本展は、ロンドンを拠点とするルイス・デヴィッドソンと、東京在住の西永和輝による二人展です。
デヴィッドソンは、本展に際して約1ヶ月小平に滞在し、素材の収集と制作を行いました。写真4枚目のライトボックスの作品はデヴィッドソンの新作で、東京で収集した素材をもとに制作され、虫取りカゴや小平市のゴミ袋が中に封入されています。彼はこれまで、プラスチックをグローバリズムにおける匿名的な素材として扱ってきましたが、ここではすこし異なったアプローチが試みられています。
西永の新作は16-17世紀の船大工マシュー・ベイカーによる船のデザインに基づいています。設計図の理念上は厚みがゼロであると思考される接合部には、実際には厚みが存在し、西永はそれを強調するようにそこから接着剤をはみださせています。
素材と接合について独自の優れたアプローチを持ったアーティストによる二人展です。この機会にぜひご鑑賞いただけますと幸いです。
This exhibition is a joint exhibition by London-based Lewis Davidson and Tokyo-based Kazuki Nishinaga.
Davidson stayed in Kodaira for about a month for this exhibition, collecting materials and creating his works. In the fourth photograph, Davidson's new work is a lightbox; inside it are materials he collected in Tokyo, such as insect cages and Kodaira-designated garbage bags. He has previously treated plastic as an anonymous material in the context of globalism, but here he tries a slightly different approach.
Nishinaga's new work is based on the ship blueprints of 16th-17th century shipbuilder Matthew Baker. While the blueprints conceptually suggest zero thickness at the joints, in reality they do have thickness, and Nishinaga emphasizes this by allowing glue to ooze out from these joints.
Both artists bring distinctly individual approaches to materials and joints. We hope you will take this opportunity to view their work.
