On March 20, 2020, the fourth day of lockdown in France, Philippe Hérard—who had set himself the rule of painting one cardboard piece per day—created Jour 4.
A striking work, almost Vermeer-like in its restraint, where the act of creating from emptiness takes on a deeply symbolic dimension in that moment of isolation. A few shadows, delicate touches of light, and a single chromatic presence—the yellow of the paddle—are enough to bring the image into being. Everything else—the skin of this melancholic back, the slightly dusty air that surrounds it—is nothing more than the support itself: cardboard.
Six years later, we present a silkscreen reproduction of Jour 4, printed directly onto corrugated cardboard selected for its affinity with the original. Produced in four passes and enhanced by UV printing techniques, this edition reaches an extraordinary level of artisanal quality.
The reproduction of Jour 4 results from the integration of traditional silkscreen printing and UV digital printing on corrugated cardboard. A careful study of color separation, combined with a multi-stage printing process, has made it possible to achieve maximum fidelity to the original work, restoring its depth, intensity, and precision of detail. The use of UV technology also allows for the preservation and enhancement of key features of the image on a surface that is both irregular and technically demanding.
