People keep asking us about recoil, and how we get used to it.

First you get used to the weight of the gun - then you build up the powder charge shot by shot; as you learn to handle the recoil and characteristics of the ozutsu.

Tanzutsu are matchlock pistols. They weren’t really battlefield weapons - more show pieces; and most were made during the relative peace of the Edo era. Cavalry would carry slightly longer guns known as bajouzutsu - that could be braced into the stirrup for reloading whilst in the saddle.

In hōjutsu everyone is a white belt. The belt is used to hold your sword, ammo and tools in place and does not indicate your level or skill.

Rapid fire! As these guns are all muzzleloaders, there is no ‘real’ way to shoot quickly. The best a gunner can do is try to save a second here, and a second there. Then, aim and shoot quickly. How do you think this gunner did? How long was it between shots?

In the gun workshop. Even one shot creates a thick layer of gunpowder and residue in the barrel and on the working parts of the firing mechanism. In fact all gunners learn how to maintain and clean a matchlock on their first day…
