Enjoy art after dark

Most of the National Art Center, Tokyo’s special exhibitions can be visited until 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Though these evening viewings may sound like they’d attract crowds in a city with nightlife as vibrant as Tokyo’s, they are in fact some of the most relaxing opportunities for appreciating art, seeing fewer visitors than during the day.

And not only do you get the luxury of having the artworks almost to yourself: the low lighting in the vast entrance lobby and spacious corridors helps make the Center building feel somewhat like a spaceship floating through the darkness outside.

Among these playful line drawings are some created by Paul Smith himself at the museum.

As you move through each section, look out for touches of playfulness scattered throughout the exhibition.

まるで額縁のように、 鮮やかな色の壁面を通して、その先の作品や展示室を臨める場所があります。

壁面の色や柄、作品がひとつの画面に収まり、 立つ位置によってさまざまな構図が現れます。
いくつもの境界を越えて視線が奥まで通るこの構成は、 建築用語で「エンフィラード」と呼ばれます。

会場を巡りながら、 額縁のなかにどのような風景が見つかるか、ぜひ探してみてください。

Like a picture frame, vividly colored walls offer views of artworks and the galleries beyond.

The colors and patterns of the walls, together with the artworks, come together within a single frame, creating a variety of compositions depending on where you stand.

This arrangement, which allows the eye to travel through a succession of spaces, is known in architecture as an “enfilade.”

As you move through the exhibition, look for the different views that appear within each frame.

週に一度の休館日、美術館では皆さまを迎える準備をしています。展覧会の準備もそのひとつ。

国立新美術館は広いスペースを最大限に活用し、年間を通してさまざまな展覧会を開催しています。
その数は、企画展と公募展を合わせて、１年間に80本を超えることも！

展示替え作業はもちろん、展示室の清掃や設備のメンテナンスまで、美術館を支える数多くの仕事が、休館日という限られた時間のなかで行われています。

美術館の裏側を知ると、作品を見る時間が少し特別なものになるかもしれません。

: Even on closed days, NACT keeps busy behind the scenes

＼The National Art Center, Tokyo is closed on Tuesdays.／

Once a week, the National Art Center, Tokyo closes its doors to the public for regular upkeep. Included in this work is preparing exhibitions so that they are ready to welcome visitors.

NACT hosts a wide range of special exhibitions in its spacious galleries throughout the year.
The sheer number of special exhibitions & artist associations' exhibitions is impressive, reaching more than 80 annually.

On closing days, cleaners and mechanics clean and maintain the facilities, and seasoned logistics professionals step in to orchestrate the precise movement of artworks and materials, all on a tight schedule.

Understanding the hard work that goes into bringing each exhibition to life might help you appreciate the artworks just a little more.
