artists from Korea, China, and beyond. 김호득은 오랫동안 누르스럼한 빛깔의 광목을 사용해왔다. 처음에는 가격이 싸서 사용했다. 지금은 비싼 캔버스 위에 광목을 덧대어 사용한다. 과거에는 린넨에 젯소칠을 한 후 본 블랙(bone black)의 아크릴칼라를 써 본 적도 있었다. 먹과는 감각이 많이 달랐다. 새하얀 젯소 칠로 표면이 매끌매끌해진 캔버스가 보여주는 평면공간의 느낌과는 달리, 흰 바탕에 누르스럼한 빛깔을 띤 까칠한 표면의 광목은 면면하게 이어온 오랜 정신성을 적재한 공간으로도 보인다. ‘희다’라고 하는 데에는 두 가지 의미가 있다. 하나는 색상이 희다(白)라는 것이고 또 하나는 본질적인 바탕(素)이라는 것을 뜻한다. 김호득은 광목의 백(白)보다는 광목의 소(素)에 더 기대려 한다. 누르스럼한 흰색의 광목은 한국인에게 오랫동안 친숙한 정신성으로서의 바탕(素)이다. 그 바탕에 아교칠을 하고 먹물로 붓질을 하니 재료와 정신의 다툼이 일어나지 않았다.

Kim Ho-deuk has long used cotton cloth of a yellowish cast. At first he used it because it was cheap. Now he lays the cotton over expensive canvas. In the past he also tried bone black acrylic on gesso-primed linen. The feel was very different from ink. Unlike the flat-space sensation of a canvas made slick by a coat of bright white gesso, cotton cloth—a white ground tinged yellowish, its surface rough—can also be seen as a space loaded with a long, unbroken spirituality. Calling something ‘white’ can carry two senses. One is white as a color. The other is white as the plain, unbleached ground of a thing—its raw, essential base. Kim Ho-deuk leans less on the cotton‘s whiteness as color than on this whiteness as ground—its plainness. For Koreans, cotton of a yellowish white has long been just such a ground, one that carries a spirituality of its own. When the ground is sized with glue and worked with ink, no quarrel arises between material and spirit.

동양화에서는 오랫동안 여백의 중요성을 강조해왔다. 여백은 공백과 다르다. 공백은 그냥 비어있는 없음의 세계다. 여백은 비어있는 듯 보이나 있음을 생성하는 세계다. 여백은 근본적으로는 있음의 세계이긴 하나 현상적으로는 비가시적인 세계이다. 비가시적인 세계를 피상적으로 무(無)라고 표현하기도 하나, 여백에서의 무는 어디까지나 유(有)를 생성하는 무(無)로 보아야 한다.
데카르트 이후 근대를 열었던 공백성(空白性 blankness) 공간 위에 선 무(無)는 그야말로 텅 비어있는 없음의 세계일 뿐이다. 공백은 무근거(Ungrund)가 되어 어떤 있음도 잉태하거나 생성하지 못한다. 여백은 현상적으로는 텅 비어있어 보이나 근본적으로 적재성(積載性 loadedness)의 공간이다. 이 경우 여백의 무(無)는 탈근거(Ab-grund)로서의 무(無)가 된다. 탈근거의 빈자리에 붓질 하나가 더해지면 홀연히 여백이 돋아난다. 탈근거였던 여백은 이제 생기(生起)의 근거(Grund)로 전환하여 진공묘유(眞空妙有)가 된다.

East Asian painting has long insisted on the importance of yeobaek. Yeobaek is not the same as blank space. Blank space is simply a world of vacancy, of non-being. Yeobaek appears vacant, yet it is a world that generates being. Fundamentally it is a world of being, though phenomenally it remains invisible. That invisible world is sometimes described, superficially, as nothingness; but the nothingness of yeobaek must always be understood as a nothingness that generates being.
The nothingness that stands upon the space of blankness—the space that inaugurated modernity after Descartes—is nothing more than a world of sheer, empty absence. Blank space becomes groundlessness (Ungrund) and can neither conceive nor generate any being whatsoever. Yeobaek, phenomenally, looks utterly empty, yet is fundamentally a space of loadedness. Here the nothingness of yeobaek becomes a nothingness that is de-grounding (Ab-grund). Add a single brushstroke to that de-grounded emptiness and yeobaek suddenly springs up. The yeobaek that had been de-grounding now converts into the ground (Grund) of arising, becoming true emptiness, wondrous being.

LA에서 활동하고 있는 전혜신(b.1983)은 2014년 시카고 예술대학에서 학사 학위를 받았다. 전혜신의 작품은 일상의 평범한 장면들을 자신만의 감각적인 시선으로 변주하여 비현실적인 회화적 공간으로 전환하는 데 초점을 맞춘다. 그에게 유화라는 매체는 단순한 도구를 넘어, 작가 내면의 감정을 형태와 색채의 끊임없는 변화로 구현해내는 역동적인 언어이다. 작품 속 사물과 인물들은 작가의 일상적 경험을 바탕으로 하되, 왜곡된 윤곽과 평면적으로 압축된 차원, 그리고 미묘한 빛의 움직임을 통해 실제와 환상, 깨어 있는 상태와 꿈의 경계 어딘가에 놓인 듯한 신비롭고 사적인 서사를 형성한다.

Based in Los Angeles, Chun Hyeshin (b. 1983) received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2014. Her work focuses on transforming ordinary scenes of daily life into surreal pictorial spaces through her unique, sensory perspective. For Chun, the medium of oil paint serves as more than a simple tool; it is a dynamic language through which she manifests her inner emotions into continuous shifts of form and color. While the objects and figures in her paintings are rooted in her everyday experiences, they form a mysterious and intimate narrative that seems to exist somewhere on the boundary between reality and fantasy, waking life and dreams—conveyed through distorted contours, planarly compressed dimensions, and subtle movements of light.

Kwak Jisu (b.1993) is a Seoul-based visual artist working primarily in sculpture, drawing, and installation. She focuses on the subtle traces of grief and emotion that defy verbal explanation, as well as the emotional pressures and cracks formed between people. Using lightweight materials such as thin, fragile wire, paper, fabric, and anonymous bodily images, Kwak creates unstable structures that exist by leaning on one another without a solid center, sculpturally exploring the physical sensations of non-verbal experiences.

As the first step of this journey, Kwak Jisu has been selected for the special exhibition 𝘏𝘜𝘔𝘈𝘓 at Kiaf SEOUL 2026 this September, where she will present her distinct artistic world through a solo booth. The special exhibition 𝘏𝘜𝘔𝘈𝘓 sheds light on human instinct, physical senses, and vitality in the age of technology.

Encompassing sculpture, drawing, and installation, Kwak continuously pays attention to the subtle traces of emotion and unspeakable grief, as well as the emotional pressures and cracks formed within human relationships.
