Can science and the commercial fossil market coexist? 🦕✨

A new scientific paper published in Geology Today tackles one of the most debated topics in modern paleontology: the relationship between fossils, cultural heritage, legislation, and the international market.

Key takeaways:
• Legitimate trade and illegal trafficking are NOT the same. Recognizing and protecting legal, transparent trade is essential to combat illicit activity.
• Traceability is key. The authors propose standardizing documentation—including a 'geoforensic passport'—to track a fossil's origin and chain of custody.
• Collaboration works. The famous Big John Triceratops demonstrates how commercial preparation and academic research can go hand in hand, leading to new scientific discoveries and peer-reviewed publications.

Bridging the gap between scientific research and legal trade is not just possible—it is essential for safeguarding paleontological heritage worldwide. 🦖💡
