速水御舟「上州妙義金洞山第一石門」

群馬県の名勝・妙義山にある「第一石門」を描いた速水御舟の写生作です。

本作の最大の魅力は、無数の線が織りなす躍動感にあります。

左下に描かれた小さな人物は、巨大な石門との対比によって自然の雄大さを際立たせています。写生でありながら詩情豊かな表現へと昇華されています。

春の妙義山に立ち、眼前に広がる奇岩の景観を前にした御舟の新鮮な感動が、そのまま画面に刻み込まれているかのようです。

大正14年4月10日という具体的な日付が記された本作は、御舟の旅の足跡を伝える貴重な写生です。『速水御舟大成 補遺版』にも掲載された、御舟芸術の原点をうかがうことのできる貴重な一点です。

Hayami Gyoshu
“First Stone Gate at Kondōsan, Myogi, Kozuke Province”

This work is a sketch by Hayami Gyoshu depicting the famous First Stone Gate of Mount Myogi in Gunma Prefecture.

Its greatest appeal lies in the dynamic energy created by countless intertwining lines. A small figure in the lower left emphasizes the overwhelming scale of the massive stone arch and the grandeur of nature itself. Although executed as a sketch from life, the work transcends mere observation and achieves a deeply poetic expression.

Standing before the extraordinary rock formations of Mount Myogi in the spring of 1925, Gyoshu seems to have captured his fresh sense of wonder directly onto the paper.

Dated April 10, 1925, this rare sketch preserves a record of the artist’s journey and his direct encounter with nature. It is also included in *Hayami Gyoshu Taisei: Supplementary Edition*, making it an important work that offers insight into the origins of Gyoshu’s artistic vision.

This work depicts large branches of white plum blossoms stretching across the picture plane, with a softly glowing moon floating in the background. The wide use of empty space creates a natural sense of quiet nighttime atmosphere. The hazy moon, rendered without a sharply defined outline, gently dissolves into the silk ground, conveying the softness and slight moisture of the night air. Its subdued moonlight faintly illuminates the white plum blossoms, giving the entire composition a calm poetic mood.

Among the branches, a small bush warbler (uguisu) is quietly hidden. As the viewer follows the flow of the branches, the bird gradually reveals itself, evoking the sensation of hearing a faint birdsong within the stillness of the night.

白隠慧鶴「南無阿弥陀仏」

白隠慧鶴による「南無阿弥陀仏」の名号です。

墨をたっぷり含んだ大胆な筆致で、一気に書き上げられた強い迫力が感じられます。太くうねる線には、白隠ならではの生命感と精神性が宿り、文字そのものが画面の中で大きく呼吸しているかのようです。

豪放な筆遣いの中にも、不思議な静けさと安堵感が漂う一幅です。

白隠は、人々にわかりやすく仏の教えを伝えることを重視し、自らの禅画によって、人々の救済に働いた禅僧です。

尚、12月17日（木）より京都市京セラ美術館（旧名称：京都市美術館）において、スタジオジブリ企画制作による「白隠さんの禅」展が開催される予定です。

Hakuin Ekaku“Namu Amida Butsu”

This work is a rendering of the sacred invocation “Namu Amida Butsu” by Hakuin Ekaku.

Executed with bold, heavily inked brushwork, the calligraphy conveys a powerful sense of immediacy, as if written in a single breath. The thick, undulating strokes embody the vitality and spiritual intensity characteristic of Hakuin, and the characters themselves seem to breathe dynamically across the surface of the paper.

Hakuin placed great importance on conveying Buddhist teachings in a manner accessible to ordinary people, and through his Zen paintings and calligraphy, he devoted himself to the spiritual guidance and salvation of others.

Despite its vigorous brushwork, the work also possesses a quiet sense of calm and reassurance.

In addition, beginning on December 17 (Thursday), the exhibition *“Hakuin-san’s Zen”*, planned and produced by Studio Ghibli, is scheduled to be held at Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art (formerly the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art).

葛飾北斎「花に時鳥」

淡く抑えられた草花の色彩と、墨線による簡潔な描写が響き合い、北斎ならではの洗練された感覚が感じられます。

時鳥は古来、初夏を告げる鳥として和歌や絵画にたびたび登場し、その澄んだ鳴き声は人々の心を惹きつけてきました。本作においても、静かな余白の中に、一瞬の飛翔の気配と季節の移ろいが繊細に表現されています。

本作は、細見美術館初代館長・細見亮市旧蔵であり、その後、海外屈指の日本美術コレクターとして知られる Michael Harari 旧蔵作品として伝来した、来歴の確かな優品です。

にも掲載されております。

Katsushika Hokusai
“Cuckoo and Flowers”

This elegant fan painting depicts a cuckoo descending through a quiet field of flowers.
The soft colors of the plants and the simple yet expressive ink lines create a refined and graceful composition characteristic of Hokusai’s work.

In Japanese art and poetry, the cuckoo has long been celebrated as a symbol of early summer. Its clear cry and fleeting appearance often evoke the beauty of the changing seasons. In this painting, Hokusai captures that fleeting moment with remarkable simplicity and sensitivity.

The work was formerly owned by Hosomi Ryōichi, the founding director of the Hosomi Museum, and later belonged to Michael Harari, one of the most important collectors of Japanese art outside Japan. Its distinguished provenance further enhances the significance of the work.

熊谷守一「五風十雨」
ー1977年（97歳）作ー

「五風十雨」とは、五日に一度風が吹き、十日に一度雨が降る――
天地の調和と豊穣を願う、古くからの吉祥の言葉です。

97歳を迎えた熊谷守一は、その言葉を、限りなく削ぎ落とされた筆致で静かに揮毫しました。
余白を大きく残した画面には、晩年の守一にしか到達しえない澄みきった呼吸が漂っています。

なかでも、「雨」の字の下にぽつりと置かれた一滴の墨は、深い静寂の中に落ちる雨音そのもの。

絶筆となった「雨滴」を連想させる作品です。

Kumagai Morikazu “Gofū Jūu”
-1977 (created at the age of 97)-

“Gofū Jūu” is an ancient auspicious phrase meaning “wind once every five days, rain once every ten days,” symbolizing harmony in nature and abundant harvests.

At the age of 97, Morikazu Kumagai rendered these words with quietly restrained brushwork, reduced to the utmost essence.
The vast empty space within the composition carries a clarity and stillness that could only have been reached in the artist’s final years.

Most striking is the single drop of ink placed quietly beneath the character for “rain,” evoking the sound of a raindrop falling into deep silence itself.

It is as though the work carries the lingering presence of the final rain that would later culminate in Kumagai’s last work, “Raindrop.”

李禹煥「From Point」（2006）は、グラファイトという極めて素朴な素材を用いながら、「存在」と「余白」の関係を深く問いかける作品です。

黒い痕跡は白い余白を埋めるのではなく、むしろ余白の広がりと静けさを際立たせています。

何かを多く語るのではなく、最小限の痕跡によって無限の空間を立ち上げる。その沈黙の深さこそが、李禹煥芸術の本質と言えるでしょう。

白隠慧鶴「蘆葉達磨」

本作は、白隠慧鶴による「蘆葉達磨」です。淡墨で一気に描かれた達磨の姿からは、鋭い眼差しと内にこもる気迫、緊張感が感じられます。

賛に記された
「魏江王たる／ミち乃／路用に／あし／一葉」

素朴でどこかユーモラスな響きの中に、出来事の真偽を超えて本質を見ようとする白隠のまなざしが感じられます。

『白隠』（筑摩書房、1964年刊）掲載（p.202／No.330）、さらに「信州の白隠展」（長野信濃美術館、1974年）出品、吉沢新兵衛旧蔵という来歴を有する作品です。

Hakuin Ekaku, “Daruma Crossing on a Reed Leaf”

This work is “Roba Daruma-zu” (Daruma Crossing on a Reed Leaf) by Hakuin Ekaku. Executed in swift, fluid ink, the figure of Daruma conveys a piercing gaze, as well as an intense inner energy and tension.

The accompanying inscription reads:
“Gi kō wa taru / michi no / royō ni / ashi / ichiyō”

Within its simple and somewhat humorous tone, one senses Hakuin’s perspective—seeking the essential truth beyond the literal authenticity of the event.
