版画作家 杉田徹 氏の新作木版画を、
芸艸堂WEBショップにてご紹介。
今回ご紹介する作品は、アメリカを
拠点に活動する杉田氏と、
京都で長年木版画制作に携わってきた
彫師：北村昇一、摺師：古川元偉
による共同制作です。
杉田氏の原画が持つ、水彩画のような
繊細な色彩や表情を、木版画なら
ではの技法によって一色ずつ丁寧に彫り、
摺り重ねて仕上げています。
普段、芸艸堂で木版画制作をお願い
している職人とのご縁から、
今回この作品を取り扱わせていただく
ことになりました。
作家の感性と、京都の伝統的な木版画技術。
それぞれの表現が一つの作品の中で重なり
合うことで、独特の風合いを
持った木版画が生まれています。
ぜひ、原画とはまた異なる、
木版画ならではの色彩と質感をご覧ください。
なお、杉田氏が現在活動されている
アメリカへ戻られたため、今回は
各作品1点ずつの取り扱いとなります。

絵師略歴 杉田 徹
滋賀県野洲市生まれ
京都教育大学美術科卒業、
京都精華大学版画科研究生修了、
サンフランシスコ·カリフォルニア
州立大学大学院修了。
コロラド州のグランドジャンクション
での教職を経て、現在ディアブロ·バレー·
カレッジ（Diablo Valley College）教授。
1990年に日本を離れ、中南米と中近東の
放浪の後、サンフランシスコ·ベイエリア
に活動の拠点を構える。
版画を中心に幅広いメディアで、
アメリカを中心に日本、ヨーロッパ、
中南米での発表を続けている。
美術館所蔵作品はAchenbach
Foundation of Graphic Artsを含め多数。
絵本「Floating Lanterns & Golden Shrines」
の挿絵も担当。
カリフォルニア州ベイエリア、
アルバニー市在住。
Toru Sugita
Born and raised in Japan, traveled extensively throughout Latin America
and the Middle East, eventually becoming
involved in the Bay Area
community as an artist and an art educator.
Toru received a MFA in printmaking from
San Francisco State University.
He illustrated the award-winning book,
“Floating Lanterns and Golden Shrines.”
His prints can be found in public collections including the Achenbach Foundation
of Graphic Arts in the Fine Art Museum
of San Francisco.
In 2006 Toru moved to Grand Junction,
Colorado, where he focused
on teaching and multimedia collaborative
works.In 2009 he returned to the Bay Area
as a faculty member at Diablo Valley College,
Pleasant Hill, where he is in charge of the printmaking programs.
Lives in Albany, California.
