Kennedi Carter, the Grand Prize winner of the international Collotype Competition HARIBAN AWARD 2025, organized by Benrido, will be held at Huko, near Heian Jin'gu Shrine. This exhibition is one of the KG＋2026 PICK UP.

In this work, Kennedy Carter quietly illuminates how the history, culture, and traditions of spiritual practice embedded within African American communities in the American South are closely tied to the land. Water emerges as a symbolic medium of baptism, purification, and communion with their ancestors, while evoking memories of their history. The words in the title suggest the cyclical nature of diaspora — being taken away, carried across distances, and returned — linking the individual body with the collective memory on a profound level.

The photographs are very calm, and the people in them look dignified and noble. Their gazes seem to simultaneously reflect prayers for the past and the future. The depth of the shadows is depicted more richly through the nuanced tonal gradations of the collotype process.

便利堂が主催する「国際コロタイプコンペティションHARIBAN AWARD2025」において最優秀賞を受賞したケネディ・カーターの個展を、4月18日～26日まで、平安神宮そばのギャラリー「風光」にて開催いたします。本展はKG＋2026PICKUPに選ばれています。
ケネディ・カーターは、アメリカ南部の黒人コミュニティーが直面している生活環境の変化に対して、そこに息づく歴史と文化、そしてその根底を流れる霊的実践の伝統がいかに人々をこの土地へと強く結びつけているかについて本作で静かに光をあてています。水は、彼らの歴史の記憶を想起させると同時に、洗礼や浄化、祖先との交感を象徴する媒介として立ち現れる。タイトルに込められた言葉は、奪われ、運ばれ、そして還されるというディアスポラの循環を示唆し、個の身体と共同体の記憶とを深い次元で結びつけているのです。

画面に漂う静謐さのなかで、人物たちは確かな尊厳と気高さを湛え、そのまなざしは過去と未来への祈りを同時に映し出す。深い陰影の奥行きは、コロタイプの豊かな階調によっていっそう深く刻まれ ています。
