📖 New Publication — Bridge Studio Annual Vol.1
We are pleased to share the launch of ”Things Unwanted” — Bridge Studio 2026, our first annual publication.
This inaugural volume reflects on objects, spaces, labor, and presences that tend to be overlooked, avoided, or quietly pushed aside — from dust, soot, and construction debris, to vacant land, abandoned sites, invisible forms of labor, aging infrastructure, and inherited responsibilities that are difficult to sustain. Through essays by former Bridge Studio residents and collaborators — artists, designers, researchers, and local practitioners — the publication asks how “unwanted things” come into being, how they are rendered invisible, and what cities and communities choose to keep or discard.

📖 新刊のお知らせ｜Bridge Studio 年間誌 創刊号
『Things Unwanted｜不要なもの、望まれないもの』
Bridge Studioの年間誌を作成しました。創刊号のテーマは「Things Unwanted —— 不要なもの、望まれないもの、疎まれる存在」。
埃や煤、建設現場の瓦礫といった副産物、空き地や放棄された場所、メンテナンスや掃除などの不可視化された労働、老朽化したインフラ、相続されたが維持されにくい不動産や責任などを扱っています。
過去のレジデントやワークショップを通じて関わってくださったアーティスト、クリエイター、研究者、地域の実践者によるエッセイを通して、「不要なもの」「望まれないもの」がどのように生まれ、見過ごされてきたのか、そして都市や地域が何を「残し」、何を「捨ててきたのか」を問い直すことを目的としています。

Residue in Japan – Works Remaining After Departure– Studio Sale

Lin I-Chen is a painter and researcher from Taipei, now based in Kyoto, who is the first artist based at Bridge Studio and also the one who has stayed the longest. She participated in the early renovation of the studio and has a deep emotional connection to the building, which she weaves into her paintings.

Her work channels high-dimensional energies and interrogates gendered consciousness, with her Maria Series directly challenging entrenched gender orders in East Asia.

Her academic research bridges literature and visual art, focusing on how aesthetic forms can bear witness to trauma and transform collective memory, particularly in the context of Minamata disease.

This studio sale of selected works by Lin is held shortly before her departure from Japan. Fifteen works will be available, including paintings from the Maria Series and Energy Series.

This sale marks a pause, not an ending—a moment to release what remains and allow the works to continue their journey elsewhere.

林宜蓁（Lin I-Chen）は台北出身の画家・研究者で、京都を拠点に活動しています。Bridge Studioの初期リノベーションにも携わり、この建物に対して特別な愛着を抱いています。その思いは彼女の絵画にも色濃く反映されています。

彼女の作品は、高次元のエネルギーを取り入れ、ジェンダー意識への問いを重ねています。なかでも「マリアシリーズ」では、東アジア社会に根付く性別秩序に揺さぶりをかけようとしています。

また、学術研究では水俣病を主題に、文学と美術の交差点で「トラウマ」や「集団的記憶」をどう表現しうるかを追究しています。

本展は、日本を離れる直前の林宜蓁によるセレクション作品のスタジオセールです。「マリアシリーズ」「エナジーシリーズ」から選ばれた15点を展示・販売します。

このセールは終わりではなく、一つの区切りのようなものです。作品たちが新たな場所で歩みを続けるための、ささやかな旅立ちの時間でもあります。

🌱 Important updates for 2026
◉ Renovation Closure
To care for the building and make the space easier to use, Bridge Studio will be closed for renovation during the first half of 2026, with plans to re-open around September 2026.

◉ Residency Programme
From 2026 onward, the residency programme will move to an invitation- and referral-based model. We will host people who have previously engaged with Bridge Studio, as well as those introduced through trusted collaborators. This change reflects our intention to keep the programme sustainable and closely connected to its local context. Details of the 2026 residency programme will be shared once ready.

The artist talk “Entangled … on layers, lines and fibers” by our Sep-Nov resident artst Christiane Sauer was held on December 11 at Bridge Studio 🌿
Through a presentation and a short screening, Christiane shared insights and discoveries from her 66 days in Kyoto—reflecting on materials, lines, and layers, and how these elements intertwined throughout her research process. The conversations that followed were meaningful, allowing different perspectives to gently overlap and expand the discussion. It felt like a quiet yet rich moment of collective reflection.

Artist Profile
Christiane Sauer is an architect and material researcher based in Berlin, Germany. During October and November 2025, she stayed as an artist-in-residence at Bridge Studio Kyoto and Fuu Residence Keihoku, and taught at Kyoto University of the Arts.

プレゼンテーションと映像を通して、66日間の京都滞在を通して積み重ねられたリサーチや気づきが、素材や線、レイヤーをめぐる思考として丁寧に共有されました。集まってくださった皆さんとの対話もとても印象的で、それぞれの視点が重なり合いながら、リサーチのプロセスそのものを一緒にたどるような時間だったと思います。

Sharing the moment filled with the scents and tastes of plants, and the conversations that unfolded around them, made for a quiet and deeply meaningful time. We are grateful to have created this space together—one that reflects on forgotten plants, lost flavours, and the dialogue between art and cuisine.

🌿 Listening to the City — Field Recording Workshop

What if, instead of seeing, we experienced the city through sound?
In this workshop, we’ll take a short walk around Jōdoji and record the everyday sounds we encounter.
After returning to the studio, we’ll listen, compare, and arrange the recordings together — exploring how the city sounds, and how listening might shift our sense of distance, presence, and belonging.
No prior knowledge or equipment is required.
All recordings will later be shared as a collective SoundCloud album open to participants.
As autumn comes to an end, come walk the city through your ears. Everyone is welcome :)

このワークショップでは、浄土寺周辺を少し散歩しながら、日常の音を録音します。
スタジオに戻ったら、それぞれが拾ってきた音を聴き比べたり、並べたりしながら、まちの聴こえ方について考えていきます。
特別な知識や機材は必要ありません。録音した音は、後日SoundCloudアルバムとして参加者全員と共有します。

Announcement of Artist Talk & Workshop🌿

Event Title: Tools for Making — Artist Talk & Collective Workshop with Margré Steensma

Margré Steensma is an artist from the Netherlands.
Since September 30, 2025, she has been in residence at Yamaguchi Shoten (Sakyo Ward, Kyoto), conducting research focused on Tools for Making.
Her current practice explores both the physical and mental “tools” that support creative work, reflecting on form, space, rhythm, and clarity through casting experiments with everyday packaging.

This event will feature an artist talk introducing her research and practice, followed by a collective workshop where participants translate their own tools for making into sculptural forms using simple materials. Together, these pieces will form a shared installation and toolkit as traces of exchange and collaboration.

「Tools for Making — Margré Steensma アーティストトーク＆ワークショップ」

オランダ出身のアーティスト、Margré Steensma。
2025年9月30日より京都市左京区の山口書店に滞在し、〈制作のための道具：Tools for Making〉をテーマにリサーチを行っています。日常のパッケージ素材を複製し彫刻的な形を作る実験を通して、「心的・身体的な道具」が創作にどう関わるのかを探究しています。

今回のイベントでは、まず彼女の実践とリサーチを紹介するアーティストトークに続き、参加者がそれぞれの〈制作のための道具〉を小さな彫刻作品として形にするコレクティブワークショップを行います。完成した作品はひとつの共有インスタレーションとなり、また「共同ツールキット」としても残されます。

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us at Bridge Studio yesterday, and to Daniel Pescio for guiding us through the multiple facets of his work with scent.
From drinkable perfumes and sake-based fragrances developed during his residency at Villa Kujoyama, through his encounter with kōdō (香道), to his more recent experiments with rice, we were invited to smell, taste, and reflect on the many ways fragrance can inhabit our lives.
And all of this unfolded within the beautiful setting of Martin Schepkens’ .schepkens textile piece, which once again inhabited the space of Bridge Studio.

昨日ブリッジスタジオにお越しいただいた皆さま、そして香りの世界を多角的に導いてくださったダニエル・ペシオに心より感謝申し上げます。
ヴィラ九条山で制作された飲む香水や日本酒を使った香りから、香道との出会い、そして近年の米をめぐる実験に至るまで、私たちは「嗅ぐ」「味わう」という体験を通して、香りが私たちの生活に宿る多様なあり方を共有しました。
そしてすべては、再びブリッジスタジオの空間に息づいたマルタン・シェプケンスのテキスタイル作品という美しい場を背景に展開されました。

Announcement of Open Studio and Exhibition🌿

Exhibition Title: Somewhat mundane, somewhat beautiful. Who actually cares? — The Gardener

Alisha is a landscape architect, gardener, and maker from Australia.
During her residency at Bridge Studio in Kyoto, she has been observing the city’s rhythms and the subtle gestures of its people, working with plant-based pigments, textiles, ceramics, and writing to explore the relationship between care and landscape.
This Open Studio will showcase her research and creative process developed during her stay at Bridge Studio.

Artist Profile
Alisha is a landscape architect with the City of Melbourne, as well as a gardener and maker based in Narrm/Melbourne, Australia.
Her practice traces stories of place, time, and care through collaboration with ecologists, craftspeople, designers, and communities. Over the past decade, she has lived and worked in Melbourne, Oslo, and Copenhagen, exploring landscapes across scales and everyday details—learning from the values, materials, and objects that shape them.
During her residency at Bridge Studio in Kyoto, she has been observing how communities move between care and neglect, infrastructure and quiet gestures, while developing her work around these reflections.

Next Sunday at Bridge Studio, join us for The Way of the Scents – 香道 with Daniel Pescio 🌿
A special session exploring scent, taste, and the subtle beauty of Japanese fragrance traditions.

Daniel Pescio, Brazilian-born, Paris-based perfumer and fragrance artist, will share his personal journey in Japan, including projects like drinkable perfume and rice-based fragrances. Participants will be invited to smell, taste, and immerse themselves in these olfactory experiences ✨

The scenography features a textile installation by Martin Schepkens, Belgian artist and Bridge Studio summer 2025 resident. Though no longer physically here, his work – crafted from old kimono and ashes – resonates with kōdō (香道), the ceremonial art of ash and fragrance.
