Nella serie "Nos visages", Nidhal Chamekh ha attinto agli articoli de Le Miroir, una rivista francese di propaganda coloniale fondata nel 1910. Proprio lì i “fanti” senegalesi e berberi venivano rappresentati a metà tra l’indagine etnografica e l’immagine coloniale e orientalista ormai stereotipata. L’artista duplica questi volti e li sottrae a un sistema di rappresentazione coercitiva, per inserirli in un’altra temporalità: quella che consiste nel riallacciare il legame – sotto strati di destini sacrificati – con i “vinti della vittoria”. Volti che contribuirono alla liberazione della Francia, ma che rimasero per sempre ai margini della sua narrazione ufficiale e di una guerra che si definiva “mondiale”, quando il vero teatro del conflitto riguardava gli imperi coloniali europei.

For the series Nos visages, Nidhal Chamekh has drawn on articles of Le Miroir, a French colonial propaganda magazine founded in 1910, where Senegalese and Berber “infantrymen” were presented somewhere between the ethnographical survey and the hackneyed colonial-orientalist image. The artist duplicates these faces, and tears them out of a system of coercive representation, in order to incorporate them in another time-frame: the one consisting in linking back up – beneath layers of sacrificed fates – with the “losers of the victory”. These faces which contributed to the liberation of France, but remained forever on the sidelines of its official narrative and a war calling itself a “world” war, when the real theatre had to do with the European colonial empires.
