한국어에서 ‘언니’라는 말은 친밀함과 유대감을 함축하는 익숙한 호칭으로, 주로 여성이 같은 성별의 연장자를 지칭할 때 사용된다. 그러나 이 일상적인 단어 속에는 주체성, 성적 정체성, 공동체와 같은 문제들과 맞닿아 있는 사회 구조에 대한 전제들이 내재해 있다. 관계의 가까움을 드러내는 이 호칭은 우리가 어느 시점에서 누구를 ‘언니’로 지칭하는지를 되묻게 한다. 실제로 많은 퀴어 남성들도 나이와 상관없이 서로를 ‘언니’라고 부르는데, 이는 한국 사회에서 고정된 것처럼 보이는 젠더 역학이 확장되고 전복되어 왔다는 사실을 보여준다. 또 ‘언니’는 돌봄과 책임 사이의 균형을 내포하는 존재이기도 하다. 이번 전시는 이러한 다층적 의미를 통해 참여 작가들의 작업을 맥락화하고, 우리가 서로와 함께 존재하는 방식을 새롭게 생각해 보고자 한다.

For anyone that speaks the Korean language, ‘unni’ is immediately familiar as a term that signifies kinship and closeness, used by women to refer to older individuals of the same gender. Embedded in this everyday terminology are social structures that touch on subjectivity, sexuality, and community. Plenty of q***r men also call each other ‘unni’, suggesting how gender dynamics in Korea have been stretched and subverted. ‘Unni’ balances care and responsibility, as she is expected to guide the younger ones. By embracing its various layers as a framework, the exhibition seeks to identify the radical possibilities of this ordinary word that helps us reimagine how to exist with each other.

Sen Chung (b. 1963, lives and works in Seoul and Düsseldorf) describes his paintings as metaphorical windows, passages, or in-between spaces where inside and outside converge. Rooted in what he calls “painted philosophy,” his practice reflects on how beauty is constructed, balancing the flatness of the picture plane with a compositional language that unsettles the inherited meaning of symbols.

Min ha Park (b. 1984, Korea) constructs scenes in symbolic units of light, color, and form, responding to shifting conditions of air, energy, and illumination. Composing a distinct iconographical language, she renders the intangible in landscapes of memory, sensation, and atmosphere. Using silvery pigments that reflect or absorb light, Park captures moments where light and shadow intersect or coexist within a spatially dimensional field.

Hyun Nahm(b. 1990, Korea) constructs speculative landscapes through the sculptural exploration of the miniascape —a scaled-down, self-contained terrain reminiscent of scholar’s stones. Drawing from the East Asian tradition of chukgyeong, or “condensed scenery,” he translates classical modes of contemplating nature into sculptural forms that compress the material and perceptual textures of the contemporary world.

휘슬은 3월 20일(금)부터 5월 2일(토)까지 코먼웰스 앤 카운슬의 협업 전시 프로젝트 「Secret Asian Man presents: 언니(unni)」 1부를 개최한다. 본 프로젝트는 2025년부터 현재까지 LA 갤러리 전시 공간 일부에서 서로 다른 가제 아래 총 5회에 걸쳐 친밀하고 실험적인 형식의 전시로 기획되어 왔다. 휘슬에서 열리는 단체전 1부는 동일한 방식을 이어가며, 야마오카 캐리, 강동호, 박그림, 아이작 총 와이, 이강승, 김무영, 곽영준 등 총 7명의 작가가 참여한다. 2부 전시는 오는 4월 코먼웰스 앤 카운슬에서 이어질 예정이다.

Whistle is pleased to present 「Secret Asian Man Presents: 언니(unni)」, a collaborative exhibition with Commonwealth and Council (CwC). Since 2025, Secret Asian Man (SAM) has unfolded through a series of exhibitions situated in the liminal space of a doorway of within the gallery space of CwC. The rotating, double-sided walls of SAM, conflate clear delineation between front/back, inside/outside, here/there, me/you, us/them, and Asian/Agent. Sister exhibition, unni (언니) will open at Commonwealth and Council inon 4 April, 2026.
