My name is Blake Hobson‑Dimas, I am a classically trained theatre artist based in Vancouver, Canada. Though I primarily work as a performer, my time at Studio Kura has led me toward creating wearable art as a form of self‑exploration. The first outfit is a skirt and blouse inspired by the China Poblana. Traditionally, the China Poblana is worn by Mexican women during holidays, parades and folk dance performances. It reflects the cultural strength and resilience I’ve witnessed in Mexican Women throughout my life. My mother is Mexican, and as I grow older I better understand the importance of the qualities she embodies. She is stern yet gentle. She is steadfast and loving. This piece honors the parts of myself shaped by her character.

The second outfit is my interpretation of the Japanese Kimono, created to represent the personal growth I’ve experienced during my stay at Studio Kura. Knitting is slow, repetitive, and demanding. I’ve come to see it as a parallel to tangible changes in my own character. Making this garment gave me long stretches of time to reflect on my past, present, and future. Even when it was difficult, I kept knitting, and I kept reflecting.

Evolution explores the idea of growth through curiosity, experience, and the willingness to step beyond what is familiar. Growth is not simply becoming something new, but carrying what we have learned with us as we continue to discover what we are capable of becoming. Coming to Itoshima, Yelitza’s intention was to further develop her artistic practice while opening herself to new experiences, techniques, and ways of seeing her surroundings. The residency became an opportunity to create without limitations, experiment with new skills, and allow the environment around her to influence her work. Yelitza’s colorful paintings continue to explore the idea that there is always more than meets the eye. Beneath each vibrant surface is a deeper reflection of observation, emotion, discovery, and personal growth. Each painting in this exhibition was created from her experiences in Itoshima. Together, the works represent not only the places she encountered, but also the ways in which those experiences shaped her artistic journey. Evolution is a reflection of where she began, what she has learned, and the possibilities that emerge when we allow ourselves to keep growing.

「Where the Stream Begins」は、Jamiesonが日本・糸島での滞在中に制作した写真シリーズです。白黒フィルムで撮影し、伝統的な暗室プリントの技法を用いて制作されました。Jamiesonにとって、フィルム撮影と暗室プリントのどちらも、このシリーズで初めて取り組んだものです。

「私は、ある種の静けさをいつも探しています。水の中にいるときのような、やわらかく穏やかな静寂です。ここ糸島では、その感覚に何度も出会うことができました。」

Where the Stream Begins is a photographic series made during Jamieson’s time in Itoshima, Japan. Using black-and-white film and traditional darkroom printing, it is the first series Jamieson has made using either process.

“There is a kind of silence I search for, a soft stillness, like the feeling of being underwater. I’ve found it many times here in Itoshima.”

私の名前はミラ＝アリーナ・シュミットです。ドイツ出身のパフォーマンス／演劇アーティストです。

この数週間、私は「沈黙」についてリサーチしてきました。世界に存在するあらゆるあり方の中で経験されうる、ひとつの「存在のかたち」としての沈黙です。異なる文化における沈黙、人と人とのあいだにある沈黙、パフォーマンスにおける沈黙、そして、耳を塞ぎたくなるほど大きく叫ぶ沈黙について学んできました。

私は「耳をつんざくような沈黙」を、未知の空間として捉えています。あらゆることが可能でありながら、一見すると何も起きていないその空間では、「すべて」と「何もないこと」が限りなく近くにある感覚が、具体的なものとして立ち現れます。それを不安に感じる人もいれば、深い安らぎを感じる人もいます。そのどちらも、真実であり得ます。

パフォーマンスで使用するペットボトルは、海岸で拾ったものです。それらは「空っぽ」で満たされています。透明で、そこにはメッセージや思考、記憶、歌、アイデアが入っているかもしれません。あるいは、本当に何も入っていないのかもしれません。そのすべてが、あり得るのです。

私は、自分の身体とペットボトルがひとつの環境を共有することで、秩序と無秩序、コントロールしている状態と迷子になっている状態について実験しています。私の作品は、観客と共有するパフォーマンスの場において、沈黙が生み出す独特の緊張感を探るものです。

My name is Mira-Alina Schmidt. I am a performance/theater artist from Germany.

In the past few weeks, I have been researching silence. Silence as a form of presence that can be experienced in every aspect of being in the world. I have learned about silences in different cultures, silences between people, silences in performance, silence that screams so loud it is deafening.

I understand deafening silence as a space of the unknown. In this space, where everything is possible and seemingly nothing happens, the closeness of everything and nothing becomes tangible. To some, this is unsettling; to others, deeply peaceful. Both can be true.

The plastic bottles I use in my performance were found on the beach. They are full of emptiness. They are transparent. They could contain a message, a thought, a memory, a song, an idea, or maybe just nothing. All of this can be true.

By using my body and a shared environment with the plastic bottles, I experiment with order and disorder, being in control and being lost. My work explores the unique tension silence creates in a performative setting that I share with the audience.

このイラストレーションシリーズは、日本の田園風景の中にある夏を描いたものです。青々と広がる田んぼ、その周囲に響く虫たちの羽音、まとわりつくような暑さの中をすっと通り抜けるやさしい風、そして提灯や花火の光に照らされた、活気あふれる祭りの夜。作品は、そうした夏の季節の美しさを捉えています。

子どもの頃へのノスタルジーを通して描かれたこれらの風景は、無邪気な好奇心や友情、何ものにも縛られない日々の物語を伝えています。毎日、そして曲がり角の先に新しい冒険が待っていたような、どこか今よりもシンプルだった時代の記憶を呼び起こします。

それは、その瞬間をただ純粋に生き、過ぎ去ったことやこれから起こることを評価したり判断したりすることのなかった、まっすぐな記憶です。

The illustration series is a portrait of summer in Japan’s countryside. It captures the beauty of the season — the lush green of the rice fields and all the humming and buzzing around them, the gentle breeze that cuts through the heavy blanket of heat, as well as the energetic festival nights illuminated by the light of lanterns and fireworks.

Seen through the lens of childhood nostalgia, the scenes tell the story of innocent curiosity, friendship and carefree days. They rekindle memories of a supposedly simpler time, filled with exciting adventures every day and around every corner. Memories that feel pure, lived in the moment, and free of judgment about what has been and what will be.

この作品群は、日本で夏を過ごす中で出会った、見慣れない風景から始まりました。

強い日差し、高い気温、そしてそうした環境によっていっそう鮮やかに感じられる夏の色彩。それらは、これまで私が慣れ親しんできた風景とは異なる感覚的な体験をもたらしました。同じアジアに暮らす者として、周囲の風景には親しみを感じる一方で、どこか微妙な違いも感じました。植物のかたちや色、海や浜辺の様子。そうした場所を、これまでの見慣れたものの見方で理解しようとするのではなく、自分が感じた「見慣れなさ」そのものを観察し、自分なりの方法で解釈したいと考えました。

こうした体験は、自然と作品の素材や制作プロセスにもつながっていきました。身近にあった段ボールに絵を描き、浜辺を歩きながら拾った貝殻の小さな表面を、絵を描くための支持体として使いました。また、ノミを使って木を直接彫り、刻んだ痕跡や空間の中に絵を描いています。

私にとって、貝殻、段ボール、木は、単なる素材ではありません。それらは、この場所に滞在しながら「見ること」「歩くこと」「発見すること」の経験を受けとめる表面です。

私が感じた日本の夏の鮮やかな色彩を、それぞれ異なる形や質感を持つ表面へと移していくことで、実際に目にした風景は、私自身の記憶や感覚を通過しながら、少しずつ別の姿へと変化していきます。

This body of work began with the unfamiliar landscapes I encountered while spending the summer in Japan.

The intense sunlight, high temperatures, and the vivid colors of summer heightened by these conditions gave me a different sensory experience from the landscapes I had been accustomed to. As a fellow Asian, I found the surroundings both familiar and subtly different—the forms and colors of the plants, as well as the sea and the beaches. Rather than trying to understand this place through familiar ways of seeing, I wanted to observe the sense of unfamiliarity I experienced and interpret it in my own way.

These experiences naturally extended into the materials and processes of my work. I painted on cardboard, a material readily available in my surroundings, and collected shells while walking along the beach, using their small surfaces as grounds for images. I also carved directly into wood with a chisel, leaving marks and spaces to hold painted images.

For me, shells, cardboard, and wood are more than simply materials; they are surfaces that hold the experiences of seeing, walking, and discovering while staying here. By transferring the vivid colors of the Japanese summer as I perceived them onto surfaces with different forms and textures, the actual landscape gradually transforms as it passes through my memory and senses.

少しの間、じっとしていてください。
顕微鏡を通して見るかのように、自分の肌を想像してみてください。毛穴が開き、外の世界と内なる世界をつなぐ小さな通路となっている様子を思い浮かべます。
そのまま静けさの中にいてください。何が聞こえますか？
その音には色がありますか？ 何か感情を呼び起こしますか？
それが自分の内側へ染み込んでいくのに身を委ねてください。
私は以前から「吸収すること」について考えながらStudio Kuraを訪れました。しかし、その意味を理解し始めたのは、糸島の静けさ、無数の緑と青、海と田んぼ、蝉の声、トンボの飛ぶ姿に触れてからでした。
私はキャンバスや木、紙に、水彩絵具とアクリル絵具を使い、多量の水を用いて描きます。しばらくの間、素材は私が目指しているものと同じ状態になります。つまり、浸透性を保つのです。表面は膨らみ、受け入れ、色を通し、水を流します。そこに残るものは、その交わりの記録です。
私自身も、同じように制作することを学びました。理解する前にまず受け入れ、何かに心を動かされ、それが何だったのかを後から知るのです。
完成したと思っていた絵に、再び手を加えることもあります。その絵の外側にある何かによって、私自身が変わったからです。自分を開いたままでいることは、自らが組み替えられてしまう可能性を受け入れることでもあります。そして、変わり続けることそのものが、制作なのです。

Stay still for a moment. Imagine your skin as if seen through a microscope; imagine your pores opening up, little channels that connect the outside world to your inner world. Remain in silence. What do you hear? Does the sound hold a color? Does it spark an emotion? Allow it to sink in.

I arrived at Studio Kura already thinking about absorbency, but it was in Itoshima — its silence, its thousand greens and blues, its sea and rice fields, its cicadas, the flight of dragonflies — that I began understanding it.

I paint on canvas, wood and paper, with watercolor and acrylic, using a great deal of water. For a while, the material does what I am trying to do: it remains permeable. The surface swells, receives, lets color pass through, and drains. What stays behind is a record of that exchange.

I have learned to work the same way: to receive before I understand, to let something move me and only later know what it was. Sometimes I return to a painting I thought was finished, because something outside it has changed me. To stay open is to risk being rearranged (and to keep being rearranged is the work).

「海のひらくところ（Where the Sea Opens）」は、糸島・二見ヶ浦の神聖な夫婦岩の間、その深い海の底にあると信じられている、龍神の海中宮殿「竜宮城」を想像した作品シリーズです。

日本の民間伝承と海辺の風景から着想を得て、海を、現世と霊的な世界をつなぐ生きた境界として捉えています。龍神とその水中の王国を垣間見るような想像上の情景を通して、人間の目には見えないところで、神話、自然、民間伝承が溶け合う世界を描き出します。

作品では、私たちにとって馴染み深い糸島の海の下に隠された世界を思い描いています。そこでは海の精霊たちが、海のリズムと静かに調和しながら存在しています。それぞれの場面は、この目に見えない世界へと続く入口となり、世代を超えて語り継がれてきた物語へと私たちを導いていきます。

Where the Sea Opens imagines Ryūgū-jō, the underwater palace of Ryūjin, believed to lie in the deep sea between the sacred couple stones of Futamigaura, Itoshima. Drawing from Japanese folklore and the coastal landscape, the series explores the sea as a living threshold between the living and the spirit world. Through imagined glimpses of Ryūjin and his submerged kingdom, the series evokes a world where myth, nature, and folklore merge beyond the eyes of humans. The works envision the hidden realm beneath the familiar waters of Itoshima, where sea spirits exist in quiet harmony with the rhythms of the sea. Each scene becomes a passage into this unseen world, and the stories that are carried across generations.
