今日はこどもの日！🎏
こどもの日といえば、かぶとや鯉のぼりがすぐ思い浮かぶと思いますが、「菖蒲（ショウブ）」も古くから端午の節句の象徴であったことをご存じでしたか？
菖蒲の葉は刀を思わせる形をしていることから尚武の精神を象徴するとされてきました。
菖蒲の形を模した太刀は、江戸時代の男の子たちが端午の節句に遊んでいたおもちゃです。時代とともに節句を祝うための飾りへと変化していきました。
今週は、当館の草の間では、人形収集家の西澤笛畝が描いた菖蒲太刀図の短冊を展示しています。

Today is Children’s Day in Japan! 🎏
For Japanese people, Children’s Day typically means displaying kabuto helmets and carp streamers, but many might not know that irises have also been used as a symbol of Tango-no-sekku (boy’s day) since ancient times. Iris leaves resemble the shape of a katana and have long been considered a symbol of martial spirit. The “shobu-dachi” (iris sword) was a toy played with by boys during the Boys' Festival during the Edo period. Over time, it evolved into a decorative item used to celebrate the festival.
In celebration of Children’s Day, we have a tanzaku of an iris sword painted by Nishizawa Tekiho, a doll collector, on display this week!

We hope that children all over the world can grow up healthy and strong✨

5月・新緑の誘い
風薫る5月、初夏のあたたかな陽ざしを受け、芽吹いたばかりの初々しい葉がおおらかに広がっていきます。
覆い繁る葉はまだ淡い黄緑色で、木陰から見上げれば、透き通るように鮮やかなグリーンの光が目に映ります。
萌える緑の鮮やかさに誘われ、一年の中でもこの時季にしか見られない新緑の魅力をお楽しみください。

In May, the freshly budded leaves unfurl in the warm sunshine of early summer. The leaves are still a pale yellow-green color, but if you look up from the shade of the trees, you will see a clear, bright green light. The vividness of the sprouting greenery invites you to enjoy the charm of fresh verdure that can only be seen at this time of the year.

Take a look at this bonsai! It is a forest planting of Japanese beeches. Each trunk is producing leaves at different rates, so there is a good mix of sizes and colors! Even the textures of the leaves are a little different. Swipe through the pictures to compare them! 🍃👀

盆栽の魅力のひとつがその樹の造形です。風雨、風雪に耐えて自然に形作られた幹、または人の手によって作り出された幹の中に、まるで前衛芸術かのような造形を目にすることがあり驚かされます。端正で凛とした佇まいの盆栽ももちろん魅力的ではありますが、複雑に絡み合う幹の造形はまるでうねりながら天に向かって立ち上がる龍のようでもあり、そのダイナミックな動きに盆栽ならではの美しさを感じます。そうです、盆栽は生き物ですから常に成長し一瞬たりとも止まることはありません。つまり盆栽は“動的な美しさ”も兼ね備えているのです。
様々な盆栽の幹を観てアヴァンギャルドなアートの世界をご堪能下さい。

Avant-garde
One of the charms of bonsai lies in the shape of the tree. It is surprising to see forms that resemble avant-garde art within trunks—whether naturally shaped by wind, rain, and snow, or crafted by human hands. While bonsai with a neat and dignified appearance are certainly charming, the intricate intertwining of the trunks resembles a dragon rising toward the heavens in a sinuous motion, and it is in this dynamic movement that we find a beauty unique to bonsai. That’s right—since bonsai are living things, they are constantly growing and never stop for even a moment. In other words, bonsai also embody “dynamic beauty.”
Please enjoy the world of avant-garde art as you observe the diverse forms of bonsai trunks.

Join an English gallery tour led by our American Coordinator for International Relations! Commentary will be provided in English on how to view bonsai, their highlights, and their appeal-focusing primarily on the bonsai in the Collection Gallery, where the exhibits change weekly✨

Date: Tuesdays 1:30 PM (approx. 30 min.)
Venue: Lobby, Collection Gallery
Fee: Free (entrance ticket required)
