「鳳凰」Hoo

鳳風の身体に用いられた数百枚の論子の裂が、光の屈折により輝き方を変える。
神々しくもあり、羽の場やかさも表現している。
尾羽に透け感のある組の裂を用いることで、軽やかさや優雅さも生まれる。
主となる風凰を際立たせるために、裂には明治時代の裾模様の着物を大胆に配置している。
数十種類もの裂から生まれた生命力あふれる本作には、コロナ禍や戦争をはじめ、めまぐるしく変化する日々の中で生まれた祈りが込められている。

This work brings to view that powerful shape and spread as I saw it. I created the body of the phoenix using hundreds of pieces of a rinzu silk satin damask, which has a sheen that changes depending on how it catches light. This gives the feathers a graceful and divine appearance. For the tail feathers, I used ro, an airy, semi-sheer silk that lends a light and elegant feel. To emphasize the phoenix as the main subject, for the background I used the decorative sleeves of Meiji-period kimono pieced together in a bold design. Into this work, created from dozens of different fabrics, I poured my prayers for the world as they arose during the tumultuous days of the pandemic and war.

「鳳華」

2026年３月に制作されたこの最新作は
文化十年（1813年）に観音菩薩へ奉納された、江戸時代後期の刺繍の打敷でした。
約200年の時を経た刺繍のほつれを補修し、青海波文の伝統的な文様を取り入れることで、新たな彩りをまとった作品として生まれ変わりました。

鳳凰は古来より再生・浄化・繁栄を象徴し、蔦は力強い生命力や縁の長久を表すとされます。
これらの意匠から、祈願や供養のために奉納された当時の想いがうかがえます。

「黎明」

”全ての人の心にあたたかな希望の夜明けを“

次なる時代も幸せが続きますように
布は人と生まれ、
人と共に過ごし、逝き、
そして伝えるのだから

全ての人の幸せを祈った作品。
20世紀から21世紀へと転換するその時、5年以上の構想を経て、100年前の描きが蘇った。
年月の移ろいや人々のあたたかい気持ちを含んだ筒描きを最大限に活かすため、全面にキルティングで立体感を出し、豊かな流れの広がりを生んだ。

"May warm hope dawn in the hearts of all people.
May happiness continue to the next generation.
Fabrics are born with people.
They live with them and die with them and carry on their stories."
This work expresses my hope for the happiness of all people.
I worked on it for more than five years during the tumultuous times as the 20th century gave way to the 21st.
It gives new life to a tsutsugaki cloth that was made at least a hundred years earlier. Such cloths, used to bundle and protect clothing and bedding, are a traditional gift to a bride as she leaves home for a new life. Tsutsugaki is a resist technique in which designs are drawn onto the fabric with rice paste prior to dyeing. To emphasize the warm human emotions imbued within this precious cloth, and the sense of the time passed, I used quilt stitching to create dimension and movement in the overall composition.

「黎明の鳳華」展

３月１日(日)〜５月３１日(日)

出雲キルト美術館は、本年で開館20周年を迎えます。
作品が生まれた自然の中で鑑賞していただきたい…。
その想いから当館は誕生しました。
この20年は社会が大きく変化した時代でもあり、
その影響は作品にも静かに刻まれています。
本年は、その歩みを代表作とともに振り返ります。

今春は、2000年の希望の夜明けを願い制作された「黎明」
コロナウイルスや戦争後に生まれた祈りの作品「鳳凰」を
中心に、江戸期の刺繍を修復し制作された新作「鳳華」
など、八幡垣睦子が節目ごとに紡いできた作品と共に、新たな表現の融合を空間の中でゆっくりとご鑑賞くださいませ。

厳寒の冬に凛として咲く寒椿を表現した作品。
1000枚からなる規則的な長方形の裂を無彩色のステージに見立て、赤い縮緬地で儚げな椿を演出している。
花の細部を観察すると、花は刺繍で仕上げられている。
縁には帯地を用い、裾を花嫁の打掛のような厚みがある仕立てにしている。

This work expresses the dignity of the winter camellia, which blooms in the harshest cold. The neutral background is made up of more than a thousand consistently sized rectangles.
Swirling across this stage, the delicate camellia blossoms of chirimen crepe silk appear fragile and fleeting. If you examine the flowers closely, you'll see that the centers are detailed with embroidery. The border and edging of this work are made with fabric salvaged from obi kimono sashes. The filled edge at the bottom is made to resemble the padded hem of a bride's uchikake kimono.

“作品を制作するとき、自然からのインスピレーションが大きく、自然と人との共存共栄を願っています”

"When I create a work, much of my inspiration comes from nature. It is my sincere wish that humans may co-exist with nature that we may all flourish together."

かつて出雲で頻繁に見ることのできたトキが、再び出雲の空を美しく舞う姿を願った作品。特別天然記念物である日本のトキは、2003年に環境の変化により絶滅。島根県はトキの繁殖施設を設け、動植物の新たな環境づくりに動き出し、順調に繁殖に成功している。背景は、長方形に半円を縫い合わせた数千もの小さなピースで構成されている。

The crested ibis is one of the birds that used to be seen often around Izumo. I made this work with the hope that we might once again see its beautiful dance-like flight in our skies.
Although the crested ibis is a nationally protected species, due to degradation of its habitat caused by human activity the last crested ibis in Japan born in the wild died in 2003. Shimane Prefecture set up breeding facilities and instituted measures to provide new habitats for wildlife, and the crested ibis has been successfully bred. The background of this work is made up of thousands of tiny pieces I made by sewing semicircles onto rectangles.
