뮤지엄한미 연구소는 1960년대 젊은 사진가 모임 현대사진연구회의 멤버였던 황규태, 주명덕, 박영숙, 조천용, 이영훈과 함께 구술프로젝트를 진행해 현대사진연구회를 함께했던 이들의 이야기를 뮤지엄한미 연구소 자료집 12호에 담았습니다.

현대사진연구회에 입회하게 된 계기부터 정기 품평회와 전시 준비 과정 등 연구회의 활동, 그리고 각자의 사진 인생에서 현대사진연구회가 어떤 의미였는지까지, 기록만으로는 전해지지 않았던 당시의 분위기와 그들의 열정을 생생하게 전합니다.

The members of the ’Modern Photography Society‘ have reunited.

Museum Hanmi Research Center conducted an Oral History Project with HWANG Kyu-Tae, JOO Myungduck, PARK Young-sook, CHO Cheon-Yong, and LEE Young Hun, all former members of the Modern Photography Society, a group of young photographers active in the 1960s. Their firsthand accounts are featured in the 12th issue of the Museum Hanmi Research Center Publication.

From how they joined the society to its regular critique sessions, exhibition preparations, and what the Modern Photography Society ultimately meant in each of their photographic journeys, this publication brings to life the atmosphere of the group and the passion of its members—stories that could never be fully conveyed through archival records alone.

2026 뮤지엄한미 아카데미( ) 정규과정 수강생들과 함께 강릉 촬영 워크숍을 진행했습니다. 이번 워크숍에는 Photo Craft, Photo Work, Photo Master 과정의 수강생들이 참여해 강릉의 아름다운 빛과 풍경을 카메라에 담으며 사진에 대한 열정과 경험을 나누었습니다.

Photo Craft는 기본적인 사진 이론을 바탕으로 다양한 촬영 기술을 익히며 사진의 기초를 다지는 과정이며, Photo Work는 사진예술에 필요한 이론과 기술을 심화 학습하고 작업 리뷰를 통해 완성도 높은 작품을 창작하는 과정입니다. Photo Master는 사진 창작에 필요한 핵심 역량을 발전시키고 자신만의 작품 세계를 구축해 연말 수료전을 통해 그 성과를 선보이는 심화 과정입니다.

서로 다른 과정의 수강생들이 한자리에 모인 이번 워크숍은 사진 작업에 대한 고민과 창작의 방향성을 나누며 교류하는 뜻깊은 시간이었습니다.

*뮤지엄한미 아카데미는 정규과정에서 깊이 다루기 어려운 영역을 보완하는 다양한 단기 강좌도 운영하고 있습니다. 오는 7월 초, 여름 단기과정의 수강생 모집이 시작될 예정이니 많은 관심 부탁드립니다.

In 2026, Museum Hanmi Academy( ) held a photography workshop in Gangneung with students enrolled in its regular programs. Participants from the Photo Craft, Photo Work, and Photo Master courses came together to capture the beautiful light and landscapes of Gangneung while sharing their passion for and experiences in photography.

Photo Craft is a foundational course that helps students build a solid understanding of photography through essential theories and a wide range of shooting techniques. Photo Work offers advanced study in the theories and technical skills required for photographic art, while encouraging the creation of refined works through in-depth critiques and reviews. Photo Master is an intensive program designed to develop the core competencies necessary for photographic practice, enabling participants to establish their own artistic vision and present the results in a year-end graduation exhibition.

Bringing together students from different programs, this workshop provided a meaningful opportunity to exchange ideas about photographic practice, discuss creative challenges, and explore diverse artistic directions.

*In addition to its regular programs, Museum Hanmi Academy also offers a variety of short-term courses that complement areas not easily covered in depth within the regular curriculum. Enrollment for the Summer Short-Term Courses will open in early July, and we look forward to your interest and participation.

뮤지엄한미 삼청별관에서 진행 중인 《김포 제리 율스만 기념관 프리뷰》에서는 기억과 상상이 교차하는 율스만의 대표작과 함께, 향후 김포 분관에 재현될 작업실과 암실의 모습을 미리 만나볼 수 있습니다.

2026년 개관 예정인 뮤지엄한미 김포 제리 율스만 기념관에는 그의 창작 세계를 이해할 수 있는 작업실과 암실이 재현될 예정입니다.

제리 율스만에게 암실은 단순히 사진을 인화하는 공간이 아니었습니다. 그는 암실을 ‘시각적 연구실’이라 부르며, 서로 다른 네거티브를 결합하고 수없이 빛을 조절하는 과정을 통해 새로운 이미지를 발견해 나갔습니다. 사진이 셔터를 누르는 순간 완성되는 것이 아니라, 암실에서의 탐색과 실험을 통해 비로소 탄생한다고 믿었던 것입니다.

한 장의 사진이 완성되기까지 이어졌던 그의 치열한 실험과 상상의 공간을 이번 전시를 통해 먼저 만나보시기 바랍니다.

At the Museum Hanmi Samcheong Annex, the ongoing exhibition 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬: 𝙅𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙮 𝙐𝙚𝙡𝙨𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙣 𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙃𝙖𝙡𝙡, 𝙂𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤 presents Uelsmann’s iconic works, where memory and imagination intersect, while offering a first look at the studio that will be recreated at Museum Hanmi Gimpo.

Scheduled to open in 2026, the Jerry Uelsmann Memorial Hall, Gimpo, will feature reconstructions of the artist’s studio and darkroom, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the environment that shaped his creative practice.

For Jerry Uelsmann, the darkroom was not simply a place for developing photographs. He referred to it as a ’visual research laboratory,‘ where he combined multiple negatives and carefully manipulated light to discover new images. He believed that a photograph was not completed when the shutter was released, but rather came into being through exploration and experimentation in the darkroom.

This exhibition offers an opportunity to experience the imaginative space and creative process behind Uelsmann’s work, and to encounter the world in which his photographs came to life.

기존 사진 문법에서 벗어나 자신들만의 ‘현대사진’을 향해 진격한 1960년대 젊은 사진가들.

뮤지엄한미연구소 자료집 12호는 1960년대 새로운 사진의 가능성을 고민했던 젊은 사진가 모임, ‘현대사진연구회’를 소개합니다. ‘현대사진연구회’는 서구 현대사진과 다양한 사진 표현 방식을 탐구하며 1960년대 한국사진의 실험적 실천과 모더니즘 담론을 넓혀 나갔습니다.

자료집에는 이들의 활동과 당시 한국사진의 흐름을 살펴보기 위해 2016년에 진행된 학술 컨퍼런스 《한국 현대사진과 ‘현대사진연구회’》의 논문과 관련 자료들이 함께 수록되어 있습니다.

Young photographers of the 1960s who broke away from conventional photographic conventions in search of their own vision of ’modern photography.‘

Museum Hanmi Research Center’s 12th issue introduces the ’Modern Photography Society,‘ a group of young photographers who explored new possibilities for photography in the 1960s. Through the study of Western modern photography and diverse photographic expressions, the group expanded experimental photographic practices and modernist discourse within the Korean photography scene.

The publication also includes papers from the 2016 academic conference 𝘒𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 ’𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺 𝘚𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘺‘, which revisited the group’s activities and the broader development of Korean photography at the time, along with related archival materials.

5월 30일(토), 뮤지엄한미 삼청본관에서 전시 연계 강연이 진행됩니다. 이번 강연에서는 #박영숙, #홍순태 작가의 작품 세계와 사진 미학을 깊이 있게 살펴보는 시간을 마련했습니다.

오후 2시부터 진행되는 박영숙 작가 강연에서는 약 60년에 걸친 주요 작업을 통해 작가의 시선 변화와 작업 세계를 살펴보며, 한국 현대사진의 흐름과 오늘날의 이미지 감각을 함께 탐구합니다.

오후 3시부터는 홍순태 작가 강연이 이어집니다. 홍순태 작가의 대표 작업을 중심으로 도시와 시대를 바라보는 시선, 그리고 다큐멘터리 사진의 의미를 함께 살펴봅니다. 사진 속 도시의 변화와 삶의 풍경을 통해 한 시대를 기록하는 사진의 가치를 되짚어보는 시간이 될 예정입니다.

각 작가를 연구하고 글을 집필해온 강연자들과 함께 작품 세계를 깊이 이해하는 시간이 될 예정입니다. 많은 관심과 참여 부탁드립니다.

On Saturday, May 30, Museum Hanmi Samcheong will host a special exhibition-related lecture program featuring photographers PARKYoungSook and HONGSoonTai.

Beginning at 2 PM, the lecture on PARK Young-Sook will explore the evolution of the artist’s perspective and body of work through major projects spanning nearly 60 years, while tracing the flow of Korean contemporary photography and its enduring visual sensibility today.

At 3 PM, the lecture on HONG Soon-Tai will focus on his representative works, examining his perspective on the city and the era, as well as the significance of documentary photography. Through images capturing urban transformation and everyday life, the program will revisit the value of photography as a record of its time.

The lectures will be led by speakers who have researched and written extensively on each artist, offering audiences an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of their work.

#홍순태 의 〈청계천〉 연작 작업입니다. 이번 전시에서는 홍순태의 〈청계천〉과 〈서울〉 연작을 통해 도시 서울이 지나온 시간의 흐름을 살펴볼 수 있습니다.

1960년대 청계천 판자촌의 생활풍경부터 삼일고가도로 완공 전후의 주변 모습, 서울역과 명동 일대의 산업화 속에 변화하는 도시의 모습까지, 홍순태는 평생의 터전인 서울과 그 안의 사람들의 일상을 꾸준히 기록해왔습니다.

약 반세기에 걸친 변화와 재건의 과정을 담은 그의 작업은 전통과 현대, 부조리와 화합이 교차하는 서울의 복합적인 얼굴을 보여줍니다.

This is a work from ’s 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘨𝘺𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘯 series. In this exhibition, visitors can trace the flow of time that the city of Seoul has undergone through his 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘨𝘺𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘯 and 𝘚𝘦𝘰𝘶𝘭 series.

From scenes of daily life in the Cheonggyecheon shantytowns of the 1960s to the surrounding areas before and after the completion of the Samil Overpass, and to the changing urban landscape shaped by industrialization in areas such as Seoul Station and Myeong-dong, HONG has consistently documented Seoul, his lifelong home, and the everyday lives of its people.

Spanning nearly half a century, his work captures the processes of transformation and reconstruction, revealing the complex face of Seoul where tradition and modernity, contradiction and harmony intersect.

전시 종료 𝐃-𝟗

전시의 마지막 섹션 ‘스튜디오 풍경’에서는 기리의 집 내부를 촬영한 〈Identikit〉 연작과 함께, 건축가 알도 로시와 화가 조르조 모란디의 스튜디오를 담은 작업을 소개합니다.

연작명 ‘Identikit’은 ‘몽타주’를 뜻하는 용어로, 여러 단서를 조합해 인물의 이미지를 구성하듯 기리는 집 안의 책과 음반 같은 일상 사물을 통해 부재하는 인물을 암시하는 초상을 구성했습니다. 각 공간의 풍경을 통해 그 공간에 머물렀던 인물들을 떠올려보는 시간을 가져보시길 바랍니다.

In the final section of the exhibition, ’Studio Landscapes‘, works featuring the interiors of Ghirri’s home from the 𝘐𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘬𝘪𝘵 series are presented alongside photographs of the studios of architect Aldo Rossi and painter Giorgio Morandi.

The series title ’Identikit‘ refers to a term meaning ’montage.‘ Much like assembling various clues to construct an image of a person, Ghirri creates portraits that suggest an absent figure through everyday objects—such as books and records—found within these spaces. Through these studio spaces, we invite you to reflect on the individuals who once inhabited them.
