Stazione di inanellamento a scopo scientifico per il monitoraggio della migrazione.

La Sezione conduce studi sulla biodiversità e la biologia di conservazione della fauna nelle Alpi, offrendo il proprio sostegno scientifico alla PAT nella conservazione, gestione e valorizzazione del territorio, per uno sviluppo ecosostenibile del Trentino. Partecipa a progetti nazionali ed internazionali di ricerca in diversi ambiti dell’ecologia terrestre, realizza monitoraggi di specie d’interesse conservazionistico in ambito Rete Natura 2000, e sviluppa approcci analitici utili per una valutazione quantitativa delle dinamiche e dello stato di conservazione di popolazioni e comunità di Vertebrati. Mediante la curatela delle collezioni scientifiche, contribuisce alla raccolta di reperti utili alla documentazione storica e recente della fauna sulle Alpi. Tramite la propria attività di divulgazione ambientale, formazione e didattica contribuisce alla sensibilizzazione e valorizzazione della biodiversità in ambiente alpino. 🇮🇹 A poca distanza dalla fine della stagione (quest'anno l'impianto sarà smontato il 20 di ottobre), in una giornata da più di 700 uccelli inanellati, è finalmente arrivata la prima ricattura straniera della stagione!
L'anello che la femmina di lucherino (un giovane dell'anno) portava alla zampa aveva però un valore molto speciale, ben al di là di quello scientifico ornitologico, perché la scritta non lasciava dubbi rispetto alla provenienza dell'animale: Ucraina.🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Quel piccolo uc***lo che tenevano tra le mani portava con sé un grande messaggio di speranza: in qualche angolo di quel grande Paese dilaniato dalla guerra c'è qualcuno che non ha abbandonato il suo dovere di inanellatore e che ostinatamente, nelle tante difficoltà, prosegue il suo lavoro, affidando al vento le parole del grande poeta Khalil Gibran:

🏳️‍🌈 “Se ti sedessi su una nuvola non vedresti la linea di confine tra una nazione e l'altra, né la linea di divisione tra una fattoria e l'altra. Peccato che tu non possa sedere su una nuvola.”

🇬🇧 With the season coming to an end in just a few days (the ringing station will be dismantled on October 20th), on a day with over 700 birds ringed, we finally recorded our first foreign recapture of the season! However, the ring worn on the leg of this female Eurasian Siskin (a juvenile born this year) carried a very special value, far beyond its scientific importance. The inscription left no doubt about the bird's origin: Ukraine. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
That small bird held in our hands brought with it a powerful message of hope: somewhere in that vast, war-torn country, someone has not abandoned their duty as a bird ringer. Against all odds and through immense hardships, they stubbornly carry on their work, entrusting to the wind the words of the great poet Kahlil Gibran:

🏳️‍🌈 “Should you sit upon a cloud you would not see the boundary line between one country and another, nor the boundary stone between a farm and a farm. It is a pity you cannot sit upon a cloud.”

🇮🇹 Quella dei migratori di questi giorni è una palette di colori che si abbina perfettamente a quella del bosco autunnale: il giallo dei lucherini, l'arancione delle peppole, il rosso dei cardellini, il bruno dei tordi (sasselli compresi!), il verde muschio del groppone dei fringuelli.

Ed è proprio apprezzando le tinte del piumaggio dei nostri uccelli che ci siamo accorti di un fringuello "anomalo". Il suo piumaggio infatti si presentava più rossiccio dei suoi conspecifici. L'individuo era infatti affetto da una rara aberrazione cromatica, nota come "eritrismo" o "rutilismo".

La mutazione genetica alla base di questo fenomeno (da non confondere con l'isabellinismo) determina una sovrapproduzione di pigmenti rossi o rosa (carotenoidi o porfirine) che accumulandosi nel piumaggio conferiscono all'individuo una colorazione esageratamente rossiccia, se non addirittura violacea.

Che dire...il nostro fringuello si è dato un tocco decisamente autunnale!

🇬🇧 These days, the palette of migratory birds perfectly matches the autumn forest: the yellow of the Siskins, the orange of the Bramblings, the red of the Goldfinches, the brown of the thrushes (including Redwings!), and the moss-green rump of the Chaffinches.

It was while admiring these vibrant plumage colors that we noticed an unusual Chaffinch. Its plumage appeared distinctly redder than that of its conspecifics. The bird was, in fact, affected by a rare chromatic aberration known as "erythrism" (or "rutilism").

The genetic mutation behind this phenomenon (not to be confused with "isabellinism") leads to an overproduction of red or pink pigments—such as carotenoids or porphyrins—which accumulate in the feathers and give the individual an unusually reddish, or even purplish, appearance.

What can we say... our Chaffinch decided to embrace the full autumn look! 🍂🍁

🇮🇹 Passata la prima perturbazione di ottobre, il flusso dei migratori gregari (lucherini e fringuelli in particolare) prosegue con regolarità, facendo impennare i numeri degli inanellamenti. Tra le catture più affascinanti, ricordiamo un bellissimo maschio di zigolo muciatto, specie che nidifica sui versanti caldi e assolati delle Alpi, ma che in questa stagione compie erratismi e brevi spostamenti.

Terminati i controlli notturni alle reti, approfittiamo del buio per sperimentare il controllo di un altro fenomeno altrettanto stupefacente: la migrazione delle falene! Bastano poche ore di osservazione per sorprenderci del passaggio di questi animali e di quanto ancora poco conosciamo della natura che ci circonda!

🇬🇧 With the first October storm behind us, the movement of gregarious migrants (especially Eurasian Siskins and Common Chaffinches) continues steadily, driving ringing numbers right up! Among the most fascinating captures, a beautiful male Rock Bunting stands out—a species that breeds on the warm, sunny slopes of the Alps, but engages in nomadic wanderings and short-distance movements at this time of year.

With the night net rounds completed, we took advantage of the darkness to explore another equally astonishing phenomenon: moth migration! Just a few hours of observation were enough to amaze us at the passage of these creatures and remind us how much we still have to learn about the natural world around us!

🇮🇹 Le somme tirate alla fine di settembre ci portano a quasi 3.300 catture, la metà delle quali sono rappresentate da balie nere e pettirossi. Lucherini e fringuelli hanno già iniziato la rimonta, ricordandoci che, a dispetto di un'estate che non sembra più volerci lasciare, la migrazione autunnale è cominciata! A confermarlo, si aggiungono anche le primissime peppole della stagione e turdidi tipici del periodo. Le foto di oggi, ci insegnano che a volte l'apparenza inganna: riuscite a distinguere la femmina di verzellino da quella di lucherino? E la tordela? Sapreste riconoscerla nel terzetto di turdidi fotografato questa mattina? Trovi la risposta nei commenti!

🇬🇧 As September comes to a close, our totals reach nearly 3,300 captures, with European Pied Flycatchers and European Robins making up half of the count. Eurasian Siskins and Common Chaffinches are already gaining ground, reminding us that—despite a summer that seems reluctant to leave—autumn migration is well underway! Adding to the proof, the very first Bramblings of the season have arrived, alongside typical thrushes for this time of year.
Today's photos show us that appearances can be deceiving: can you spot the difference between the female European Serin and the female Eurasian Siskin? What about the Mistle Thrush? Can you identify it among the trio of thrushes photographed this morning?

🇮🇹 Le ultime notti della stagione (con i primi di ottobre, il monitoraggio interesserà solo le ore dall'alba al crepuscolo) ci ricompensano generosamente, regalandoci le prime catture di gufo comune e di civetta nana, che fino ad oggi avevamo considerato scomparsa dal valico. Durante il giorno, fatta eccezione per qualche trans-sahariano che si è attardato, la migrazione assume caratteri tipicamente autunnali, con fringuelli, lucherini, merli, tordi, pettirossi e anche qualche frosone.
Il controllo delle reti però a volte non basta per cogliere la ricchezza ornitologica di Bocca di Caset: molto più in alto, avvolte dalle nubi, le sagome di 4 grifoni si stagliano, alte e irraggiungibili.

🇬🇧 The final nights of the season (starting in early October, monitoring will be limited to daylight hours from dawn to dusk) have rewarded us generously, granting us our first captures of Long-eared Owl and Pygmy Owl—a species we feared had disappeared from the pass. During the day, apart from a few lingering trans-Saharan migrants, autumn migration is in full swing, featuring Chaffinches, Siskins, Blackbirds, Song Thrushes, Robins, and even a few Hawfinches.
However, checking the nets isn't always enough to capture the full ornithological richness of Bocca di Caset: high above, the silhouettes of four Griffon Vultures stand out against the clouds, soaring distant and unreachable.

🇮🇹 Mentre il tempo sul calendario scorre inesorabile, anche la migrazione ci ricorda che ormai l'autunno è ufficialmente iniziato! 🍂🍄🍁
In queste giornate arrivano le prime catture di lucherini e fringuelli, due specie di migratori gregari che ci accompagneranno per tutto il mese di ottobre. Insieme a loro, intercettiamo altri migratori a corto raggio come codibugnoli, tordi, regoli e passere scopaiole. Le catture si mantengono su buoni numeri anche per i transahariani, con qualche piacevole sorpresa: l'altro giorno, sul far della sera, 14 cutrettole vengono sorprese dalle nostre reti per poi essere prontamente rilasciate in gruppo verso la loro destinazione.

🇬🇧 As the calendar pages turn, bird migration reminds us that autumn has officially arrived, too! 🍂🍄🍁
These days we are seeing the first captures of Eurasian Siskins and Common Chaffinches—two gregarious migratory species that will be with us throughout the month of October. Alongside them, we are intercepting other short-distance migrants such as Long-tailed T**s, Song Thrushes, Goldcrests, and Dunnocks.
Capture numbers remain strong for trans-Saharan migrants as well, bringing a few pleasant surprises: last evening, at dusk, a flock of 14 Western Yellow Wagtails was caught in our nets, only to be promptly released together to continue their journey.

🇮🇹 Sotto il cielo terso di questi giorni, gli alberi attorno al valico cominciano a cambiare colore, ricordandoci che l'equinozio di autunno è ormai vicino. Trasportati dal vento, arrivano anche i primi richiami dei lucherini, la specie "Casettiana" per eccellenza, e persino qualche frosone! Non è però il giallo di questi uccelli a sorprenderci nelle reti...nel fine settimana catturiamo infatti anche un bel maschio di zigolo giallo, che lascia già intuire la bellezza del suo piumaggio primaverile. Specie che nidifica a terra, in ambienti aperti alternati a macchie d'arbusti, oggi non gode di un buono stato di conservazione, specialmente alle basse quote, ma i pascoli che si aprono attorno alla stazione offrono ancora un habitat idoneo.

🇬🇧 Under the clear skies of recent days, the trees around the pass are beginning to change color, reminding us that the autumn equinox is just around the corner. Carried by the wind, the first calls of Eurasian Siskins—a flag-species of our station—have arrived, along with even a few Hawfinches!
However, it wasn't the yellow of these birds that surprised us in the nets... over the weekend, we also captured a handsome male Yellowhammer, already hinting at the future beauty of its spring plumage.
A ground-nesting species that favors open habitats interspersed with patches of scrub, the Yellowhammer currently faces a poor conservation status, particularly at lower elevations. Fortunately, the pastures surrounding our station still provide a suitable habitat.

🇮🇹 In parte disturbato dalla perturbazione, il passaggio dei migratori diminuisce di intensità, concedendoci poche catture. Tra i migratori a lungo raggio ancora impegnati nel superamento delle Alpi, ritroviamo il codirosso comune, assiduo frequentatore dei nostri giardini, ma presente come nidificante fino alla Russia, il prispolone, tipico delle fasce ecotonali tra bosco e prato, e il beccafico, silvide dall'aspetto alquanto sobrio e dal carattere elusivo, che purtroppo non gode di un buono stato di conservazione. Tra i migratori a corto raggio, invece, non si notano avvisaglie che facciano presagire l'arrivo di specie irruttive (la cui migrazione è guidata dalla disponibilità di cibo), ma la stagione è ancora lunga...

🇬🇧 Partially disrupted by the bad weather, the passage of migrants has slowed down, yielding only a few captures. Among the long-distance migrants still tackling the Alpine crossing, we recorded the Common Redstart—a frequent visitor to our gardens that breeds as far east as Russia—the Tree Pipit, typical of the ecotones between forest and meadow, and the Garden Warbler, an understated and elusive sylviid warbler whose conservation status unfortunately remains a concern. As for short-distance migrants, there are no signs yet pointing to the arrival of irruptive species, but the season is far from over...

🇮🇹 A poco meno di un mese dall'inizio dell'attività, gli uccelli inanellati sono quasi 1.600. La specie più catturata è la balia nera (729 individui), che si conferma il migratore transahariano tipico della stazione, seguita dal luì grosso (142) e dal pettirosso (160), migratore a corto raggio, che ha già cominciato a transitare nella notte, segnale che l'autunno sta arrivando.
Tra i notturni, gli assioli sono ben 10, mentre la civetta nana non si è ancora fatta vedere: un segnale eloquente di come l'aumento delle temperature stia cambiando la distribuzione delle specie specialiste del freddo (per saperne di più: https://www.int-res.com/articles/cr2017/73/c073p207.pdf). Le specie locali più frequenti comprendono infine 93 cince more, 22 regoli, 22 tordi bottaccio.
Con mercoledì, una nuova perturbazione dovrebbe raggiungere il nostro valico, ma nell'attesa, la nostra attività prosegue senza sosta!

🇬🇧 Just under a month since the start of the season, almost 1,600 birds have been ringed. The most captured species is the Pied Flycatcher (729 individuals), confirming its status as the station's typical trans-Saharan migrant. It is followed by the Willow Warbler (142) and the European Robin (160)—a short-distance migrant that has already begun passing through at night, a clear sign that autumn is on its way.
Among nocturnal species, Eurasian Scops Owls reach an impressive total of 10, while the Eurasian Pygmy Owl has yet to make an appearance: a telltale sign of how rising temperatures are altering the distribution of cold-specialist species (read more here: https://www.int-res.com/articles/cr2017/73/c073p207.pdf). Finally, the most common resident species include 93 Coal T**s, 22 Goldcrests, and 22 Song Thrushes.
A new weather front is expected to reach our mountain pass by Wednesday, but in the meantime, our work continues nonstop!

🇮🇹 Dopo un mese di agosto segnato buoni numeri di catture, nei primi giorni di settembre registriamo una lieve inflessione nei movimenti sul valico, in parte dovuta alla fisiologica diminuzione dei migratori trans-sahariani, che in molti casi hanno già superato il picco della loro migrazione. Anche in questo caso però non sono mancate catture spettacolari: mentre la civetta nana resta un fantasma, le catture di assioli si alternano con quelle di civetta capogrosso. Notevoli sono stati anche i bellissimi maschi di ciuffolotto e culbianco, e una giovane averla piccola, per la prima volta alle prese con un viaggio migratorio che la porterà fino nell’Africa meridionale.

Nei prossimi giorni, le previsioni annunciano l’arrivo di una nuova perturbazione…chissà che insieme a un po’ di fresco non porti anche qualche sorpresa!

🇬🇧 After a month of August marked by good capture numbers, the first days of September show a slight dip in movement through the pass. This is partly due to the natural decrease in trans-Saharan migrants, many of which have already passed their peak migration. Even so, there was no shortage of spectacular captures: while the Eurasian pygmy owl remains an elusive phantom, Eurasian scops owl captures alternate with those of the Boreal owl. Equally remarkable were the stunning male bullfinches and northern wheatears, as well as a juvenile red-backed shrike embarking for the first time on a migratory journey that will take it all the way to southern Africa.
