On Saturday, September 19, Galleria 13 will host internationally renowned photographer Michael Kenna for an exclusive book signing of his latest publications. The event will open the exhibition Beautiful Fukushima. New Work by Michael Kenna, the first European stop of his new photographic project dedicated to the beauty of Fukushima Prefecture.

For the Fukushima project, two volumes have been produced, printed and published in Japan: In Fukushima, an elegant 64-page hardcover book, and Fukushima, a portfolio containing seven loose collotypes presented in a refined slipcase. The same publisher has also released two other Michael Kenna portfolios, one dedicated to Hokkaido and the other to the spiritual pilgrimage of Shikoku.
These are limited editions, meticulously produced down to the finest detail and intended for collectors, with their value further enhanced by the artist’s autograph signature.
Also available will be Constellation, published by Skira and created to celebrate Kenna’s 50-year career.

Sabato 19 settembre la Galleria 13 ospiterà il fotografo internazionale Michael Kenna per un esclusivo firmacopie delle sue più recenti pubblicazioni. L'evento aprirà la mostra "Beautiful Fukushima. New Work by Michael Kenna", prima tappa europea del suo nuovo progetto fotografico dedicato alle bellezze della prefettura di Fukushima.
Per il progetto Fukushima sono stati realizzati due volumi, stampati e pubblicati in Giappone: "In Fukushima", un elegante libro rilegato di 64 pagine, e "Fukushima", un portfolio contenente sette collotipie sciolte custodite in un raffinato cofanetto. Lo stesso editore ha inoltre pubblicato altri due portfolio di Michael Kenna, uno dedicato a Hokkaido e l'altro al percorso spirituale di Shikoku.
Sarà inoltre disponibile il volume Constellation, edito da Skira.

New Exhibition BEAUTIFUL FUKUSHIMA. New Works by Michael Kenna.

Galleria 13 is pleased to present the exhibition "BEAUTIFUL FUKUSHIMA. New works by Michael Kenna", at its exhibition space at Via Roma 34/b in Reggio Emilia, Italy, from September 19 to October 17, 2026. The exhibition features a selection of the most representative photographs from Michael Kenna’s new photographic project, dedicated to Fukushima Prefecture in Japan.

On the occasion of the exhibition opening, on Saturday, September 19 at 11:00 a.m., Michael Kenna will be present for a conversation with italian curator Sandro Parmiggiani, followed by an exclusive book signing dedicated to his most recent publications. The event will take place at the Ex-Aci venue at Via Secchi 11, near to Galleria 13.

In everyone’s memory, whether consciously or not, remains the recollection of the Fukushima nuclear disaster fifteen years ago. With the aim of helping to improve Fukushima’s image around the world, Michael Kenna was invited by the Fukushima Prefecture to undertake a photographic project that would showcase and do justice to the natural beauty of the area. A region of Japan so beautiful and so rich in history cannot be associated with a single catastrophic event.

La Galleria 13 è lieta di presentare la mostra *Beautiful Fukushima. New works by Michael Kenna*, nella sua sala espositiva in Via Roma 34/b a Reggio Emilia, Italia, dal 19 settembre al 17 ottobre 2026. La mostra comprende una selezione degli scatti più rappresentativi del nuovo progetto fotografico di Michael Kenna, dedicato alla prefettura di Fukushima in Giappone.
In occasione dell'inaugurazione della mostra, sabato 19 settembre alle ore 11:00, Michael Kenna sarà presente per una conversazione con il curatore Sandro Parmigiani e a seguire per un esclusivo firmacopie dedicato alle sue più recenti pubblicazioni. Yayoi Kusama has died. Farewell to the “Queen of Polka Dots,” who revolutionized art in her quest for infinity.

She died at the age of 97. Yayoi Kusama was one of the most renowned names in contemporary Japanese art. In the later years of her life, thanks in part to a number of successful collaborations with the fashion world and major retrospectives around the globe, she had become almost a symbol of pop culture.

Her large-scale works, obsessively covered with dots or other repeated elements, have become iconic and have commanded extremely high prices. In the statement announcing her death, which occurred on August 14 in Tokyo, the museum dedicated to her highlighted her role as a “pioneer of the artistic avant-garde, whose creative practice has encompassed visual art, performance, fantasy and poetry,” seeking to restore depth and substance to an artistic career that, paradoxically, because of the immense success she enjoyed in recent decades, had ultimately become closely associated with her own distinctive decorative motifs.

È morta a 97 anni l’artista Yayoi Kusama, tra i nomi più noti dell’arte contemporanea nipponica, che negli ultimi anni della sua vita, anche grazie ad alcune fortunate collaborazioni con il mondo della moda e a grandi retrospettive in tutto il mondo, era diventata quasi un simbolo del pop. Le sue opere di grandi dimensioni, ricoperte ossessivamente di puntini o di altri elementi ripetuti in serie, sono diventate di culto e hanno raggiunto altissime quotazioni. Nel messaggio con cui il museo a lei dedicato ne ha comunicato il decesso (avvenuto il 14 agosto, a Tokyo) si sottolinea il suo ruolo di “pioniera dell’avanguardia artistica, la cui pratica creativa ha incluso l’arte visiva, le performance, la fantasia e la poesia”.

Bellissimo dipinto ad olio dell'artista italiano Alberto Manfredi, ricco di figure e dettagli, proveniente da collezione privata. Il quadro raffigura 4 modelle nello studio dell'artista con la sua riconoscibilissima e unica scomposizione della figura e i toni caldi del colore. Nella rappresentazione tutti gli elementi caratteristici dell'ambientazione in studio: il tavolino rotondo in primo piano con sopra una lettera e un bicchiere di vino, sul fondo la tenda e lo scuro della finestra.

A beautiful oil painting by the Italian artist Alberto Manfredi, rich in figures and detail, from a private collection. The painting depicts four models in the artist’s studio, rendered in his highly recognisable and unique style of figure composition and warm colour tones. The painting captures all the characteristic elements of the studio setting: the small round table in the foreground with a letter and a glass of w**e on it, and in the background the curtain and the window shutters.

A beautiful and intense painting by the Italian artist Omar Galliani, part of the *Nuovi Fiori* series.
In his works, Galliani employs an extremely refined Renaissance technique, characterised by the precision of his pencil strokes. The starting point for his work is the white, bright surface of the sheet of paper, the canvas, or – more often – the poplar panel, upon which he traces marks with pencil or charcoal that build up until they take on a tangible life of their own. The board is not prepared in the traditional way (such as with chalk). Instead, it is sanded to bring out the natural grain of the poplar, which blends in with the design. The pencil marks are continuously layered, either by hand or with the palm of the hand. In this way, Galliani achieves a misty, Leonardo-esque shading and intense shadows, which contrast with the natural light of the wood. In his works, Galliani predominantly favours black and white, but he also uses red or blue pencils, known as ‘sanguigne’ in the Italian Renaissance. Finally, the drawings are often embellished with monochrome touches, such as symbols in red (Chinese ink or pastel) or details in ultramarine blue.

Un dipinto bellissimo e intenso dell'artista italiano Omar Galliani, appartenente alla serie *Nuovi Fiori*.
Nelle sue tavole Galliani utilizza una finissima tecnica rinascimentale, caratterizzata dall’accuratezza del tratto della matita. Il punto di partenza della sua opera è la superficie bianca, chiara, del foglio, della tela, o più spesso della tavola di pioppo, su cui traccia segni con matita o carboncino che si accumulano fino a prendere matericamente vita.
La tavola non subisce una preparazione classica (come il gesso). Viene invece trattata con carta vetrata per far emergere le venature naturali del pioppo, che si integrano con il disegno.
I segni di matita vengono sovrapposti continuamente a mano nuda o con il palmo. In questo modo Galliani ottiene uno sfumato leonardesco va****so e ombre intense, in contrasto con la luce naturale del legno.
Nelle sue composizioni Galliani predilige prevalentemente il bianco e nero, ma utilizza anche matite rosse o blu, chiamate "sanguigne" nel rinascimento italiano. Le tavole infine sono spesso impreziosite da tocchi monocromatici, come simboli in rosso (inchiostro cinese o pastello) o dettagli in blu oltremare.

A luminous trail of fireflies guides visitors through the solo exhibition dedicated to Japanese photographer Kazuaki Koseki, via a wide selection of works that offers a comprehensive view of the *Summer Fairies* series.
The vibrant colors of the untouched nature of the forests of Yamagata emerge from the prints, enhanced by the luminescence of handmade Ise-washi paper, whose metallic reflections cause the works to shimmer and the leaves to glow with every subtle movement. The round, golden lights of the fireflies drift through the undergrowth, dance around a tree, seem to rise toward the star-filled sky, or dart frenetically in swift battles beneath the Shinto remnants of abandoned temples.

Una scia luminosa di lucciole accompagna il visitatore nella mostra personale dedicata al fotografo giapponese Kazuaki koseki, attraverso l'ampia selezione di opere che permettono di dare uno sguardo completo sulla serie Summer Fairies.
I vibranti colori della natura incontaminata delle foreste di Yamagata emergono dalle stampe anche grazie alla luminescenza della carta Ise-washi, realizzata a mano, che conferisce riflessi metallici alle opere e fa brillare le foglie di bagliori ad ogni piccolo movimento. I bagliori rotondi e gialli delle lucciole galleggiano nel sottobosco, danzano attorno ad un albero, sembrano librarsi fino a raggiungere il cielo stellato o schizzano velocissime in una battaglia frenetica sotto le vestigia shintoiste di templi abbandonati.contemporaryart

Galleria 13 is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition “Summer Fairies,” dedicated to contemporary Japanese photographer Kazuaki Koseki, presented as part of the off-program of the European Photography Festival 2026.

Fotografia Europea is an international cultural festival dedicated to contemporary photography. Founded in 2006, it is promoted by Fondazione Palazzo Magnani and the Municipality of Reggio Emilia.
Its starting point is photography as a tool to reflect on the complexities of contemporary life, following the legacy of Reggio Emilia–born photographer Luigi Ghirri, a leading figure in the renewal of photography in the late 20th century, whose archive is preserved in the city.

The festival takes place across multiple venues throughout the city—public and private, formal and informal—and is built around a central core of exhibitions, including newly commissioned projects dedicated to a specific theme selected each year by the scientific committee. Alongside the exhibitions, there is a rich program of events, conferences, screenings, workshops, portfolio reviews, and site-specific performances.

The program is further enriched by the OFF circuit: a series of exhibitions and events spread across the territory and independently promoted by galleries, associations, public institutions, and private organizations.
