岡﨑乾二郎(1974-)は、日本を代表する造形作家のひとりである。1981年、村松画廊での初個展「たてもののきもち」において発表された〈あかさかみつけ〉シリーズで一躍注目を集めた。本作《おかちまち》は、1987年に南天子画廊で発表された初期の貴重な一点であり、作家の原点を示す重要作といえる。

岡﨑の初期を代表する〈あかさかみつけ〉シリーズは、洋服の型紙から抽出されたラインやシェイプをもとに、ポリエチレンを切り、折り、彩色して構築されたレリーフ作品である。裏表で色分けされた平面が折り紙のように立体的に組み上げられ、「おかちまち」「かっぱばし」「そとかんだ」といった東京の地名を冠するタイトルは、地下鉄網を思わせる都市的な構造を象徴する。鑑賞者が角度を変えるたびに色彩と形態は自在に呼応し、パズルのような構築性が視覚的な快楽と知的興奮を同時に喚起する。

世界を捉える私たちの認識そのものを更新すること――岡﨑にとっての「造形」とは、その可塑性を実践的に解き放つ試みである。本作は、初期における実験精神と思想の萌芽が凝縮された一点として、今日あらためてその意義を静かに物語っている。長く手元に置き、その変化を味わいながら向き合っていただくにふさわしい作品といえるだろう。

Okazaki Kenjiro (b. 1955) is one of Japan’s leading contemporary artists, whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, sculpture, architecture, criticism, and education. Born in Tokyo, he first gained attention with his debut solo exhibition Tatemono no Kimochi at Muramatsu Gallery in 1981, where he introduced the Akasakamitsuke series. Since then, he has developed an expansive body of work grounded in his distinctive concept of “form-making,” which seeks to transform the frameworks through which we perceive the world. In 2025, a major survey exhibition, Time Unfolding Here, was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, reaffirming his significance within both Japanese and international contemporary art discourse.

The present work, Okachimachi (1987), was exhibited at Nantenji Gallery represents a rare example from this important early period. The Akasakamitsuke works consist of relief constructions made by cutting, folding, and colouring polyethylene sheets based on lines and shapes derived from clothing patterns. Planar elements painted differently on each side intersect in three-dimensional configurations reminiscent of origami. Their titles—such as Okachimachi, Kappabashi, and Sotokanda—refer to districts in Tokyo, evoking the intricate network of the city’s subway system.

ヴォルフガング・ティルマンス (1968 - ) は、2000年に写真家として初めてターナー賞を受賞したドイツ出身の写真家である。1992年に英国ボーンマス・アンド・プール・カレッジを卒業した後、『i-D』、『Purple』などのファッション・カルチャー誌で活躍。私小説的な思索を感じさせるシンプルなスナップショットから同世代の若者やユースカルチャー、セクシャルマイノリティに目を向けた作品などで注目され、その後ファインアートとして高い評価を得る。

ティルマンスにとって、色彩は本質的な認識体験であると同時に、写真がどのように機能し、どのように意味が付与されるかを探るものでもあり、主観的・歴史的な視点や洞察が共存していると語る。抽象的なのか具象的なのかわからないような、遊び心のある不確かさで知覚の既成概念を揺さぶるティルマンスは、写真というメディアの本質、目的、意義の境界を問い続けているのである。

Wolfgang Tillmans (1968 - ), born in Germany, was the first photographer to win the Turner Prize in 2000. After graduating from Bournemouth and Poole College in England in 1992, he worked for notable fashion and culture magazines such as i-D and Purple. He became known for his simple, yet evocative snapshots of youth culture; the young people of his generation, and sexual minorities, as well as his ability to capture a personal sense of narrative and contemplation, earning him equal acclaim as a fine artist.

For Tillmans, color is both an essential cognitive experience and an exploration of how photography functions and is endowed with meaning, he says, where subjective and historical perspectives and insights coexist. This work demonstrates Tillmans’ disruption of perceptual preconceptions with a playful uncertainty that makes it impossible to tell whether the image is abstract or figurative, and thereby continuing to question the nature, purpose, and significance of the medium of photography.

今井俊満（1928 - 2002）は、戦後日本の前衛美術を牽引した画家である。京都に生まれ、1948年に武蔵高等学校を卒業後、1952年に渡仏。1955年に、画家サム・フランシスを介して美術批評家ミシェル・タピエと出会い、当時フランスを中心に広がった前衛芸術運動アンフォルメルへと参加する。代表作には《晩秋》や〈花鳥風月〉シリーズなどがある。また、今井の活動は作家だけに留まらず、1956年には東京日本橋高島屋での「世界・今日の美術展」にジャン・フォートリエ、ジョルジュ・マチュウらの作品の出展を斡旋するなど、日本美術界にアンフォルメル絵画を紹介する重要な橋渡し役を担った。1957年には、パリのスタドラー画廊で初個展を成功させ、アンフォルメル作家としての国際的に活躍し、国内外の著名な美術館で展示するなどした。

1958年8月にパリで描かれた本作《HYMNE À LA NUIT》は、そんな今井のアンフォルメル実践が最も白熱していた頃の作品である。フランス語で「夜の讃歌」を意味するそのタイトルが示唆するように、何層にも重ね、削り取られた絵の具の表面に吐出した暗い画肌の質感（マチエール）と、その上から鮮やかな色の飛沫が夜空に輝く星のように散りばめられている。本作は、画家今井俊満のアンフォルメル実践の初期を代表するものであり、秀作の一つである。

Toshimitsu Imai (1928–2002) was a leading figure of postwar Japanese avant-garde painting. Born in Kyoto, he graduated from Musashi High School in 1948 and moved to France in 1952. In 1955, through the painter Sam Francis, he was introduced to the art critic Michel Tapié and joined Art Informel, the avant-garde movement then radiating outward from France. His representative works include Late Autumn and the Kachō Fūgetsu (Flowers, Birds, Wind, and Moon) series. Imai’s contributions, however, extended well beyond his own practice: in 1956, he helped arrange the inclusion of works by Jean Fautrier, Georges Mathieu, and others in the exhibition “Art of Today—A World View” at Takashimaya in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, serving as a crucial bridge that brought Art Informel into the Japanese art world.

Painted in Paris in August 1958, HYMNE À LA NUIT dates from the period when Imai’s engagement with Art Informel was at its most incandescent. As its title—French for “Hymn to the Night”—suggests, a dark, brooding matière emerges from layers of paint built up and scraped away, across which vivid droplets of color are scattered like stars glittering in the night sky. The work is representative of the early phase of Imai’s Art Informel practice and stands as one of its finest achievements.

Contemporary artist Atsushi Kaga (1978-) develops a pictorial world of humour and solitude around his anthropomorphic rabbit character, Usacchi. After graduating from the National College of Art and Design in Ireland, Kaga has been based in Europe, and after a stay in Kyoto in 2018, he absorbed the sensibility of Japanese art and established a unique style that combines Western and Eastern art traditions. Drawing in delicate brushstrokes reminiscent of 17th century Dutch paintings and the Rimpa school, his finely rendered animal figures express emotions that sway between humour and solitude, tenderness and pain—serving as quiet mirrors to the viewer’s inner world. Kaga has held solo exhibitions at renowned galleries such as MAHO KUBOTA GALLERY in Tokyo and mother’s tankstation in Dublin, and his work is in the collection of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, establishing his international reputation for poetic and subtly humorous visual storytelling.

アレックス・カッツ(1927-)はアメリカを代表する現代美術家の一人であり、戦後のポートレイトペインターとして最も影響力のある1人でもある。1950年代から抽象表現主義が台頭するなか、カッツは物語性や具象的な表現を試みる数少ない作家であった。彼の作品は身の回りの人物を中心とする肖像画や風景など日常的なモチーフに溢れ、それらを豊かで美しい色彩と最小限のディテールで平面的に描いている。彼のスタイルはパーセプチュアルリアリズム(知覚的写実主義)と呼ばれることもあり、写真のようなリアルさを追求するのではなく、視覚的印象の「即時性」と「明快さ」が重視されている。また彼の作品には同時代の作品に見られる風刺性や大衆文化への批評性は希薄で、詩的で抒情的な側面が強いことが特徴にあげられる。

Alex Katz (1927-) is one of the most prominent contemporary artists in the US and one of the most influential portrait painters in the postwar era. At a time when Abstract Expressionism was gaining dominance in the 1950s, Katz was one of the few artists who continued to explore narrative and figurative representation. His work focuses on everyday subjects such as portraits of people around him and landscapes, rendered with rich, beautiful colors and minimal detail in a flat, two-dimensional style. His approach is often referred to as “Perceptual Realism,” which does not aim to replicate photographic reality but instead emphasizes the immediacy and clarity of visual impressions.

For Katz, printmaking is a central part of his artistic practice—not merely a means of reproduction, but a vital and independent form of creative expression. By employing flat, uniform color planes and minimal shading, he directs the viewer’s attention to the essential elements of the portrait. This pared-down composition, combined with the black background, allows for a deeper engagement with Laura’s serene presence and refined beauty.

ロベルト・ベルナルディは（1974-)は、イタリア出身の画家である。食器やグラス、キッチン家電といった日常的な写実的な題材から、カラフルで魅惑を帯びたキャンディーといったお菓子の題材まで、幅広く日常的な環境に潜む美しさを探求し、現代におけるハイパーリアリズムの文脈をハイブリットに組み込んだ画家として精通している。幼少期より絵を描き始め、1993年に高校卒業後、ローマに移り、サン・フランチェスコ・ア・リーパ教会で修復師として従事。その後、自分の絵画制作を開始。風景画や肖像画を経た後に、現在のスタイルに近いリアリズムのスタイルへと移行していった。2004年、ベルナルディは、ニューヨークへと短期滞在した。リチャード・エステス、チャック・クローズ、トム・ブラックウケる、チャールズ・ベルなど、アメリカのハイパリアリズムの文脈を汲んだアーティストらと親交を深めていく。この時期の経験は、ベルナルディの実践に強い影響を及ぼし、ポップアートにも共鳴するような現在のスタイルへと繋がっている。

Roberto Bernardi (b. 1974) is an Italian painter widely recognized for exploring the beauty hidden within everyday surroundings. He is known for depicting realistic subjects such as tableware, glasses, and kitchen appliances, as well as colourful and alluring confectionery subjects such as candy, thereby situating his practice within the contemporary context of hyperrealism. He began drawing at an early age and moved to Rome after graduating from high school in 1993, where he worked as a restorer at the Church of San Francesco a Ripa. He subsequently began his own painting practice, progressing through landscape and portraiture before transitioning to the realist style that characterises his current work. In 2004, Bernardi made a short visit to New York, where he forged connections with artists working within the tradition of American hyperrealism, including Richard Estes, Chuck Close, Tom Blackwell, and Charles Bell. The experiences of this period exerted a strong influence on Bernardi’s practice and led him toward his current style, which also resonates with Pop Art.

1960年代から70年代のアメリカにおけるミニマル・アートを牽引した一人である桑山忠明 (1932–2023)。東京藝術大学日本画科を卒業後、1958年に渡米しニューヨークを拠点に活動を展開した。初期には、岩絵具を混ぜた塗料をキャンヴァスに裏打ちした和紙に幾重にも塗り重ねるなど、日本画の素養を基盤とした作品を制作し、1961年にはニューヨークのGreen Galleryで個展を開催。1963年頃からはアクリル絵具やワニスといった新しい素材を取り入れる。やがて金属で縁取られた枠の中に筆触を排し、赤・青・緑といった均一な色彩を用いた絵画様式を確立した。その無駄のない造形は、ミニマル・アートの文脈においてもしばしば比較・言及されてきた。

桑山は1964年に発表したステートメントで次のように記している。
「観念、思想、哲学、理性、意味、作家の人間性さえも、私の作品には一切入り込まない、そこにはただ芸術そのものがあり、それにつきるのである。」

Kuwayama Tadaaki (1932–2023) was one of the artists who introduced Minimal Art in the United States into the context of Japanese contemporary art history during the 1960s and 1970s. After graduating from the Department of Japanese Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, he moved to the U.S. in 1958 and based his practice in New York. His first solo exhibition was held at Green Gallery in New York in 1961. In his early years, he employed methods rooted in Japanese painting—layering paint mixed with mineral pigments onto washi paper mounted on canvas. Around 1963, he began to incorporate new materials such as acrylic paint and varnish, ultimately developing a distinct pictorial style: fields of uniform colour—red, blue, green—contained within metallic frames, entirely devoid of brushstrokes. His refined, reductionist forms have often been discussed in relation to the discourse of Minimal Art.

In a 1964 statement, Kuwayama wrote:
“Ideas, thoughts, philosophy, reasons, meanings, even the humanity of the artist, do not enter into my work at all. There is only the art itself. That is all.”

幼少期から長谷川等伯らの表現に魅了された村上友晴 (1938 - ) は、とりわけ木炭の持つ表現の可能性に興味を抱いた。東京藝術大学在学中、当時の日本画の技法に反して、顔料と油絵具を調合した独自の「黒」の色材を考案。1964年にはグッゲンハイム国際賞展への招待出品に田中敦子らと共に抜擢され、国内外から注目を浴びると共に、ニューヨークでのアメリカの抽象表現主義との出会いが転機となり、絵具を厚く塗り重ねる洋画の技法を通して自身のイメージする理想の「黒」を追求していく。また1979年にはカトリックに改宗し、制作のリズムを修道院の生活に倣うなど、日々の積み重ねで形成されたその結晶が現すものは、祈りという行為に類似する神聖な精神性への追求とも享受できる。

From an early age, Murakami Tomoharu (1938 - ) was fascinated by the works of influential Japanese painter Hasegawa Tohaku, sparking a lifelong interest in the expressive properties of charcoal. While he was a student at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, he invented his own unique ‘black’ medium by mixing pigments and oil paints, which went against the traditional Japanese Nihonga painting techniques of the time. In 1964, he was selected for the Guggenheim International Award Exhibition alongside Tanaka Atsuko amongst others, and began attracting attention both in Japan and internationally. Whilst in New York, his encounter with American abstract expressionism was a turning point in his artistic practice, inspiring him to pursue his own ideal ‘black’ through a ‘Western’ painting technique of applying thick layers of paint to the canvas. In 1979, Murakami converted to Catholicism, and the rhythm of his work was modeled after the life of a monk in a monastery; with creation and the accumulation of works formed through the daily repetition of these acts becoming a pursuit of sacred spirituality similar to the act of prayer.
