Il titolo della mostra è preso in prestito da una poesia di Betty Danon inclusa nel libro d’artista “Poesie nel quadrato, pubblicato nel 1973.

I lavori degli artisti si posizionano perfettamente nel tempo presente, trascendendo però la realtà oggettuale.

The exhibition title is borrowed from a poem by Betty Danon, featured in her 1973 artist’s book “Poesie nel quadrato” [Poems in the Square].

The artists’ works are firmly anchored in the present, yet they transcend objecthood.

Nell’ultima sala ci si imbatte in una costellazione di “Ossessioni”, disegni di piccole dimensioni che si distribuiscono irregolarmente nello spazio. Sono figure e forme rese con un tratto veloce, che si direbbe fuori controllo. L’istinto ha il sopravvento sull’ordine, e crea un universo libero e trasgressivo. Il segno si presenta come uno scarabocchio confermando che questa pratica può essere totalmente autonoma rispetto al disegno, perché si allontana dall’errore in quanto è il frutto di una precisa volontà.

In the final room, one encounters a constellation of “Ossessioni” [Obsessions], small-scale drawings distributed irregularly throughout the space. These are figures and forms rendered with a swift, seemingly uncontrolled stroke. Instinct prevails over order, creating a free and transgressive universe. The mark presents itself as a scribble, confirming that this practice can be entirely autonomous from drawing; it distances itself from the notion of “error,” as it is the result of a precise will.

“If words are to be sounded” è una mostra collettiva nata da una collaborazione internazionale tra CAP • Centre d’art de Saint-Fons, Le 19, Crac Montbéliard e GAK Bremen, che esplora il linguaggio come spazio di tensione, trasformazione e relazione.

Tra gli artisti invitati, Shadi Harouni sviluppa una pratica che intreccia memoria, voce, paesaggio e narrazione collettiva, aprendo nuove possibilità di ascolto e di presenza. In dialogo con l’eredità di Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, le opere in mostra interrogano ciò che rimane quando il linguaggio vacilla e le parole non bastano più a costruire un mondo comune.

Attraverso poesia, immagine e performance, “If words are to be sounded” immagina altre forme di connessione, fragili e profondamente politiche.

“If words are to be sounded” is a group exhibition born from an international collaboration between CAP • Centre d’art de Saint-Fons, Le 19, Crac Montbéliard and GAK Bremen, exploring language as a space of tension, transformation, and exchange.

Within the exhibition, Shadi Harouni brings forward a practice rooted in memory, voice, landscape, and collective storytelling, opening alternative forms of listening and presence. In dialogue with the legacy of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, the exhibition reflects on what remains when language falters and words are no longer enough to sustain a shared reality.

Through poetry, image, and performance, “If words are to be sounded” creates openings toward other ways of relating, listening, and imagining value together.

In occasione del Gallery Weekend sarà visitabile “La notte” di Luca Gioacchino Di Bernardo: una mostra densa di personaggi che popolano un universo surreale, privo di riferimenti spazio - temporali. Solo figure, quindi, in cui l’umano e l’animale si mescolano e si confondono.

On the occasion of the Gallery Weekend, “La notte” by Luca Gioacchino Di Bernardo will be on view: an exhibition dense with characters inhabiting a surreal universe, devoid of spatial or temporal references. It is a world of figures alone, where the human and the animal mingle and blur.

Siamo lieti di annunciare l’inaugurazione di “Speaking After the Body”, oggi 19 maggio alle ore 18:30 presso la Sala Veruda a Trieste. La mostra, a cura di Lorenzo Lazzari e promossa da Adriatico Book Club ETS, segna il debutto di “Dissent Series”, un programma espositivo internazionale dedicato al rapporto tra arte e dissenso.

Tra gli artisti protagonisti, Shadi Harouni presenta “Sunken Garden: Beheshte Zahra Cemetery, Section 33” (2018), un lavoro fotografico dedicato alle tombe di venticinque dissidenti iraniani giustiziati dal regime Pahlavi e successivamente ricoperte di cemento dopo la Rivoluzione del 1979. Nonostante quel cimitero resti uno spazio di repressione e sorveglianza, alcune di queste tombe mostrano il passaggio di piccoli gesti di cura, una lieve pulizia della superficie e la posa di alcuni fiori secchi. La documentazione fotografica di Harouni fissa ciò che non deve essere osservato ed evidenzia come questi tumuli senza nome portino con sé la forza della lotta nella memoria di coloro che, sfidando la legge, se ne
prendono cura.
We are glad to announce the opening of “Speaking After the Body” today, 19 May at 6:30 PM at Sala Veruda in Trieste. Curated by Lorenzo Lazzari and promoted by Adriatico Book Club ETS, the exhibition marks the debut of “Dissent Series”, an international exhibition program exploring the relationship between art and dissent.

Among the featured artists, Shadi Harouni presents “Sunken Garden: Beheshte Zahra Cemetery, Section 33” (2018), a photographic work portraying the graves of twenty-five Iranian dissidents executed under the Pahlavi regime and later covered in concrete after the 1979 Revolution. Despite that cemetery remaining a space of repression and surveillance, some of these graves bear witness to small acts of care, a light cleaning of the surface and the offering of some dried flowers. Harouni’s photographic documentation fixes what is not meant to be observed, emphasizing how these nameless burial mounds carry the power of resistance within the memory of those who, defying the law, take care of them.

The detail of his linework is meticulous but chaotic. The lightness of his line contrasts with the density of information that is piled up in each of his drawings, generating micro and macro worlds that are all to be observed and investigated.

“Il pittore” è un insieme di suggestioni in cui figure antropomorfe si collocano in una dimensione irreale, sublimata dal tratto affascinante e meticoloso. Il pittore è la condizione attuale dell’artista: egli naturalmente partecipa - col suo sentire - alle vicende del mondo. Eppure, di questo bagaglio, restituisce sempre un misero frammento, poiché un ritratto integrale risulterebbe indigesto agli avventori che serve come un cameriere. La scena ha un rimando al racconto classico di Atteone e Diana.

“Il pittore” [The Painter], is a collection of impressions in which anthropomorphic figures are placed within an unreal dimension, sublimated by a fascinating and meticulous stroke. Il pittore represents the artist’s current condition: he naturally participates—through his own sensibility—in the world’s events. Yet, from this wealth of experience, he only ever renders a meager fragment, as a complete portrait would prove indigestible to the patrons he serves like a waiter. The scene contains a reference to the classical myth of Actaeon and Diana.

“Watching things burn”, china su tela, è la rappresentazione malinconica di un essere a sei dita con un corpo emaciato dal tempo e il volto animalesco e ieratico, che giace seduto a terra appoggiandosi a un cane. Lo sguardo di entrambi si perde altrove e l’elemento narrativo del titolo li colloca in una situazione estrema: i due stanno guardando le cose bruciare e la loro reazione non è di paura, ma di rassegnazione.

“Watching things burn”, ink on canvas, is the melancholy depiction of a six-fingered being with a body emaciated by time and a hieratic, animalistic face, sitting on the ground leaning against a dog. Both of their gazes are lost elsewhere, and the narrative element of the title places them in an extreme situation: they are watching things burn, yet their reaction is not one of fear, but of resignation.

Il progetto espositivo si apre con la serie Sottobosco. In natura il sottobosco è la parte dell’ambiente boschivo che si sviluppa all’ombra degli alberi ed è spesso popolato da animali. E sono proprio questi ultimi che l’artista ritrae. Nei ritratti di animali che Di Bernardo disegna il confine tra umano e animale è incerto. Nei soggetti rappresentati non c’è nulla di selvaggio né brutale, perché la volpe, l’avvoltoio, il cinghiale sono il riflesso dell’umanità contemporanea, creature teriomorfe che inteneriscono per i loro sguardi languidi e al contempo sorprendono per la loro natura ambigua e talvolta seducente.

The exhibition project begins with the series Sottobosco [Undergrowth]. In nature, the undergrowth is the part of the forest environment that thrives in the shadow of the trees, often populated by animals. It is precisely these creatures that the artist portrays. In the animal portraits drawn by Di Bernardo, the boundary between human and animal is uncertain. There is nothing wild or brutal in the subjects represented; instead, the fox, the vulture, and the wild boar serve as reflections of contemporary humanity—theriomorphic creatures that evoke tenderness through their languid gazes, while simultaneously surprising the viewer with their ambiguous and sometimes seductive nature.
