側面を槍鉋（やりがんな）で仕上げ、面取りをして加工が完了しました。
木口は鉋などで平滑にはせず、あえて鋸の挽き目を残しているとのこと。

The sides of the log were finished with a yari-ganna (Japanese spear plane), and the edges were chamfered to complete the preparation.

The end grain was intentionally left with the saw marks, rather than being smoothed with a hand plane, preserving the texture created during the cutting process.

📷準備のようす

8月22日（土）開催の「夏休み子ども体験教室：木琴」で、興福寺執事長・辻さんにお話しいただく際に使用するアフリカ欅（けやき）の丸太を、当館技能員が加工しました。

保管中に傷んでしまった木口を切り落とす作業。
約二尺（約60cm）の丸太は、技能員の鋸には大きく、時間をかけながらの作業となりましたが、無事に切り落とすことができました。

当日の体験に向けて、着々と準備を進めています🌳

※「夏休み子ども体験教室：木琴」は事前申込制、先着順のイベントです。

📷 Behind the Scenes

Our museum's technical specialist has been preparing an African zelkova log for the Summer Children's Workshop: Xylophone, taking place on Saturday, August 22.

The log will be used during a talk by Mr. Tsuji, Chief Administrator of Kōfuku-ji Temple.

To prepare it, the damaged end of the log, which had deteriorated during storage, had to be carefully cut away. At about 60 cm (24 in.) in diameter, it was larger than our specialist's saw, so the work took time—but the cut was completed successfully.

We're steadily getting everything ready for the workshop! 🌳

Please note: The Summer Children's Workshop: Xylophone requires advance registration. The workshop is currently full, and registrations are being accepted for the waiting list only.
