箱嶋が惹かれるのは、「濃厚で、分厚い光景」だと言います。長い年月をかけて培われた頑丈さ、努力や経験の積み重ねが滲み出た表情や姿、熟成されたその人なりのスタイル、我が道をゆくたくましさ――そうした時間の蓄積が可視化された瞬間に強く惹かれ、スケッチや写真としてアトリエへ持ち帰る。海外では、慣れ親しんだ文化や風習との差異が人々の表情や身なりを新鮮に際立たせる一方で、国内においても同様のものを発見できるかどうかが、制作を続けるうえでの課題であり、探求の軸でもあると箱嶋は語ります。場所を問わず、自然に「描きたい」と思えるものと出会えることを理想としながら、日常の風景のなかに潜む時間の厚みを掘り起こし続けているのです。

Hakoshima speaks of being drawn to scenes that are "rich and dense." The sturdiness built over many years, the way effort and experience show in a person's face and posture, a style ripened into something entirely one's own, the quiet strength of someone simply going their own way ̶ she is drawn to the moment when accumulated time becomes visible, and carries it back to the studio in sketches and photographs. Abroad, the difference from familiar cultures and customs makes the appearance and manner of people feel vivid and new. At home in Japan, the challenge ̶ and the ongoing pursuit ̶ is to find the same quality of seeing. Her ideal is to encounter something she simply wants to draw, wherever she happens to be, and she continues to uncover the depth of time hidden within everyday life.

Gallery 38では、6月13日(土)より箱嶋泰美の初個展「Hello」を開催いたします。
本展では、箱嶋のキャリア初頭から継続的に作品発表を支えてきた南天子画廊の協力のもと、新作を中心に初期作品から近年作を含め包括的に紹介する展示となります。
箱嶋泰美は、幼少期を東南アジアで過ごした経験を背景に、その都市や街路、そこに息づく人々の気配を主題とし、タイやカンボジア、ベトナムなどを継続的に訪れ、現地でのスケッチや写真取材を重ねてきました。また近年は日本国内を拠点に、現実の風景を再構築する独自の絵画空間を形成する手法を用いて制作を続けています。

1979年生まれ。2010年に「群馬青年ビエンナーレ 2010」に入選し、2014年には「VOCA展 2014」に出品。南天子画廊で継続的に個展を開催し、主な個展に「That’s the spirit!」（2011）、「My Life」（2012）、「Vivid living」（2014）、「Floating in the city」（2018）、「紙の仕事」（2021）、「Let`s meet again」(2023)など。セゾン現代美術館での「恋する現代アート」（2016）、「網膜と記憶のミトロジー」（2018）にも参加。

Gallery 38 is pleased to announce "Hello," the first solo exhibition of Yasumi Hakoshima, opening on Saturday June 13th. Organized in collaboration with nantenshi gallery, which has been supported Hakoshima's work since the beginning of her career, the show brings together new works alongside pieces from her earlier and recent years, offering a comprehensive view of her practice.

Born in 1979. Selected for the Gunma Biennale for Young Artists 2010 and participated in VOCA 2014 at The Ueno Royal Museum. The artist has held solo exhibitions regularly at Nantenshi Gallery, Tokyo, including That’s the spirit! (2011), My Life (2012), Vivid living (2014), Floating in the city (2018), Works on Paper (2021) and Let’s meet again (2023). Group exhibitions include Contemporary Art in Love (2016) and Mythology of Retina and Memory (2018) at Sezon Museum of Modern Art, Nagano.

Shoko Yui's first solo exhibition “Reaching the Threshold” has closed yesterday. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the many visitors who came to the gallery during the exhibition period. Shoko is currently participating in the ongoing group exhibition "Metamorphosis" (organized by the Hachijuni Culture Foundation / Venue: Gallery 82 (Naga)). We warmly invite you to stop by if you are in the area. 

Our next exhibition, Yasumi Hakoshima "Hello," will open on Saturday, June 13th, supported by Nantenshi gallery.

Art Fair Tokyo has come to a close.
This time, Gallery 38 presented a group exhibition at Art Fair Tokyo for the first time., featuring works by nine artists. We believe it was a presentation that truly reflected the character of Gallery 38.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who visited our booth, as well as to the gallery and fair staff for their support.

Our next exhibition will be “Reaching the Threshold”, the first solo exhibition by Shoko Yui, opening on Saturday, April 4.
We also introduced some of her smaller works at our booth during the fair.
An opening reception will be held on the first day from 18:00 to 20:00, with the artist in attendance.
