When the simulation throws out a moment.
I have never liked turquoise and red but somehow everything found it's way together. You wouldn't believe me of course, but this is totally unposed and serendipitous.

LaQ (La kyu) is the Japanese Lego. More abstract, tactile, delicate, and organic than the Danish blocks. It reminds me of how proteins configure themselves at a molecular level.
My daughter has been making these shapes for the past few weeks. She hasn't given them names or representational titles, so from my point of view they aren't meant to be anything particular (although the last one is definitely a camera, she told me). They are her joyful creations made to satisfy the primitive and inexplicable corners of her sense of existence 😚
They are very viral in form and construction. Organic but inorganic. Sometimes simple, sometimes complicated. The colours of the pieces seem to be random, but I watched her and she was selective.
Whenever I join in and make something with LaQ I end up making representational and symmetrical things with definite colourways, and I make decisions about ideas and considerations about form and function. It's always nice to be reminded about how unnecessary all this high-brow stuff is, even though it feels important and offers a sense of worth.
There are a lot of pitfalls in the act of creation. And when someone says condescendingly that art is easy, they are actually correct. It is. It should be. The hard part is forgetting everything else!

Art Club Kamiyama! Opening event October 13th!

We're starting an after-school art club in Kamiyama town!

and will be moving into a new studio building in the Uetsuno area (between Kamiyama Onsen and Michinoeki) to begin preparations for Art Club Kamiyama!

We are going to offer bi-weekly guided workshops as well as autonomous sessions for independent work.

The space (so far, it doesn't have a name, but maybe it will be known as The Biscuit Factory 😂) will be a working studio for both of us. We want it to be a comfortable place of experimentation and enjoyment for anyone who has even a passing interest in making and discovering.

It's called 'art club' and it's a convenient and over-used name, but really, we just want to make a place for youngsters (and oldsters!) to appreciate the joy of creating and learning. Don't worry about making 'art', just focus on looking, making and thinking! Let other people decide if it's art 😜

「そう思う？」

「立体感がけっこう興味深い」

「ありがとう。ところで、僕、あなたのこと知ってる？」

「ソーメンっていう日本の雑誌で働いてるんだ。知ってる？」

「うん、聞いたことあるよ。アートの雑誌でしょ？」

「まあね。アート、ファッション、カルチャー、トレンド、テクノロジー……文化的に意識高い人なら誰でも信じてるような、よくある儚いナンセンスを扱ってる」

「なんでここ、神山にいるの？」

「ラフショップとかいうギャラリーについて記事を書いてるんだ。知ってる？」

「聞いたことないな」

「そう？　小さい町だから、みんなお互い知ってると思ったのに！」

「どうだろうね。僕は自分のパッション・プロジェクトに忙しくて、他の人のやってることなんて気にしてないから」

「あ、バスが来た。会えてよかったよ」

「うん、また町で会うかもね」

「じゃあね」

"I work for Somen, the Japanese magazine, you know?"
"Yeah, I've heard of it. It's an art magazine, isn't it?"
"Kind of. Art, fashion, culture, trends, technology. We cover the usual ephemeral nonsense that everyone and anyone that is culturally aware believes in."
"Why are you here, in Kamiyama?"
"I'm writing an article about a gallery called Rough Shop or something like that. Do you know it?"
"Never heard of it."
"No? I thought this was a small town and everyone would know everyone!"
"I don't know about that, but I'm too busy pursuing my own passion projects to care about anyone else's thing."
"Ah, here comes the bus. Nice to meet you."
"Yeah, maybe see you around town"
