慈雲飲光「面壁達磨」

紙の上に落とされた墨の、筆の力強さにまず目を奪われます。

下部に描かれているのは、壁に向かって坐禅を組む達磨大師の背中。わずか数本の太い筆線だけで表現されたそのシルエットは、極限まで無駄が削ぎ落とされ、揺るぎない存在感を放っています。かすれを孕んだ濃墨のラインは、ただ形を模したものではなく、静寂の中でただひたすらに自己と向き合う坐禅の「重み」そのものを物語っているようです。

画の上部の「無功徳（むくどく）」の三字。見え返りや報いを求めず、ただあるがままに尽くすこと――武帝との問答で知られる禅の真髄が、一切の飾りのない豪快な筆致で刻み込まれています。滲みや擦れを恐れず一気に走らせた文字からは、慈雲尊者ならではの剛直で深い精神性が滲み出ています。

Jiun Onkō “Daruma Facing the Wall”

What first captures the eye is the sheer force of the brushwork, expressed through ink laid boldly upon the paper.

In the lower part of the composition is the back of Bodhidharma, seated in meditation facing a wall. Rendered with only a few thick, sweeping brushstrokes, his silhouette is stripped down to its bare essentials, yet possesses an unwavering presence. The deep black lines, enriched with areas of dry, textured brushwork, do more than simply describe his form; they seem to embody the very weight of Zen meditation—the act of turning inward and confronting oneself in absolute stillness.

Above the image are the three characters “Mu Kudoku” (無功徳), meaning “Selfless good deeds.” The phrase expresses the Zen ideal of acting without seeking reward, recognition, or personal gain, and is famously associated with Bodhidharma’s dialogue with Emperor Wu of Liang. Here, the words are inscribed in vigorous, unadorned strokes. Executed with spontaneous energy, without concern for ink bleeding or dry-brush effects, the characters convey the uncompromising strength and profound spirituality characteristic of Jiun’s calligraphy.

香月泰男「脱衣」

荒々しく重ねられた土色の画面から、黒く太い線で描かれたひとりの人物が浮かんできます。大きく身をかがめ、腕を横へ伸ばした姿。衣服を脱ぐ一瞬の動きを捉えたものですが、そこにはどこか重く、張りつめた空気が満ちています。

顔の細かい表情までは描かれていません。それでも、深くうつむく頭部やこわばった身体、節くれ立った腕を見ていると、その肉体に刻み込まれた疲労や緊張がじわじわと伝わってきます。人物も背景も、暗い褐色や黒を基調とした抑制された色彩で統一され、画面全体に乾いた静けさが漂っています。

とりわけ心に残るのは、絵具を削り、擦り込み、何度も重ねて作られた独特の画肌です。この質感は、単に人物を描写するためだけのものではなく、積み重なった長い時間や、容易には消し去れない記憶そのものを刻みつけているように思えてなりません。

「脱衣」という日常のなにげない動作を通して、香月泰男は人間の身体が持つ重みや孤独、そして生きることの切実さを描き出しています。服を脱ごうとするその姿は、何かを脱ぎ捨てようとしているようでもあり、同時に、決して手放すことのできないものを背負い続けているようにも見えます。

削ぎ落とされた構図と静かな色彩の奥から、人間の存在そのものが静かに迫ってくるような作品です。

Yasuo Kazuki "Un******ng"

From the rough, earth-toned surface, a solitary figure emerges in bold, dark lines. Bent deeply forward with one arm stretched to the side, the figure is caught in the simple act of removing clothing. Yet the scene carries a sense of weight and tension that goes far beyond an everyday gesture.

The face is not described in detail. Even so, the bowed head, stiff posture, and angular arm convey a strong sense of physical strain and weariness. Both the figure and the background are rendered in restrained shades of brown and black, giving the entire work a dry, quiet, almost austere atmosphere.

Especially striking is the painting’s heavily worked surface. The paint appears to have been scraped, rubbed, and layered again and again. This rough texture does more than define the figure; it seems to hold the passage of time itself, as well as memories that cannot easily be erased.

Through the ordinary act of “undressing,” Kazuki explores the weight of the human body, loneliness, and the intensity of simply being alive. The figure seems to be trying to cast something off, yet at the same time appears to carry a burden that cannot be removed.

With its pared-down composition and subdued palette, Un******ng quietly confronts us with the very presence of the human being.

与謝蕪村「二曲一双屏風」

江戸時代の俳人であり画家でもある、与謝蕪村の屏風です。

二曲一双の屏風に、橋や田鶴の群れ、ほうき、柴の束など、当時の身近な暮らし中の道具たち、八点の蕪村の作品が句と共に描かれ、絵と言葉が響き合いながら小さな物語を紡いでいるかのようです。

簡潔で味わい深い描写の中に、季節の気配や人々の営み、そしてクスッと笑えるような俳諧の心が感じられます。

広々とした余白からも、風の音や静かな時間の流れが伝わってくる、蕪村ならではの美しい俳画の世界です。

Yosa Buson　"A Pair of Two-Panel Folding Screens"

This is a pair of folding screens by Yosa Buson, an Edo-period haiku poet and painter.

Across the pair of two-panel screens, eight scenes—including bridges, flocks of cranes, brooms, bundles of brushwood, and other familiar subjects from everyday life—are depicted alongside Buson’s haiku. The images and words resonate with one another, as though weaving a series of small stories.

Within these simple yet evocative depictions, we sense the changing seasons, the rhythms of daily life, and Buson’s playful "haikai"spirit, which gently brings a smile.

The expansive areas of empty space seem to convey the sound of the wind and the quiet passage of time, drawing us into Buson’s distinctive and beautiful world of "haiga"—the art of haiku painting.

高山辰雄「少女と花」

鮮烈なオレンジの背景に静かな表情の横顔。

日本画家・高山辰雄の「少女と花」に一瞬で心を奪われました。

一見すると力強い色彩ですが、手前に咲く大輪の花と対照的に、繊細な点描で描かれた少女の髪。

喧騒から切り離されたような少女の静寂な表情を見ていると、まるで生命や人間の内面に向けられた「祈り」のようなものが感じられます。

梅原龍三郎 「残月 カンヌ風景」

連日、厳しい暑さが続いておりますね。
そんな夏のひとときに、涼やかな風を届けてくれるような一点を。

描かれているのは、南仏カンヌの清々しい夜明けの情景です。
画面の左上に白く優しく浮かぶ「残月」と、夜から朝へと移り変わる空の美しいグラデーション。

In the midst of this summer season, we would like to present a special piece that brings a refreshing breeze to your day.

鴨居玲「今日も終った」

鴨居玲のドローイング作品「今日も終った」。
画面右下には「PARIS Rey Camoi」のサイン。鴨居がパリで精神的・芸術的な模索を続けていた時期の、息をのむような名品です。

鉛筆で執拗なまでに重ねられた無数の線。主人公の内面にある孤独や焦燥、そして生きることへの執念そのものを削り出しているかのようです。グラスを包み込む手、深く刻まれた表情の陰影。裏面に記された「今日も終った」という言葉は、一日の終わりに生じる安堵とも諦念ともつかない、生身の独白のように胸に刺さります。

東京美術倶楽部の鑑定書と日動画廊のシールに加え、2000年刊行の『鴨居玲画集（p.325／No.162）』には類似作も掲載。さらに本作は、名優・内藤武敏氏の旧蔵品です。

Rei Kamoi "After the Day"

This drawing by Rei Kamoi is titled After the Day. In the lower right corner appears the signature “PARIS Rey Camoi.” Created during a period when Kamoi was continuing his intense spiritual and artistic quest in Paris, this is a truly breathtaking work.

Countless pencil lines are layered with almost obsessive intensity, as though carving out the very essence of the figure’s inner loneliness, anxiety, and fierce determination to live. The hand wrapped around the glass and the deeply shadowed expression convey an overwhelming emotional presence. The words inscribed on the reverse, Another Day Is Over, pierce the heart like a raw, deeply personal monologue—an utterance suspended somewhere between relief and resignation at the close of another day.

In addition to a certificate of authenticity issued by the Tokyo Art Club and a label from Nichido Gallery, a similar work is illustrated in Rei Kamoi: The Complete Works, published in 2000 (p. 325, No. 162). The present work also comes from the former collection of the distinguished Japanese actor Taketoshi Naito.

仙厓義梵「高砂」

画面に目を向けると、思わず笑みがこぼれてしまうような、なんとも愛らしく、ユーモラスな老夫婦の姿が描かれています。

能の演目として知られる「高砂」の翁（おきな）と媪（おうな）を題材にした本作は、仙厓特有の、無駄を削ぎ落とした「ヘタウマ」とも評される自由奔放な線。それは一見、迷いなくサラリと描かれたようでありながら、老夫婦の長年連れ添った空気感や、お互いへの信頼、そして年を重ねたことへの「いとおしさ」を完璧に捉えています。

難解な禅の教えを、誰にでもわかる言葉と絵で説き明かした仙厓。
この一幅をじっと見つめているうちに、心がじんわりと温かくなり、おめでたい福気が画面から溢れ出してくるような、至高の味わいを持つ一幅です。

Sengai Gibon, "Takasago"

As one turns one’s gaze to the painting, an irresistibly charming and humorous elderly couple comes into view, bringing a smile to the viewer’s face.

This work depicts the old man and old woman from "Takasago", a well-known Noh play. Rendered in Sengai’s distinctive, free-spirited lines—pared down to their essence and often described as “heta-uma”(seemingly naive yet skillful) or artful naivety—the figures appear at first glance to have been drawn effortlessly and without hesitation. Yet within these simple strokes, Sengai perfectly captures the atmosphere of a couple who have spent many years together, their mutual trust, and the tender affection that comes with age.

Sengai was known for conveying profound Zen teachings through words and images that anyone could understand. As one continues to look at this painting, the heart is gently warmed, and an auspicious sense of joy seems to overflow from the image. It is a work of supreme charm and refinement.

曽我蕭白 「壽老蹴鞠図」

本作は、長寿を司る寿老人が蹴鞠を見上げる姿を、水墨の簡潔な筆致で表した一幅です。

大きく誇張された額や愛嬌ある表情は蕭白らしい造形感覚を示し、濃墨による衣と広い余白との対比が、画面に軽快なリズムを生み出しています。わずかな筆線で人物の存在感を表す表現には、蕭白の卓越した筆力がうかがえます。

吉祥を象徴する蹴鞠と寿老人を題材とした本作は、蕭白独自の大胆な構成と自由闊達な水墨表現がよく表れた優品です。『「蕭白ショック!! 曾我蕭白と京の画家たち」（千葉市美術館、2012年開催）に掲載類似のの作品（p.55／No.36、京都国立博物館所蔵）』が知られています。

Soga Shōhaku, "Jurojin and Kemari"

This hanging scroll depicts Jurojin, the deity of longevity, looking up at a kemari ball, rendered in concise ink brushwork.

The greatly exaggerated forehead and charming expression reveal Shōhaku’s distinctive sense of form, while the contrast between the deep ink of the robe and the expansive blank space creates a light, rhythmic composition. The figure’s vivid presence, conveyed through only a few brushstrokes, demonstrates Shōhaku’s exceptional command of the brush.

Combining the auspicious motifs of kemari and Jurojin, this work is a fine example of Shōhaku’s bold composition and free-spirited ink expression. A comparable work is known in the collection of the Kyoto National Museum, reproduced in 「Shōhaku Shock!! Soga Shōhaku and Kyoto Painters」 (Chiba City Museum of Art, 2012, p. 55, No. 36）
