🌅 チュルリョーニス展｜海のソナタ
1908年の夏、婚約者ソフィヤとともにパランガで過ごした幸福な時期に構想・制作された「第5ソナタ（海のソナタ）」。永遠の生命の象徴としての海が、「アレグロ」「アンダンテ」「フィナーレ」の3楽章を通して描かれます。
波や泡沫、琥珀、帆船…⛵
こうしたモティーフによって、楽章ごとに異なるテンポやリズムを帯びながら、連作は展開していきます。
とりわけ「フィナーレ」では、それらをのみこむように大波が立ち上がり、連作全体を祝祭的に締めくくります。その頂に、小さな泡の連なりで記された画家のイニシャル「MKČ」にも、ぜひご注目ください 🫧
そして、本作の着想に際して、画家は葛飾北斎《神奈川沖浪裏》の構図とモティーフを参照したとも考えられています。

🌅 M. K. Čiurlionis: The Inner Constellation | Sonata of the Sea
Painted in the summer of 1908 during a happy stay in Palanga with his fiancée Sofija, ‘Sonata of the Sea’ is the fifth sonata cycle by Čiurlionis. Across its three movements—’Allegro,’ Andante,’ and ‘Finale’—the sea appears as a symbol of eternal life.
Waves, sea foam, amber, and sailing ships shape the rhythm of the work. In the ‘Finale,’ a great wave gathers these motifs together, and the artist’s initials, ‘MKČ,’ appear at its crest in a chain of small bubbles. 🫧
Čiurlionis is also thought to have referred to Hokusai’s ‘Under the Wave off Kanagawa.’
