An almost forgotten Gem of Indonesia.

Run Island is a small island in the Banda Islands of Indonesia. It is about 3.2 kilometers long and one kilometer wide. In the 17th century, Run was one of the world's only sources of nutmeg. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) wanted to control the nutmeg trade from Run Island, and they were willing to do whatever it took to get it.

In 1665, the VOC attacked Run Island and defeated the English forces that were stationed there. The Dutch then took control of Run Island and destroyed all of the nutmeg trees. They also killed or enslaved the Bandanese people who lived on the island.

The English were furious about the loss of Run Island. They wanted revenge, but they also wanted to get their hands on the nutmeg that was growing on the island. In 1667, the English and Dutch signed the Treaty of Breda. As part of the treaty, the English agreed to give up Manhattan Island in exchange for Run Island.

The Treaty of Breda is often cited as one of the most lopsided trades in history. Manhattan Island is now one of the most valuable pieces of real estate in the world, while Run Island is a small, remote island with a population of just a few hundred people.

Balinese Vegetarian Lawar, Chicken or Pork Lawar.
Bali is home to unique cultures and foods. Lawar is one of the famous authentic dishes that you won’t miss.

As child of the island, I remember the word, ‘mebat’, which describes a situation when Balinese men gather to chop meat and prepare ingredients for cooking. This will happen mostly before ceremonial days. Groups of guys will get together to finely chop the meat and spices needed to make lawar, have a few beers or glasses of arak, and generally have a good time.... so mebat to me = to have a good time !

Lawar usually is made with pork or chicken meat, at Baliku we serve vegetarian, chicken or pork lawar. Let's mebat at Baliku.
