This is a serene and poetic oil painting titled "Wildflowers" (No no Hana zu) by Kojiro Kosugi (b. 1944), one of the leading figures in contemporary Japanese Western-style painting (Yoga).

Born in Tokyo, Kojiro Kosugi grew up in a distinguished artistic family; his grandfather was the legendary painter Hoan Kosugi, and in his youth, he studied under the great master Kazumasa Nakagawa. This is an exceptionally gorgeous and dignified small lacquer cabinet (Ko-Tansu) featuring a magnificent display of Maki-e craftsmanship.

The entire exterior is lavishly adorned with Maki-e (sprinkled lacquer). The top panel depicts beautifully blooming cherry blossoms (Sakura) and powerful pine trees (Matsu) nestled against a majestic mountain-and-water landscape. The side panels showcase a dynamically cascading waterfall framed by vivid autumn maple leaves, alongside other seasonal flora such as autumn herbs and spring wild plants (horsetails and ferns). These rich transitions of Japan's four seasons are rendered with three-dimensional depth using raised Takamaki-e and meticulous Kirikane (cut gold/silver leaf) techniques. The ornately crafted, silver-toned metal fittings further tighten and elevate the overall presence of the piece.
