META-MUSEUM is an EU-funded Horizon Europe Project that explores the impact of cultural heritage on people's emotions and understanding.

How can museums move beyond expert-driven narratives to foster truly inclusive communication? 🏛️🤝

As part of the Horizon Europe META-MUSEUM project, our latest research investigates the power of co-creation across European cultural institutions, including the Egyptian Museum of Turin, MuséoParc Alésia, and the Jamtli Museum. By actively involving visitors in interpretation and storytelling, we can build mutual trust, empathy, and meaningful connections with cultural heritage.

Take part in cutting-edge European research at the intersection of cultural heritage and cognitive science!

From September 7–12, 2026, the Alésia will host testing for the META-MUSEUM project, an initiative dedicated to exploring how cultural heritage can deeply engage and move the public on a personal level.

Researchers are investigating emotional responses to heritage exhibits using non-invasive brain sensors and skin conductance monitoring, paired with pre- and post-visit questionnaires.

The study is entirely safe, and the methodology is designed strictly for experiential research rather than clinical diagnosis.

How do visitors actually experience museums beyond what curators intend? 🏛️👀

Our latest research, conducted at the Egyptian Museum of Turin as part of the Horizon Europe META-MUSEUM project, combines mobile eye-tracking and co-creation activities to explore public behaviour and inclusive communication. The findings reveal how active visitor involvement bridges the gap between expert narratives and audience engagement, transforming passive viewers into active participants.

Did you know that emotions often outweigh logical factors when it comes to property investment? 🏠🧠

Our latest research, "Multimodal property video neuroanalytics," explores how real-time, multimodal big data can capture the emotional, affective, and physiological states of passers-by to better understand perceived investment value. By integrating this emotional dimension, we can create more inclusive and human-centric urban design.

The App That Knows What's in the Next Room 📱✨

Imagine walking through a museum and your phone seamlessly alerts you to a captivating story waiting just around the corner.

At BEIA Consult International, we are bringing this vision to life for the META-MUSEUM project with attaCHbox: a mobile application transforming traditional museum visits into dynamic, interactive experiences.

Our current development phase marks an exciting milestone. The working base of attaCHbox now offers two distinct ways to explore:
• Active Browsing: Visitors can directly browse curated museum activities.
• Proximity Discovery: Beacon-triggered technology surfaces nearby content automatically as visitors move from room to room.

Because cultural heritage must be accessible to everyone, we have also refreshed attaCHbox’s visual identity to include a specialised dyslexia-friendly accessibility mode.

Behind the scenes, we are maximising the project's digital footprint. We've optimised the META-MUSEUM website with a new homepage and are rolling out advanced SEO/GEO improvements to ensure this work is discoverable through traditional and AI-driven search engines.

Reflections from Brescia: Museum Diversity, Storytelling, and the Future of Heritage Education 🏛️✨

Last weekend, the European Museum Academy (EMA) jury met in Brescia to deliberate on this year’s candidates for our prestigious European museum awards: the Luigi Micheletti Award (for excellence in storytelling) and the DASA Award (for excellence in education).

While the highly anticipated winners will be officially revealed at the EMA Annual Award Ceremony and Conference in Alicante this September, our discussions sparked some fascinating insights into the current state of Europe's museum sector.

⏭️ What’s Next?
EMA members are taking these insights straight into the field! Next week, Elia Vlachou, René Capovin, and Henrik Zipsane will be testing the latest version of the TransforMEANS Theory Educational Module with an international cohort of Master’s students in Museum and Heritage Education.

EMA will be deploying this module across our summer schools in Cyprus, Slovenia, and Sweden.

We can't wait to see how these global students react as they uncover the true depth of museum impact on visitors.

Member Spotlight: Stephan Engelhard

We are pleased to introduce Stephan Engelhard, M.A., who leads education and mediation at the LVR-Archaeological Park Xanten. With a background in Classics and Archaeology from the University of Münster and the University of Nottingham, Stephan has dedicated his career to the field of museum education.

Stephan is a specialist in accessibility, focusing on the development of didactic materials and interactive programs that ensure archaeological research is open to a wide, diverse audience. His work is centered on removing barriers and fostering true participation for every visitor.

Stephan’s vision aligns perfectly with the META-MUSEUM mission:
"The interdisciplinary approach of the META-MUSEUM project emphasizes the audience’s needs, fosters inclusion and thereby increases cultural participation for as many people as possible."
His insight into inclusive communication is a cornerstone of our work in redefining the societal role of museums.

Holograms are often associated with large-scale installations, but they can come in many shapes and sizes – even portable versions that fit in the palm of your hand. ✨

At FSU Jena, we are exploring how simple and accessible holographic displays can bring cultural heritage closer to audiences, both inside and beyond museum spaces. Our compact holo-device is lightweight, portable, and ready to travel across Europe for META-MUSEUM, making it possible to share digital heritage in a wide range of settings.

The images show our device at the Digital Heritage Summit in Cyprus (26–30 May), where we tested several 3D models from 3DBigDataSpace that will soon reappear throughout the META-MUSEUM project.

Seeing these digital artefacts "floating" in space sparked valuable discussions about new ways of experiencing and engaging with heritage, connecting collections and digital and physical objects, and extending exhibitions beyond physical boundaries.
