From the Zeffirelli Archive

A crossing to Ischia in the 1950s. On board the ferry are Franco Zeffirelli, Luchino Visconti, Elsa Morante, Uberta Visconti, Franco Mannino, and Uberta’s son.

A candid photograph bringing together some of the leading figures of 20th-century Italian culture, capturing a private moment while revealing the rich network of artistic and personal relationships from which remarkable works of theatre, cinema, and music emerged.

Through its ongoing digitization work, the Zeffirelli Archive continues to bring to light images like this one—valuable witnesses to more than seventy years of performing arts history.

Grazie al lavoro di digitalizzazione, l'Archivio Zeffirelli continua a restituire immagini come questa, preziose testimonianze di oltre settant'anni di storia dello spettacolo.

La Fondazione Zeffirelli è lieta di partecipare al FLO.RE Festival 2026 ospitando quattro appuntamenti dedicati al tema dell’acqua, protagonista dell’edizione di quest’anno.

Dal 5 al 27 giugno, concerti e incontri animeranno gli spazi della Fondazione attraverso un percorso che unisce musica, memoria, cinema e ricerca artistica. Dal concerto inaugurale del Duo Fossi–Masi all’omaggio a Danilo Donati e Federico Fellini, fino alle sonorità del Trio DeMoNe e del Les Brasseurs Quintet, ogni appuntamento offrirà al pubblico nuove prospettive di ascolto e approfondimento.

Un’occasione per vivere la Fondazione Zeffirelli come luogo di dialogo tra le arti e di incontro con la grande tradizione culturale contemporanea.

C’era già un clown capace di raccontare la parte più oscura dell’animo umano.

Con Pagliacci di Ruggero Leoncavallo, Franco Zeffirelli ha attraversato oltre cinquant’anni di teatro lirico, reinventando più volte uno dei capolavori più intensi del repertorio italiano.

Dal Covent Garden al Metropolitan Opera di New York, fino all’Opera di Roma, Zeffirelli trasforma il dramma verista in qualcosa di sempre attuale: una storia di gelosia, violenza e confini sottili tra finzione e realtà.

Nel Museo Zeffirelli e nell’Archivio sono custoditi bozzetti, modellini, fotografie e costumi che raccontano l’evoluzione della sua visione scenica.

With Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo, Franco Zeffirelli spent over fifty years reimagining one of the most powerful masterpieces of Italian opera.

From Covent Garden to the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Rome Opera House, Zeffirelli transformed this verismo drama into something timeless: a story of jealousy, violence, and the fragile boundary between performance and reality.

Sketches, stage models, photographs, and costumes preserved in the Zeffirelli Museum and Archive reveal the evolution of his theatrical vision.

In the Screening Room of the Zeffirelli Museum, cinema comes to life once again in an immersive setting.

On the large screen, scenes from Romeo and Juliet (1968) unfold: a glance, an encounter, a fleeting moment that continues to move generations of viewers.

A visit to the museum is also this: stepping inside Franco Zeffirelli’s works and being surrounded by the power of his imagery, where theatre, opera, and cinema come together.

A newly digitized set photograph from the Zeffirelli Archive brings back a moment from the filming of Brother Sun, Sister Moon (1972): at the center, Franco Zeffirelli alongside Graham Faulkner and Judi Bowker, who portrayed Francis and Clare.

Loosely inspired by the life of Saint Francis, the film won the David di Donatello Award for Franco Zeffirelli’s direction and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction, becoming part of international cinema history.

Every day, the preservation and digitization work carried out by the Zeffirelli Archive brings back to light images, documents, and memories that continue to preserve an essential heritage of 20th-century performing arts and cinema.

Liberamente ispirato alla vita di San Francesco, il film vinse il David di Donatello per la regia di Franco Zeffirelli e ottenne una candidatura all’Oscar per la scenografia, entrando nella storia del cinema internazionale.

Ogni giorno il lavoro di conservazione e digitalizzazione dell’Archivio Zeffirelli restituisce immagini, documenti e memorie che continuano a raccontare un patrimonio fondamentale dello spettacolo del Novecento.

Every day, the Zeffirelli Museum in Florence welcomes visitors of all ages: children, students, families, and adults exploring the museum’s galleries to discover the world of performance through stage designs, costumes, sketches, and archival memories.

Guided tours transform the museum experience into a journey behind the scenes of theatre, cinema, and opera, bringing different generations closer to Franco Zeffirelli’s creative universe.

The Zeffirelli Foundation is pleased to host, over the coming weeks, the curricular workshop in Theatre Studies of the DAMS degree course at the University of Florence, chaired by Professor Caterina Pagnini.

The workshop is led by Maria Alberti, Head of Education at the Zeffirelli Foundation, together with David Piazzesi, Head Librarian of the Foundation’s Library.
Students will take part in the cataloguing of newly donated collections for the Foundation’s Library of Performing Arts, working directly with key texts and materials that support research into the history of theatre, cinema, and music.

1949. Rehearsals for Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida, directed by Luchino Visconti, are underway in Florence’s Boboli Gardens.

Seated on the steps built for the production, far right, a young Franco Zeffirelli watches the scene alongside Luchino Visconti and Pariso Votto, superintendent of Florence’s Teatro Comunale.

Following the success of A Streetcar Named Desire, Zeffirelli also designed the sets for what would become a legendary production — “an open-air colossal” that left a lasting mark on the history of Italian theatre for the sheer scale of its stage (over 100 meters long) and for bringing together some of Italy’s greatest actors, alongside young performers who would soon become stars of Italian cinema and theatre: Mastroianni, De Lullo, Albertazzi…

Preserved in the Foundation’s archive, this photograph holds not only a working moment, but the living memory of an extraordinary and unrepeatable season in Italian performing arts.

1949. Nel Giardino di Boboli a Firenze si stanno svolgendo le prove di Troilo e Cressida di Shakespeare con la regia di Luchino Visconti.

Sulle gradinate costruite per lo spettacolo, ultimo a destra, un giovane Franco Zeffirelli osserva la scena accanto a Luchino Visconti e al sovrintendente Pariso Votto, sovrintendente del Teatro Comunale di Fienze.

Dopo il successo di "Un Tram che si chiama desiderio", Zeffirelli firma infatti anche le scene di quello che sarebbe diventato uno spettacolo leggendario, “un colossal all’aperto” destinato a lasciare un segno nella storia del teatro italiano.. per la maestosità del paloscenico (oltre 100 metri) e per la partecipazione dei maggiori attori italiani del momento e dei giovani che a breve sarebbero divantati le stelle del cinema e del teatro italiano: Mastroianni, De Lullo, Albertazzi...

Questa fotografia custodita nell’archivio della Fondazione conserva non solo un momento di lavoro, ma la memoria viva di una stagione irripetibile dello spettacolo italiano.

Between the debut of Antony and Cleopatra in 1967 and the monumental Aida of 2002, Franco Zeffirelli continued to develop his scenic research.

The “horizontal rods”, first introduced at the Metropolitan Opera, gradually became one of the defining elements of his theatrical language.

From Don Giovanni at the Staatsoper in 1972 to Turandot in 1983, these scenic structures evolved, expanded, and acquired new visual and dramatic functions.

A visual language that grew from production to production while always retaining Zeffirelli’s unmistakable scenic signature.
