The horizon is an invisible line, yet one that is always present. It separates the earth from the sky, but it can also connect vision to imagination, a visual language to oneiric projection, the identity of the individual to alterity. The artists involved, each one with a distinct and personal expressive code, explore the horizon as a multifaceted threshold: a geographical boundary, a symbolic and liminal space, a distance between self and other, a point of tension between what is known and what lies elsewhere, between what we can reach and what remains distant, geographically, emotionally, or culturally.

Ncontemporary and Alessandro Casciaro Venice are pleased to present Insurgent bodies, an exhibition dedicated to Lisetta Carmi and Jürgen Klauke, two leading figures in European photography who, through distinct yet equally radical paths, have explored the themes of identity, the body, and social representation. The exhibition will be accompanied by a curatorial text by Anna Daneri.

The show includes a selection of works by Lisetta Carmi (Genoa, 1924 – Cisternino, 2022) from the series I travestiti (1965–1971), one of the most significant bodies of work in twentieth-century Italian photography. Her gaze, free from hypocrisy and moralism, delves into the profound humanity that emanates from the bodies and expressions of a segment of society long neglected, repressed, and marginalized. First published in 1972, the volume I travestiti is today regarded as a seminal work not only within Italian photography but also in the broader history of gender representation, for its ability to merge social testimony and aesthetic power, restoring dignity and authenticity to lives marked by the search for freedom and recognition. At a time when society struggled to accept difference and nonconforming identities, Carmi broke the silence, giving visibility to those excluded from public discourse. Her work combines the force of social documentation with an artistic sensitivity capable of revealing the most intimate and universal dimensions of human experience.

Alongside this empathetic and documentary vision, the exhibition presents the work of Jürgen Klauke (Cochem, 1943), a German artist who, since the 1970s, has made his own body a privileged site of inquiry and experimentation. Through photographs and performative sequences, Klauke has explored the realms of sexual ambiguity, disguise, and the construction of identity, using staging as a critical and subversive tool. His language—both ironic and unsettling—challenges conventional boundaries between the masculine and the feminine, the natural and the artificial, the social and the intimate.

For its latest women FW 2026 collection Louis Vuitton and its artistic director Nicholas Ghesquiere collaborated with Nazar Strelyaev-Nazarko. Two of the artist's paintings from 2023 became the protagonists of the collection presented officially at the Louvre Paris in March 2026.

Nazar Strelyaev-Nazarko was born in Ukraine in 1998, he now lives in Milan. In his work, the artist weaves together personal memory, political history, and the tradition of painting.

Ncontemporary is proud to have presented a solo show of the artist at its Venice gallery in 2024. We will soon be presenting a selection of new works by the artist at Miart 2026 in April and then in a new solo show at Ncontemporary Milan, opening June 2026.

March-April 2026

Ncontemporary Venice is preparing the Venice Gallery Weekend, taking place on 27-29 March. For that occasion, we are thrilled to inaugurate “Insurgent bodies”, a show with works by Lisetta Carmi and Jürgen Klauke, two leading figures in European photography who, through distinct yet equally radical paths, have explored the themes of identity, body, and social representation. The exhibition will be accompanied by a curatorial text by Anna Daneri and is organised in partnership with Alessandro Casciaro.

The ongoing shows at Ncontemporary Milan of Davide Monaldi and Chiara Baima Poma will continue until 28 March. After that the Milan gallery will open on the 13 of April a show titled “When the sun sets”, with works by Marion Baruch, EX., Aldo Mondino, Vasilis Papageorgiou, Neil Raitt, Maria D. Rapicavoli and Santiago Reyes Villaveces. The exhibition is curated by Erica Massaccesi.

During the Milan Art Week, Ncontemporary is glad to return to Miart with works by Ruth Beraha, Jonny Briggs, Giulia Maiorano, Anila Rubiku and Nazar Strelyaev-Nazarko. At the same time the gallery is supporting “Hues of delicacy”, a new site-specific project conceived by Anila Rubiku for Zaza Ramen Milan, opening on the 14 of April, with a curatorial text by Irene Sofia Comi.

Ruben Brulat presented at two new dyptichs from the series Corps Traversees (2019-2026).

These self-portraits are all taken in solitude in vulcanic environments. Printed in 20x25cm formats, the photos are then framed in plaster, to become unique sculptural objects.
