[accumulation-일련번호]로 붙여진 박석원의 시리즈 작품은 캔버스 위에 한지를 붙인 평면으로, 그의 주요 조각 작품들처럼 ‘쌓는다’는 개념이 깔려 있다. 평면작업에서 쌓기는 우선 캔버스 위에 종이를 (붙여서)쌓는다는 물리적인 의미가 있고, 붙여진 종이들끼리도 쌓기라는 관계를 가진다. 수평선을 떠올리는 평행 방향의 배열을 포함해서, 여러 조합의 구성이 있다. 그의 평면 작업은 수직적으로 수평적으로 쌓이는 것이다. 박석원의 ‘쌓기’는 회화보다 더 중력의 지배를 받는 조각 작업에서 먼저 시작됐지만, 3차원과 2차원 간의 연동은 절묘하다. 같은 양식의 제목은 양자의 연속성을 암시한다.

“내 작업의 본질 중 하나가 분할이다. 무의식의 행위를 통해 분할, 분절, 특수한 소재를 갈라놓는다. 실상 물성이 분화되면서 외부공간으로 번져 나가는 과정의 구조 특성을 보여주지만 본질은 나의 신체행동을 통해서 나타나는 분화된 사물의 전개라는 점이다. 이것이 내 작업의 가장 중요한 본질이다. “

The serial works of Park Sukwon, identified by [accumulation-serial number], consist of flat surfaces where hanji (traditional Korean paper) is adhered to the canvas. This approach reflects the concept of “accumulation,” similar to his major sculptural pieces. In his two-dimensional artworks, the process of accumulating involves physically layering the paper onto the canvas through attachment. Moreover, the attached paper pieces also establish an accumulation relationship among themselves. There are diverse compositional arrangements in his works, including parallel alignments reminiscent of the horizon. His flat artworks involve tasks of vertical and horizontal accumulation. Although his “accumulation” concept originated with his gravity-influenced sculptural pieces, the relationship between three-dimensional and two-dimensional spaces is exquisitely maintained. The titles in the same style suggest continuity between the works with two different dimensions.

“One of the fundamental elements of my artistic practice revolves around division. Utilizing unconscious gestures, I explore division and segmentation by separating specific materials. While the material properties emerge through the fragmentation process as they extend into external space, the essence lies in the unfolding of fragmented objects through my physical movements. This essence constitutes the core of my artistic expression.”

작품의 블루 색상에 대해서 작가는 몸에 아픔으로 든 멍이기도, 치유이기도 하고 동시에 이상을 꿈꾸는 삶의 색이기도 하다며 작가 개인적으로 가장 좋아하는 색으로도 꼽았다.
물은 땅이라는 그릇에 담겨 있는 것으로 땅의 에너지를 표현하는 가장 좋은 재료이다. 지구의 중력에 의해 끊임없이 출렁이는 것이 바다의 파도이듯 땅의 움직임과 존재성을 가시적으로 보여주고 드러내는 역할을 하는 물을 화폭에 담은 은 그의 작품 세계관과 연결된다.

동양화를 전공하고 프랑스에서 오랜 시간 거주하고 작업해오며 동서양의 경계에 있는 채성필 작가의 정체성은 국적, 사상, 문화를 초월하여 흙이라는 물질로 귀결된다. 그의 독창적 작품 세계관에 주목하며 현대 사회 흐름 속에서 자연의 본질에 대하여 사유하는 시간을 접하기를 기대한다.

Regarding the blue color featured in Portrait d’eau (Portrait of Water), Chae Sung-Pil characterizes it as both a bruise, embodying pain, and a form of healing. He also sees it as the color of life, filled with dreams of ideals. He states that blue is the color he likes most.
Held within the vessel of the earth, water becomes the perfect medium for conveying the land’s energy. Much like the ocean’s waves continuously ripple under the influence of Earth’s gravity, the water in the painting Portrait d’eau (Portrait of Water) visibly captures and emphasizes the movement and essence of the land, shaping his artistic philosophy.

With a background in traditional Asian painting and years of experience living and working in France, Chae Sung-Pil’s identity lies at the crossroads of East and West. He transcends nationality, ideology, and culture, ultimately finding convergence in the materiality of earth.
