I’m not writing a typical review of a place. Rather, I want to share the emotions this museum inspired in me.
One of the most important things in life is being driven by an idea — choosing a path and dedicating yourself to a goal, pursuing it with passion and unwavering commitment. This museum is a remarkable example of that.
For more than 30 years, a husband and wife who have spent the last 50 years living in Matera have been passionately building an extraordinary ethnographic collection from the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection is housed in the cave apartments of Matera’s historic old town.
The care with which every item has been selected, grouped, displayed, and catalogued is truly astonishing. It reflects not only knowledge and dedication, but also genuine love for the history and traditions of this region.
What makes this even more remarkable is that this is a private initiative, sustained by the enthusiasm and commitment of a family that is far from wealthy, and accomplished without any support from the municipality or the state. In my opinion, preserving the history of a city and an entire region is something that deserves far greater recognition and assistance from public institutions.
I sincerely wish good health and many more years to Signor Donato Cascione and Signora Barbara Eramo. May they continue their invaluable work and make an even greater contribution to the cultural heritage of Italy and the world.
I highly recommend visiting this small museum and taking the time to speak with Signor Donato and Signora Barbara. Their passion, dedication, and generosity are as inspiring as the collection itself.
If this review is ever read by anyone involved in Italy’s cultural institutions or public heritage organizations, I would like to make a heartfelt appeal: please formally recognize the extraordinary contribution of the Cascione family — and especially Signor Donato — to the preservation of the history, traditions, and cultural heritage of Matera and Southern Italy. Such dedication deserves national recognition and appreciation.
And if possible, please also consider providing financial support to help preserve and expand this remarkable collection for future generations.
What has been accomplished here through decades of dedication, sacrifice, and passion deserves not only the admiration of visitors, but also the recognition of the nation.
