한상수 선생은 1953년부터 국전에서 특선과 입선 등을 연이어 수상하고 국전 등단작가로서 10여회의 개인전을 통해 현대자수작품을 발표하였다. 70년대 이르러 전국에 흩어진 옛자수 유물을 모으면서 원형기술을 분석하여 복원하고, 안주수 장인 오형율 옹에게 안주수를 전수받아 광복이후 전승공예로 일컬어졌던 우리 자수를 "전통자수"라고 이름지었다. 1974년에 조선시대의 유물을 한데 모아 종로구 견지동에 위치한 에서 국내최초로 전시하였으며 동시에 책을 출간하여 학계의 관심과 주목을 모았다.

다음은 생전 한상수 자수장의 인터뷰 기사이다.

Since 1953, Master Han Sang-soo won consecutive Special Selections and Selections at the National Art Exhibition. As an established artist of the National Art Exhibition, she presented contemporary embroidery works through more than 10 solo exhibitions. In the 1970s, she began collecting old embroidery artifacts scattered across the country, analyzing and restoring their original techniques. She learned Anju embroidery from the Anju embroidery master Oh Hyung-yul, and officially named our embroidery—which had been referred to as a "transmitted craft" since liberation—as "Traditional Embroidery." In 1974, she gathered Joseon Dynasty artifacts and held the nation's first exhibition at the Surimwon Permanent Embroidery Exhibition Hall located in Gyeonji-dong, Jongno-gu. At the same time, she published the book Yi Dynasty Embroidery, drawing significant attention from academia.

호림박물관 신사분관 에 출품된 한상수자수박물관 소장 수림 한상수님의 작품들입니다.
위의 '모란6곡자수병풍'은 48년전 그가 설립한 종로구 견지동의 견지화랑에서 제12회 전통자수전에 발표된 작품입니다.

80년대 이르러 한상수 선생님의 호를 딴 수림원자수연구소가 강남으로 이전하면서 현대백화점에 이라는 전통혼례공예품전문점과 코엑스에 을 개설해 전통공예품을 대중에게 알리기시작했습니다.
이때부터 위의 작품과는 다른 궁중채색화의 모란8폭병풍을 자수작품으로 선보이자 예단혼수로 인기를 모으며 주문 제작됩니다.

Embroidery ExperienceParticipants had the special privilege of viewing a restored 1415 early-Joseon Dynasty lotus embroidery masterpiece. This piece won an award at the 5th Annual Traditional Craft Exhibition in 1980, created by the late Master Embroiderer Han Sang-soo. Inspired by this masterpiece, blue-eyed foreign girls dove into a hands-on embroidery experience, stitching the pattern line by line and falling completely in love with the timeless beauty of ancient Korean embroidery. Under the expert guidance of Museum Director Kim Young-ran—the eldest daughter and official successor of Master Han—and her student Haruko, everyone lost track of time, fully immersed in the elegant charm of this traditional craft.
