A new Era.

Worn by Dieter Braun during his 1973 250cc World Championship season, this suit belongs to a pivotal chapter in motorcycle racing history.

A new approach began to emerge as Dainese arrived in the paddock: brighter colors, greater protection and innovative construction solutions designed around the needs of the rider.

01/08/1976 — A witness to history.

The AGV X1 Air System worn by during the 1976 German Grand Prix bears the marks of one of the most dramatic chapters in motorsport.

Lost for more than 38 years, it is now preserved at the Dainese ARchivio, where it continues to tell its story to fans, enthusiasts and future generations.

The back hump.

At high speeds, aerodynamics plays a crucial role in ensuring stability and control — and modern riders’ equipment has evolved alongside the motorcycle to support it.

For many years, however, riders relied largely on physical effort to maintain head and body position.

A significant step forward came unexpectedly in 1988, when Dainese introduced the back hump on professional racing leathers.

Originally conceived as a soft extension to protect the upper spine while preserving freedom of movement, it soon revealed an additional benefit: greater head stability at high speeds, reducing fatigue and improving control.

Over time, the hump evolved beyond its original purpose, becoming a multifunctional platform capable of housing technologies such as hydration systems and D-air® sensors and control units.

A testament to the intrinsic connection between protection and performance.

Performance starts from within.

At the beginning of the 2000s, Dainese developed Procom: a sophisticated electronic measurement system designed to objectively evaluate the effectiveness of new technical solutions aimed at improving rider comfort.

Integrated directly into a racing suit, Procom embedded an extensive network of sensors to monitor humidity, temperature, heart rate, GPS position and altitude.

Data was recorded every five seconds and stored for detailed analysis through dedicated software, turning the suit into a real-time research platform.

The complexity of hand protection.

On a motorcycle, hands play an essential role. They connect the rider to the machine, translating every movement while constantly receiving feedback from the road.

At the same time, they are often the first point of contact with the ground during a crash, making them particularly vulnerable to injury.

This delicate balance between sensitivity and vulnerability makes glove design one of the most complex challenges in protective equipment.

Dainese began developing motorcycle gloves in the 1980s, with a major breakthrough in 1995: the Full Pro glove [slide 5], the first to introduce rigid carbon fiber and aramid inserts for protection against both abrasion and impact.

Each item preserved in the Archivio stands as a testament to Dainese’s ongoing research and innovation.

The suit of a King.

In 1998, Carl Fogarty claimed his third World Superbike Championship title, riding for the Ducati Performance team.

Known as “The King”, Fogarty defined an era of Superbike racing, becoming the most successful rider in WorldSBK history — a record that stood until 2018.

This AGV helmet was worn by Lino Dainese during his road trip across Europe, in 1968. A journey that would inspire the foundation of Dainese.
