【FAAM AIR 2025 Term 2&3｜Installation View 】

《こういう記録》
進藤冬華

明治期に福岡から人々が入植した札幌市福移地区の変遷と、福岡城の近現代の歴史、そして北海道と福岡における炭鉱の歴史をリサーチ。入植地と故郷の両方の視点から、幕末以降の日本と北海道の関係を見つめました。
滞在中にはオープンスタジオも実施。来場者との交流をきっかけに、作家自身も描き、つくることを通して、資料や記録、歴史との新たな関わり方を探りました。

Shindo Fuyuka

For this residency, Shindo conducted research on the transition of the Fukui district in Sapporo, where settlers from Fukuoka migrated during the Meiji era; the modern and contemporary history of Fukuoka Castle; and the histories of coal mining in both Hokkaido and Fukuoka. By examining both the settlement and the settlers’ homeland, she explored the relationship between Hokkaido and Japan from the final years of the Edo period onward.

During the residency, Shindo also organized an open studio. Through interactions with visitors, she began drawing and making things with her own hands, exploring different ways of engaging with resources, archives, and history.

竹和紙のカット作業を終え、2月最終週からついに織りの工程に入ったアルピタ。

博多織や久留米絣といった伝統織物のリサーチをもとに、博多べいや畳、福岡で見た舞台や古地図などから着想を得ています。

横糸には日々の出会いをたどり、縦糸にはまちを流れる水域を表現しながら、16日間にわたる織りのプロセスがスタートしました。頑張れアルピタ！

After completing the bamboo washi cutting process, Arpita has finally moved into the weaving stage in the final week of February.

Developed through research on traditional textiles such as Hakata-ori and Kurume-kasuri, and inspired by the patterns of Hakata Bay, tatami weaving, as well as theatrical practices and historical maps from Fukuoka, the work takes the form of paper weaving.

Tracing her daily encounters in the weft, and expressing the waterways flowing through the city in the warp, a 16-day weaving process has begun. Go Arpita!

ルーカスの体育館（グランド・スタジオ）全体を使ったインスタレーション制作が進んでいます。広さはもちろん、天井高のあるこの空間の中で、どのように作品を展開していくのか。

2月の第3週には、アジア美術館のボランティアスタッフの皆さんの協力のもと、作品に使用する大量の和紙のシワ伸ばしや糊付け、カットなどの作業が、一つひとつ丁寧に進められました。

ルーカスにとってもこれまでで最大規模となる作品。どのような仕上がりになるのか、とても楽しみです。

Lucas is developing an installation that takes over the entire gymnasium (Grand Studio).
Within this expansive, high-ceilinged space, Lucas explores how to develop his work.

During the third week of February, a large amount of washi used in the work was carefully prepared with the support of volunteer staff from the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. Each sheet was gradually flattened, glued, and cut, one step at a time.

This will be the largest-scale work Lucas has created to date. We are very much looking forward to seeing how it will come together.

【FAAM AIR 2025 Term 3｜Feb Week 2 】

2月12日、ルーカスは佐賀県佐賀市の名尾手すき和紙、そして福岡県八女市の松尾和紙工房を訪問しました。

午前中は名尾手すき和紙を訪問。300年の歴史を持ち、和紙の原料である梶の木の栽培から紙漉きまで、すべての工程を一貫して行う工房です。原料となる梶や、煮て繊維状にしたものなどを実際に見せていただきながら、和紙がどのような工程を経て完成するのかを、施設内を巡りながら丁寧にご案内いただきました。
また、店舗奥のギャラリースペースにもご案内いただき、床・天井・壁すべてが和紙で構成された空間を体験。ルーカスにとっても非常に充実した時間となりました。

午後は八女市の松尾和紙工房へ移動し、作品制作に使用する和紙の選定と購入を行いました。リサーチ段階からサポートいただいている松尾さんに、作品の構想を共有しながら、色や厚み、枚数などの条件を相談し、制作に向けた素材調達を進めました。

On February 12, Lucas visited Nao Tesuki Washi in Saga City, Saga Prefecture, and Matsuo Japanese Paper Studio in Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture.

In the morning, he visited Nao Tesuki Washi, a workshop with over 300 years of history. At Nao Tesuki Washi, he entire process—from cultivating kaji trees (one of the raw materials for washi) to papermaking—is carried out in-house. While being guided through the facility, Lucas was introduced to each step of the process and was able to see the kaji plants and the fibers produced by boiling the bark.
He was also shown the gallery space at the back of the shop, where the floors, walls, and ceiling are all made of washi. The immersive environment made it a particularly enriching experience for him.

In the afternoon, Lucas traveled to Matsuo Japanese Paper Studio in Yame, where he selected and purchased washi for his work. Matsuo-san, who has supported his research from the early stages, helped source materials while discussing Lucas’s concept, including details such as color, thickness, and quantity.

【FAAM AIR 2025 Term 3｜Feb Week 1 】

2月4日、アルピタは久留米絣および掛川織のリサーチのため、福岡県広川町と大木町を訪れました。

まず、広川町では、1948年創業の久留米絣の製造・販売を行う織元・坂田織物を訪問し、久留米絣の生産工程を見学させていただきました。アルピタは、インドのイカット（IKAT）との多くの共通点を見出し、強い関心を持ってお話を伺っていました。

その後、1886年創業の老舗インテリアメーカーであるイケヒコ・コーポレーションを訪問しました。伝統的な掛川織に新たな表現を掛け合わせた畳作品などを見学しました。

さらに、福岡県い業会館にも足を運びました。同館は1936年に建設された、福岡県のい草・畳産業の歴史を今に伝える国登録有形文化財です。現在は複数の団体が入居しており、作り手の方々と直接お話しする機会にも恵まれました。

多くの出会いと学びに触れ、充実した1日となりました

On February 4, Arpita visited Hirokawa and Ōki in Fukuoka Prefecture to conduct research on Kurume Kasuri and Kakegawa-ori textiles.

In Hirokawa, she visited Sakata Orimono, a weaving studio established in 1948 that produces and sells traditional Kurume Kasuri. She was given the opportunity to observe the production process, where she found many similarities with Indian ikat techniques, engaging with great interest in the discussion.

She then visited IKEHIKO CORPORATION, a long-established interior manufacturer founded in 1886. She observed tatami works that combine traditional Kakegawa-ori with contemporary expression.

The visit continued to the Igyoukaikan (Igusa Weaver Business Center) a Registered Tangible Cultural Property built in 1936 that preserves the history of the region’s igusa and tatami industry. Several organizations are currently based in the building, and Arpita had the opportunity to speak directly with local makers.

It was a day rich with encounters and insights, offering valuable perspectives for her ongoing research.

4人のアーティストが福岡で問う「記憶」

今回参加したアーティストは、チェン・イェンチー（陳彥齊）、進藤冬華、アルピタ・アカンダ、小田原ルーカスの4名。彼らの関心は、音、移民、家族、身体など多岐にわたるが、それぞれに「記憶」と深く結びついているという。ときに不明瞭で断片的な記憶は、誰かと共有することも難しい。アーティストたちはその曖昧さを無視したり都合のいい事実にすり替えたりすることなく、記憶の手ざわりと想像力を頼りに、誠実に表現しようと試みる。

【FAAM AIR 2025 Term 3｜Feb Week1】

2月1日、ルーカスとアルピタは、江戸時代から続く技術を受け継ぐ、九州有数の伝統工芸の集積地である福岡県八女市を訪れました。

まずは八女伝統工芸館へ。ここでは、仏壇、提灯、石灯ろう、手漉き和紙など、八女が誇る多様な伝統工芸を一度に見ることができます。当日は、手漉き和紙の体験も行いました。

その後、お昼を挟んで古民芸を扱う「花ごよみ」へ。古い箪笥や蔵の扉、建具、欄間、塗り物、茶道具、古布、絣など、さまざまな品が並びます。古い建具に関心のあるルーカスは、店主・峰松さんに倉庫をご案内いただきながら、大正期から昭和初期にかけての扉の変遷について話を伺いました。

続いて、八女手漉き和紙を用いたオブジェやあかり、間仕切り、アクセサリーなどを手がける「ギャラリー Ki to Te」を訪問。和紙の繊細な表現を活かした多様な作品をご紹介いただきました。

さらに、FAAM AIRでも幾度となくお世話になっている松尾和紙工房へ。初めての訪問となったルーカスとアルピタは、豊富な和紙に触れながら、大きな刺激を受けていました。

最後に、旧上庄小レジデンスプログラムの成果展を見学するため九州芸文館へ。2025年度のアーティストであるイケナナさん、花田智浩さんにもお会いすることができました。

On February 1, Lucas and Arpita visited Yame City in Fukuoka, a region known for its traditional crafts.

They began at the Yame Traditional Craftwork Center, where they explored local crafts and took part in a washi papermaking workshop.

After lunch, they visited Hanagoyomi, a folk craft and antique shop specializing in antique furniture and architectural elements. Lucas, who is researching architectural aspects of gates and structures, learned about the evolution of traditional fittings from the Taisho to early Showa period.

The visit continued to Gallery Ki to Te and Matsuo Washi Studio, where they explored a wide range of washi-based works and materials.

They concluded the day at Kyushu Geibunkan, where they viewed the exhibition from the former Kamisho Elementary School residency program and met participating artists.

【FAAM AIR 2025 Term 3｜Jan Week 5】

1月29日、ルーカスとアルピタは博多座の見学に行きました。

博多座は1999年に開館した九州最大級の演劇専用劇場で、歌舞伎やミュージカル、宝塚歌劇、演劇など多彩なジャンルの公演が行われています。セリや廻り舞台、花道、オーケストラピットなど、多様な演出に対応できる国内有数の舞台機構を備えています。

今回は、普段は立ち入ることのできない舞台下の空間「奈落」や、転換を支える「舞台袖」、楽屋など、劇場の裏側を中心に案内いただきました。最後には約1500席を有する客席にも案内いただき、どの席からも観やすい3層構造を体感しました。

中でも、舞台下に広がる「奈落」の空間が特に印象的だったようで、ルーカスとアルピタにとって今回の見学のハイライトとなりました。

On January 29, Lucas and Arpita visited Hakataza Theater.

Opened in 1999, Hakataza is one of the largest theater venues in Kyushu, hosting a wide range of performances including kabuki, musicals, Takarazuka productions, and plays. The theater is equipped with advanced stage mechanisms—such as a revolving stage, trap lifts, a hanamichi runway, and an orchestra pit—allowing for diverse forms of stage production.

During the visit, they were guided through areas usually not accessible to the public, including the naraku (understage space), the wings where scene changes take place, and the dressing rooms. They also visited the auditorium, which seats around 1,500 people and features a three-tier structure designed for clear viewing from any seat.

Among these, the naraku—the expansive space beneath the stage—left a particularly strong impression and became a highlight of the visit for both Lucas and Arpita.
