Yayoi Kusama has died. Farewell to the “Queen of Polka Dots,” who revolutionized art in her quest for infinity.
She died at the age of 97. Yayoi Kusama was one of the most renowned names in contemporary Japanese art. In the later years of her life, thanks in part to a number of successful collaborations with the fashion world and major retrospectives around the globe, she had become almost a symbol of pop culture.
Her large-scale works, obsessively covered with dots or other repeated elements, have become iconic and have commanded extremely high prices. In the statement announcing her death, which occurred on August 14 in Tokyo, the museum dedicated to her highlighted her role as a “pioneer of the artistic avant-garde, whose creative practice has encompassed visual art, performance, fantasy and poetry,” seeking to restore depth and substance to an artistic career that, paradoxically, because of the immense success she enjoyed in recent decades, had ultimately become closely associated with her own distinctive decorative motifs.

Le sue opere di grandi dimensioni, ricoperte ossessivamente di puntini o di altri elementi ripetuti in serie, sono diventate di culto e hanno raggiunto altissime quotazioni. Nel messaggio con cui il museo a lei dedicato ne ha comunicato il decesso (avvenuto il 14 agosto, a Tokyo) si sottolinea il suo ruolo di “pioniera dell’avanguardia artistica, la cui pratica creativa ha incluso l’arte visiva, le performance, la fantasia e la poesia”.
