第２章 サム・フォールズ Sam Falls
カンヴァスの作品
サム・フォールズのカンヴァスの作品は、誰もが親しみやすい豊かな色彩と植物のシルエットが特徴です。これらは屋外に広げたカンヴァスの上に植物の枝葉や草花を配置して、染料を撒き、一定期間、太陽の光や雨風に晒すことで作られます。このユニークな手法はいわば自然との共同制作であり、作品には制作場所の環境やその時の天候、作家の制作の記憶や時間などが凝縮されています。
私たち鑑賞者は、画面に見て取れる要素から彼の制作過程を想像し、楽しむことができます。それは、鑑賞者と作品、鑑賞者とアーティストとの隔たりを埋めることにもつながっています。
《Spring to Fall》
本作は、ニューヨーク郊外にあるハドソンバレーの自然豊かな土地で1年以上の歳月をかけて、四季の移ろいをカンヴァスに写し込んだものです。高さ3.6m、横幅45mを超えるこの巨大な作品は、昨年、世界最大級の現代アートフェアとして知られるアート・バーゼルに展示され、話題を呼びました。日本初公開となる本展では大きな弧を描く円形の壁面に展示しています。
Falls’ canvas works
Falls’ canvas works are characterized by rich colors and plantsilhouettes that appeal to everyone. They are created by arrangingplant branches, leaves, and flowers on a canvas spread outdoors,sprinkling dye over them, and exposing them to sunlight, rain, and wind for a set period. This unique technique is, in a sense, a collaborative effort with nature, and the works encapsulate the environment of the production site, the climate at the time, the artist's memories of the process, and the passage of time.
We, the viewers, can imagine and enjoy his creative process through the elements visible on the canvas. This also helps bridge the gap between the viewer and the work, and between the viewer and the artist.
《Spring to Fall》
This work captures the passage of the seasons on canvas, created over more than a year in the lush natural landscape of the Hudson Valley, just outside New York. This monumental piece, measuring over 3.6 meters in height and 45 meters in width, was exhibited last year at Art Basel, renowned as one of the world’s largest contemporary art fairs, where it attracted considerable attention. For its Japanese premiere, this exhibition will display the work on a circular wall forming a large arc.
