薄茶器とは、薄茶をいただく時の抹茶を入れる容器です。木地に漆を塗ったものが多く、その他陶磁器や金属、竹など様々な素材で作られます。形も棗、中次、雪吹など多様で、それぞれに扱い方が異なります。

Usuchaki (tea caddy)
A tea container used for a session of ‘thin’ tea procedure. It comes in a variety of styles and materials, notably carved and lacquered wood, but there are also ceramic, metal, and bamboo usuchakis. According to its shape, there are subcategories of natsume, nakatsugi, fubuki, etc., which dictate the handling manner during the tea-making procedures.

茶入とは、濃茶をいただく時に抹茶を入れる小さな器です。中国産のものは「唐物」と呼ばれます。わが国では、鎌倉時代以降、主に瀬戸窯で作られましたが、桃山時代以降は、高取や備前など様々な窯で作られました。名物裂等の「仕覆」を着せて使用されます。

Cha’ire (tea caddy)
A canister-type pottery to store powdered tea, exclusively used for a session of thick tea procedure. China-made ones are categorized as karamono while, in Japan, Seto ware was predominant during the Kamakura period (1185–1333). Later in the sixteenth century onward, other kilns, such as of Takatori and Bizen wares, also produced cha’ires. Normally, it is coupled with a silk drawstring bag with distinct patterns, shifuku.
