【次回展のご案内】
智美術館では、本年秋、バスケタリー作家、関島寿子さんの展覧会を開催します。
―原理追究・分析型バスケット―
　関島寿子（1944～）は植物素材でバスケタリー作品を制作しています。バスケタリーとは籠を編む方法、またはその方法で作られたものを指します。しかし「かご」はカゴでも関島の作品は物を入れるための籠ではありません。籠を編む方法を編組（へんそ）ともいいますが、関島はその編組の原理に着目し、構築法と素材の特性、造形についての疑問や仮説から生じる発見を起点とした思考の展開を造形化します。思考そのものが作品であり、その端的な可視化に関島の技術があります。
　分析的な態度で制作される関島の作品は、考えることの愉しさ、発見に伴う感動に満ちています。本展では、1980年代から最新作までを通し、関島寿子の編組造形における思考と実践を追います。

Upcoming Exhibition:

This autumn, Tomo Museum will present the solo exhibition on Sekijima Hisako, a basketry artist.
-Principle Oriented, Analytical Baskets-
Sekijima Hisako (b. 1944) creates baskets as textile art. Basketry refers both to the technique of constructing baskets and to objects made using that method. However, while her works may resemble baskets, they are not intended to hold things. Sekijima focuses on the underlying principles of interlacing, bringing her thinking into being through a close engagement with the structures and properties of the materials, in questions and hypotheses concerning construction methods, as well as in discoveries that arise through processes of trial and error. In her practice, thought itself becomes the artwork, and her technical mastery enables its direct visualization.
Created with an analytical approach, Sekijima’s works are filled with the sense of wonder that accompanies discovery and allows us to witness the joy of thinking. This exhibition traces the development of thought and practice in her interlacing forms, from the 1980s to her most recent works.

智美術館を囲む白壁に設置している2枚の館銘板は、金属作家の畠山耕治（1956～）によるもの。作家が手掛けた青銅の複雑な表情と鋳造による存在感が空間に利いています。さらに、展示室にも畠山氏による金属の壁面が2か所あります。
当館では2022年に「畠山耕治　青銅を鋳る」展を開催しました。畠山氏は、今年3月に著書『畠山耕治　青銅の意識』を出版。制作哲学が凝縮された一冊です。

The two frames of the museum’s exterior plaques were created by metal artist, Hatakeyama Koji (b. 1956). His bronze works, with their intricate expressions and the presence created through casting, resonate throughout the spaces. Additionally, the exhibition space features two bronze walls created by the artist.
At Tomo Museum, we presented his exhibition, “Founding Worlds of Bronze” in 2022. More recently, he published a book exploring his creative thought process titled, “Bronze Mind.”

正面玄関の自動ドアの両脇からわずかに見える金属の扉。すべて閉めると、その存在感が際立ちます。扉に施された無数の穴から外の光が差し込むと、エントランスの床に影が落ち、光と影が織りなす空間が目を引きます。この扉は鋳金作家の北村真一（1945～）に依頼しました。
また、玄関横の館銘板や、正門から玄関まで続く石畳の間の金属プレートも北村氏によるものです。

At the entrance of the museum building, visitors walk through a pair of metal sliding doors. The various holes on the doors allow light to pass through when closed, casting shadows and reflections of the outside view. The doors, created by metal casting artist Kitamura Shinichi (b. 1945), also designed the Musée Tomo signage beside the entrance and the metal plates in the stone pathway between the main gate and the museum building.

智美術館の建築には、様々な場所に工芸作家の意匠が取り入れられています。
1階受付から地下の展示室までを繋ぐ螺旋階段には、ガラス作家の横山尚人（1937～）によるガラスの手すりを設置。天井からの光を受けて輝くガラスの手すりと、壁面の篠田桃紅によるコラージュ作品が、螺旋階段の空間の中で調和しています。展覧会によっては、この空間に作品を展示することもあります。

At Tomo Museum, various artist designed details, commissioned by the museum’s founder, Kikuchi Tomo (1923-2016), are integrated throughout the building. Visitors can descend to the exhibition space via the spiral staircase, featuring a glass handrail created by glass artist Yokoyama Naoto (b. 1937). Angled ceiling lighting allows this glass handrail to glisten and reflect onto the mural by Shinoda Toko (1913–2021). Depending on the exhibition, the staircase area may also serve as part of the exhibition space.

美術館のエントランスに設置している篠田桃紅《ある女主人の肖像》は、休館中もご覧いただけます。
墨による抽象表現を追求した篠田桃紅（1913-2021）による墨象作品。2003年に美術館が開館して以来、ご来館の皆様をお迎えしています。
2021年に107歳で亡くなった篠田桃紅と当館設立者の菊池智（1923-2016）の長きにわたる親交によって、当館のエントランスと展示室へ向かう螺旋階段の壁面に篠田桃紅の作品を設置しています。
カフェにお越しの際は、こちらの作品もお楽しみください。

Introducing a work by Shinoda Toko, permanently on display at the Tomo Museum. Upon entering the building, visitors are welcomed by “Portrait of a Lady”. This work, along with the mural by the spiral staircase, has been a part of Tomo Museum since its establishment in 2003, reflecting a long-standing relationship between Shinoda Toko and Kikuchi Tomo (the founder).

Although Tomo Museum is closed until autumn 2026 for maintenance of the exhibition space, Café Safu by Onko Chishin, located on the first floor of the building, will remain open during regular hours. With the changing seasons, the view of the Japanese garden from the café is a delight.
