[Closing] Future Elegy for a New Life

CHOI&CHOI Gallery’s group exhibition Future Elegy for a New Life, featuring Gijeong Goo, Hyunjin Park and Soeun Bae, comes to a close today.

Through the distinct perspectives of the three artists, the exhibition explored changing conditions of life, new forms of the body and the meaning of care. By reconsidering the relationships between humanity and technology, life and the environment, it invited us to reflect on the beings and relationships that may shape our future.

Our sincere thanks to Gijeong Goo, Hyunjin Park and Soeun Bae, whose works opened up thoughtful questions and rich encounters. We also thank everyone who visited the exhibition and shared their perspectives and conversations with us.

초이앤초이 갤러리의 구기정, 박현진, 배소은 3인전 《새로운 삶을 위한 미래의 비가》가 오늘 막을 내렸습니다.

이번 전시는 세 작가의 서로 다른 시선을 통해 변화하는 삶의 조건과 새로운 형태의 몸, 그리고 돌봄의 의미를 살펴보았습니다. 인간과 기술, 생명과 환경의 관계를 다시 바라보며, 앞으로 우리가 어떤 존재와 관계를 맺고 살아갈 수 있을지 함께 생각하는 시간이었습니다.

각자의 작품 세계를 통해 풍성한 질문과 감상의 시간을 만들어 주신 구기정, 박현진, 배소은 작가에게 진심으로 감사드립니다. 또한 전시를 찾아주시고 다양한 시선과 이야기를 나누어 주신 모든 분께 감사드립니다.

LOWLIT COLLECTIVE × HEOTEUN SALON

Our sincere thanks to LOWLIT COLLECTIVE for supporting the second edition of Heoteun Salon.

The name LOWLIT, meaning softly or dimly lit, reflects the studio’s interest in things that are easily overlooked. Working with small pieces of waste plastic often left out of conventional recycling processes, LOWLIT transforms discarded materials into furniture and objects with new purpose.

For Heoteun Salon #2, their chairs became part of the space where our guests experienced the exhibition and Noreum Machi’s music together.

Thank you to LOWLIT COLLECTIVE for being part of the evening.

두 번째 《허튼살롱》을 함께해 주신 로우리트 콜렉티브(LOWLIT COLLECTIVE)에 감사드립니다.

LOWLIT은 ‘낮게 밝혀진, 희미하게 빛나는’이라는 의미로, 쉽게 눈에 띄지 않고 지나치는 것들에 주목하는 로우리트의 태도를 담고 있습니다. 일반적인 재활용 과정에서 다뤄지기 어려운 작은 폐플라스틱을 새로운 소재로 만들어 가구와 오브제로 재탄생시킵니다.

이번 《허튼살롱 #2》에서는 로우리트의 의자가 관객들이 전시와 노름마치의 음악을 함께 경험하는 자리를 채워주었습니다.

[HEOTEUN SALON] 2nd Edition

On September 22, the second edition of Heoteun Salon took place at CHOI&CHOI Gallery Seoul.

This edition was presented alongside Future Elegy for a New Life, a three-person exhibition featuring Gijeong Goo, Hyunjin Park, and Soeun Bae. Inspired by the works of the three artists, Noreum Machi’s music offered another way to see, hear, and experience the exhibition.

Our sincere thanks to Noreum Machi and Artistic Director Juhong Kim for creating the performance with us, and to everyone who helped make the evening possible. Most of all, thank you to everyone who joined us and filled the gallery.

지난 9월 22일, 초이앤초이 갤러리에서 두 번째 《허튼살롱》이 열렸습니다.

이번 허튼살롱은 구기정, 박현진, 배소은 작가의 3인전 《새로운 삶을 위한 미래의 비가》와 함께했습니다. 세 작가의 작품에서 출발해 노름마치의 음악을 연결하며, 전시를 보고 듣고 감각하는 또 다른 방식을 함께 나누었습니다.

공연을 함께 만들어주신 노름마치와 김주홍 예술감독, 그리고 준비 과정에서 도움을 주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다. 무엇보다 자리를 가득 채워 함께해 주신 관객 여러분께 진심으로 감사드립니다.

[JAE HO JUNG] Artist Talk

On September 17, M.I MUSEUM welcomed guests to the Contemporary Art Salon as part of its private program. Centered on the theme “Meeting the Artist, Living with Art,” the evening opened with a solo performance by Juhong Kim, Artistic Director of Noreum Machi.

This was followed by an artist talk with Jae Ho Jung, moderated by Darla Nam, Director of CHOI&CHOI Gallery, offering guests a deeper understanding of the artist’s work and artistic world.

지난 9월 17일, M.I MUSEUM의 프라이빗 프로그램의 일환으로 Contemporary Art Salon이 진행되었습니다.

‘작가를 만나는 일, 작품을 곁에 두는 일’을 주제로 마련된 이번 행사는 노름마치 김주홍 예술감독의 솔로 공연으로 문을 열었습니다. 이어 초이앤초이 갤러리 남달라 디렉터의 진행으로 정재호 작가와의 아티스트 토크가 진행되었으며, 작가의 작품과 작업 세계를 더욱 가까이 이해하는 시간을 가졌습니다.

[DÜSSELDORF] Helena Parada Kim, Jae Ho Jung

CHOI&CHOI Gallery is pleased to announce that Helena Parada Kim and Jae Ho Jung are participating in 《ASIA POP》, a major group exhibition at the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf, Germany.

《ASIA POP》 is the first major exhibition in Germany dedicated to East Asian pop culture. Spanning approximately 1,200 square metres, the exhibition brings together around 400 exhibits encompassing comics, animation, K-Pop, video games, street food, fashion and beauty. From “Kawaii” characters and animated films by studios such as Studio Ghibli to games including 《Black Myth: Wukong》, the exhibition presents a vibrant panorama of East Asian popular culture.

While exploring pop culture as an aesthetic phenomenon, 《ASIA POP》 also examines “soft power”: the expansion of the political and economic influence of China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan through the global circulation of their cultural exports.

Visitors can engage with a range of interactive stations, from dancing to randomly selected K-Pop songs and playing popular video-game classics on consoles to posing at specially designed selfie points. They are also invited to share and reflect on their own experiences as fans.

Soeun Bae’s practice combines sculpture, technology, and performance to examine the
body through the politics of care, sexuality, and production. Focusing on vulnerable
bodies and experiences of isolation, dysfunction, and transformation, Bae creates hybrid,
mutable objects through processes of dissection, mechanization, and objectification.
Treated as embryos or incubators, her objects explore dependency, desire, attachment,
and recuperation while seeking autonomy and self-regulation. Through these evolving
forms, Bae pursues heightened sensory experiences and imagines new possibilities for
the body.

배소은은 조각, 기술, 퍼포먼스를 결합하여 돌봄, 섹슈얼리티, 생산의 정치학을 통해 신체의 의미를
탐구한다. 취약한 신체와 고립, 기능 이상, 변형의 경험에 주목하며, 해부, 기계화, 대상화의 과정을
통해 변화하는 하이브리드적 오브제를 만든다. 배소은에게 오브제는 배아나 인큐베이터와 같은
존재로, 의존, 욕망, 애착, 회복의 관계를 형성하는 동시에 자율성과 자기조절을 추구한다. 이러한
변화하는 형태를 통해 신체와 감각에 대한 새로운 가능성을 탐구한다.

Hyunjin Park is a Korean interdisciplinary artist and researcher based in New York and
Seoul. Working across sculpture, installation, performance, and video, she explores how
technology-driven capitalism reshapes traditions and reinforces boundaries between
the old and the new, the human and the non-human, and life and death—through
the representation and cultural significance of living creatures, a recurring motif in her
practice.

박현진은 뉴욕과 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 다학제적 예술가이자 연구자이다. 조각, 설치,
퍼포먼스, 영상 등 다양한 매체를 넘나들며 작업하는작가는 자신의 작업에서 반복적으로 등장하는
모티브인 생명체의 재현과 문화적 의미를 통해, 기술 중심의 자본주의가 전통을 어떻게 재편하고
구분을 강화하는지 탐구하며, 또한 이를 통해 과거와 현재, 인간과 비인간, 삶과 죽음 사이에 형성된
