The 4.7cm anti-tank gun casemate at Millbrook will have been open to the public exactly 40 years to the day this coming Liberation Day on May 9th 2025 and is often described as “The jewel of the Atlantikwall” by visiting enthusiasts as they say they have never seen a bunker surviving in such original condition, let alone using the original lighting wiring circuits (!), within the former Atlantikwall today. Ironically, the bunker escaped the worst of the post war scrap drives or stripping out thanks to a nearby resident getting the bunker entrance sealed and landscaped in 1948 as it was spoiling the view!
The history of the site is also unique for having one of its commanders return (Herr Henkel in 1988) with his first hand recollections presented today as well as the bunker later being manned by retrained stranded Kriegsmarine personnel from late 1944 as Matrosen Company König who’s onetime presence is still very much evident today from a rare local example of a political orientated mural painted on the entrance wall (Leader (Hi**er) orders we follow) to maps and pin up girl posters added to the crew room walls! Remarkably paper labels with each of the last seven sailors ranks and names also still survive on the ammunition room wall!
