本展は、作家が自身のアトリエ内に自らの手で設えた階段をモチーフとして制作された一群の絵画によって構成されます。制作は2026年に入ってから集中的に行われ、短期間で多数の作品が制作されました。これらの作品は全て、同一の階段を対象としています。
吉岡はこれまで、特定のモチーフを継続的に描く制作を行ってきました。宮大工の家系に生まれ、技術を反復によって習得する環境の中で、吉岡は名画の模写と反復を通じて絵画を学びました。その過程で得た方法は現在の制作にも適用されており、同様の構図や主題を繰り返し扱うことは吉岡作品の特徴となっています。
例えば、吉岡が2000年代半ば頃から現在に至るまで継続して扱っているモチーフに「コンビニ」があります。20年という長期にわたる制作の蓄積を経て、地方に点在するコンビニを描いた風景画の一群は、2025年に「コンビニ画五十六景」としてまとめられるに至っています。
これらの作品は、特定の出来事や状況を明確に提示するものではありませんが、見る側の記憶や経験と結びつき、それぞれの解釈を引き出す契機となっています。今回の階段をモチーフとした作品においても、同様に、反復される画面の中で異なる認識が生じる構造が確認されます。
階段画の制作は、吉岡のこうした継続的な制作姿勢の延長線上に位置づけられますが、短期間における集中的な制作過程と、階段というモチーフの特異性は周囲にも波及しました。その結果、同様のモチーフに関心を持つ動きや、それに応答する制作、展示が生じています。
本展は、階段画の誕生に焦点を当て、ごく短期間に制作された作品群を一つの空間に提示いたします。階段というモチーフを起点に、今後の様々な制作や展示、あるいは既存の領域を横断するような動きへと接続されていく機会となれば幸いです。階段画の空間をぜひ会場でご覧ください。

吉岡雅哉
1981年兵庫県神戸市生まれ。宮大工の家に生まれ育ち、伝統的な職人技術を習得し独立する一方、幼少の頃より西洋絵画を独学で学ぶ。現代性と民俗性が入り交じる田舎の景色を、様々な絵画様式によって描いている。

This exhibition consists of a body of paintings based on a staircase that the artist constructed himself in his studio. The works were produced intensively in early 2026, resulting in a large number of paintings within a short period of time. Although all of the works depict the same staircase, each painting is realized as a distinct image through variations in composition, distance, and lighting conditions.
Yoshioka has consistently worked with specific motifs over extended periods. Born into a family of temple carpenters, he learned painting through repetition and copying within an environment where technical skills are acquired through iterative practice. The methods developed through this process continue to inform his current work, and the repeated treatment of similar compositions and subjects is a defining characteristic of his practice.
One example is his long-term engagement with the motif of the convenience store, which he has explored since the mid-2000s. Through years of sustained production, a group of landscape paintings depicting convenience stores in regional areas was consolidated in 2025 under the title Fiftysix Convenience Stores.
These works do not present specific events or situations in a direct manner; instead, they engage the viewer’s memory and experience, prompting individual interpretations. A similar structure can be observed in the staircase paintings, where repeated images give rise to differing perceptions.
While the staircase paintings can be understood as an extension of Yoshioka’s ongoing practice, the intensity of their production over a short period and the particular nature of the staircase as a motif have also extended beyond the artist’s studio. This has led to the emergence of related interests, as well as works and exhibitions that respond to this motif.
This exhibition returns to the stage prior to such developments, focusing on the initial phase in which the staircase paintings began to take form. It presents, within a single space, the differences generated through repetition over a short period of time and the changes that emerge through their accumulation.

Masaya Yoshioka
Born in 1981 in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan. Raised in a family of temple carpenters, he mastered traditional craft techniques and became independent, while also studying Western painting on his own from an early age. His work depicts rural landscapes where contemporaneity and folk sensibilities intersect, rendered through a range of painterly styles.
