Nella serie “Frictions” Nidhal Chamekh crea delle composizioni che contengono elementi scultorei greco-romani e “maschere” africane. Talvolta sezioni lignee intagliate si uniscono a teste scolpite, altre volte frammenti statuari vengono fissati a oggetti in legno, modellati e patinati a mano. Accanto a queste opere scultoree, un gruppo di disegni sviluppa ulteriormente tali composizioni, traducendo sulla carta le stesse tensioni formali e concettuali. Da questi incontri emergono variazioni dissonanti, “frizioni” nel senso descritto da Édouard Glissant. Le opere, infatti, mettono sotto pressione le tassonomie ereditate: sculture bianche e maschere nere — le prime custodite nei musei archeologici, le seconde relegate alle collezioni etnografiche.

In the “Frictions” series, Nidhal Chamekh creates compositions that bring together Greco-Roman sculptural elements and African “masks.” At times, carved wooden sections join sculpted heads; at others, fragments of statuary are affixed to wooden objects, shaped and patinated by hand. Alongside these sculptural works, a group of drawings further develops these compositions, translating the same formal and conceptual tensions onto paper. From these encounters arise dissonant variations, frictions in the sense described by Édouard Glissant. The works strain inherited taxonomies: white sculptures and Black masks — the former housed in archaeological museums; the latter relegated to ethnographic collections.
