T.K. Madhavan: The Voice Behind the Temple Entry Movement
Even during his student days, T.K. Madhavan had earned a reputation as an excellent orator, and he possessed the same ability to express his ideas effectively through writing. During that period, he contributed numerous articles to newspapers such as New India, Kerala Kaumudi, and Malayala Manorama, as well as magazines such as Bhashaposhini and Mangalodayam. In 1913, when the Eleventh Sreemoolam Praja Sabha was in session, Madhavan prepared a petition on behalf of the then Ezhava representative, Alummoottil Govinda Das. The following year, when Sree Narayana Guru travelled to raise funds for establishing a Sanskrit school at Aluva, Madhavan served as one of the principal campaigners and orators. It was during this period that he began to feel the need to start a newspaper as a platform through which people from all sections of society could bring their problems to the attention of the government and seek solutions. He was elected to the Praja Sabha as an Ezhava representative and served as a member in 1917 and 1918, where he strongly advocated civil equality and promoted interaction among different communities and freedom of expression. T.K. Madhavan occupies an unforgettable place in Kerala’s history as a pioneer of the Temple Entry Movement. He championed temple entry with the aim of eliminating social evils such as theendal (untouchability) and thodeel (restrictions on physical contact), which stood as barriers to civil equality. By around 1916, favourable conditions for the movement had begun to emerge in Kerala, and Madhavan published a book titled Kshethra Praveshanam (Temple Entry), explaining the aims and objectives of the movement. In 1916, at the 32nd session of the Indian National Congress held in Calcutta under the presidency of Annie Besant, a resolution supporting temple entry was passed for the first time, largely as a result of Madhavan’s persistent efforts. The following year, similar resolutions were also passed at the Maharaja’s Assembly in Mumbai.
