An oracle may be understood as a divine message.

It is not only a voice that speaks of the future,
but perhaps a voice arriving from the future into the present.

In contrast, the Buddhist idea of reincarnation invites us to see life as a stream flowing from the past into the present.

From the future to the present.
From the past to the present.

Where these two movements meet,
there is the moment we call “now.”

That is why what matters most may not be to fear the future,
nor to be bound by the past,
but to live fully in this very moment.

Perhaps every card is an invitation
to return to the present moment.



オラクルとは、神託として受け取ることができます。

それは未来を語る声であると同時に、
未来から現在へと届く声なのかもしれません。

一方、仏教の輪廻転生は、
過去から現在へと続いてきたいのちの流れを見つめる世界観です。

未来から現在へ。
過去から現在へ。

What can we learn today from the spiritual culture of the Renaissance?

Perhaps it is to see the world not only through efficiency or usefulness.

Myth, stars, philosophy, religion, art, and music.
Once, they were not felt as separate fields, but as parts of one vast cosmic order.

Today, knowledge is often divided into narrow categories, and things are easily judged by whether they are useful, fast, or practical.

And yet, to pause before something beautiful.
To listen to old images.
To sense the meaning hidden within symbols.

In these moments, there is a precious space that allows us to live more fully as human beings.

Tarot, too, may quietly illuminate the invisible connections between the world and the self within such a space.

I hope Tokyo Tarot Museum can be a small place where such a space can still be felt today.







ルネサンスの精神文化から、現代の私たちが学べること。

それは、世界を効率や実用だけで見ないことかもしれません。

神話、星、哲学、宗教、美術、音楽。
それらはかつて、別々のものではなく、ひとつの大きな宇宙の秩序として感じられていました。

現代は、知識が細かく分かれ、ものごとは「役に立つか」「早いか」で判断されがちです。

けれども、美しいものの前で立ち止まること。
古いイメージに耳を澄ませること。
象徴の奥にある意味を感じ取ること。

そこには、人間が人間らしく生きるための大切な余白があります。

タロットもまた、そうした余白の中で、世界と自分のあいだにある見えないつながりを静かに照らしてくれるのかもしれません。

The Renaissance was not simply an age in which art flourished.

It was also a time when the ancient gods, Platonic philosophy, Hermetic thought, astrology, Kabbalah, and the Christian worldview resonated with one another in complex ways.

In old manuscripts,
the memories of prayer, myth, and the stars seem to breathe quietly.

Tarot, too, developed its own symbolic world in resonance with the image culture of that age.







ルネサンスとは、単に美術が花開いた時代ではありません。

古代の神々、プラトン哲学、ヘルメス思想、占星術、カバラ、そしてキリスト教的世界観が、複雑に響き合った時代でもありました。

古い書物の中で、祈り、神話、星々の記憶が、静かに息づいているように感じます。

タロットもまた、そうした時代のイメージ文化と響き合いながら、独自の象徴の世界を育んでいきました。

The Salone dei Mesi — the Hall of the Months — at Palazzo Schifanoia in Ferrara.

Here, the twelve months, the zodiac, the decans, ancient gods, animals, urban life, and courtly power are woven together into one vast fresco cycle.

Time is not shown simply as something that passes.
It is imagined as an order in which the stars, the gods, and human life resonate with one another.

Tarot, too, is another symbolic language nurtured within the courtly culture of fifteenth-century Italy.

To read the cards is not only to look toward the future, but to read again the relationship between humanity and the cosmos through the images scattered throughout the world.

Standing before the frescoes of Schifanoia, I feel that tarot, while composed of individual cards, is also a small architecture of the universe.







フェラーラ、スキファノイア宮殿の「月の間」。

ここでは、十二か月、黄道十二宮、デカン、古代神、動物、都市の暮らし、そして宮廷の権力が、ひとつの壮大な壁画として結び合わされています。

時間は、単に過ぎ去るものではなく、星々と神々、人間の営みが響き合う秩序として描かれている。

タロットもまた、15世紀イタリアの宮廷文化の中で育まれた、もうひとつの象徴の言語です。

カードを読むことは、未来を探ることだけではなく、世界に散りばめられたイメージを通して、人間と宇宙の関係を読み直すことなのかもしれません。

スキファノイアの壁画の前に立つと、
タロットが一枚一枚のカードでありながら、
小さな宇宙の建築でもあることを感じます。

In the city of Trionfi, I came across a Triumph.

Even the coincidence of the words feels beautiful.
In a city shaped by history, even a small encounter like this feels somehow tarot-like.

Since the opening of the Tokyo Tarot Museum, I have often had opportunities to meet people from tarot publishing and tarot deck companies.

Recently, however, the circle of encounters has gradually widened: artists, museum curators, scholars of art history and iconology, and people who have visited the Tokyo Tarot Museum.

It is truly enjoyable and inspiring.

Today, I am being guided through museums in Ferrara by someone who researches iconology.

Through tarot, I feel that the worlds of art, history, and symbolism are quietly beginning to connect.



東京タロット美術館の開館以来、これまではタロットメーカーの方々とお会いする機会が多かったのですが、最近はアーティスト、美術館のキュレーター、美術史や図像学を研究されている方、そしてご来館くださった方々など、出会いの幅が少しずつ広がってきました。

とても楽しく、刺激的です。

I found a fascinating tarot picture book.

It seems to turn the symbols of tarot into a dreamlike story, full of imagination and wonder.

Books like this, where children and adults alike can enjoy the world of tarot through images and storytelling, are still quite rare in Japan.

One day, I hope children too can encounter tarot not only as a set of cards, but as a world of images, stories, and imagination.

The only pity is that I cannot read Italian.



面白そうなタロットの絵本を見つけました。

タロットの象徴が、夢のある物語として広がっていくような一冊。

こうした、子供から大人まで楽しめるタロットの絵本は、日本にはまだあまりないように思います。

いつか子供たちにも、タロットをカードとしてだけでなく、イメージや物語、想像力の世界として届けられたらいいなと思います。

イタリア語で読めないのが、なんとも残念です。

The Italians are truly maestros of food.

The colors on the plate, the space, the aroma.

…Just as I was quietly admiring this rather seriously,
a dog across the street was looking at me.

As if to say,
“That interpretation isn’t bad at all.”

In tarot terms,
perhaps the dog beside The Fool wears a face like this more often than we imagine.



イタリア人は、やはり食のマエストロだ。
皿の上の色彩、余白、香り。
ルネサンスから続く美意識は、料理の中にも生きている。

……と、少し真面目に感動していたら、
向こうで犬がこちらを見ていた。

まるで「その解釈、なかなか悪くない」と言っているように。

タロットでいえば、
《愚者》のそばにいる犬は、案外こういう顔をしているのかもしれない。

I found an oracle deck of kami and yōkai in a European city.

In recent years, interest in Japanese yōkai seems to be growing in Europe.
Yōkai are not simply monsters.

They are presences born from nature, objects, places, darkness, memory, and emotion — forms given to the mysterious feelings that people have sensed in everyday life.

Fear and humor.
Mystery and familiarity.
At times they are close to gods, at times to spirits, and at times to the shadow of the human heart.

In this ambiguity, we can glimpse how Japanese culture has long faced the invisible world.

Seeing Japanese kami and yōkai transformed into cards in a distant European city, I felt the strange journey of culture across borders.



街角で見かけた、神と妖怪のオラクルカード。

ヨーロッパでは近年、日本の妖怪への関心が高まっているように感じます。
妖怪とは、単なる怪物ではありません。

自然、もの、場所、闇、記憶、感情。
人間が日常の中で感じてきた、説明しきれない気配に形を与えた存在です。

怖さとユーモア、神秘と親しみやすさ。
神であり、精霊であり、ときに人間の心の影でもある。

その曖昧さの中に、日本人が見えない世界とどのように向き合ってきたのかが表れているように思います。

遠いヨーロッパの街で、日本の神や妖怪がカードになっていることに、文化の不思議な旅を感じました。
