Amarnath Sharma, a Baroda-based painter originally from Bokaro, Bihar, completed both his BFA and MFA in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda, graduating in 2002. His practice is rooted in an engagement with urban life, where everyday experiences and social tensions find expression through carefully constructed visual narratives. Beyond his studio practice, Sharma is deeply engaged in teaching, particularly working with children. This interaction brings a sense of renewal to his perspective, influencing his approach with a certain openness and sensitivity. A recipient of awards such as the Budh Bihar Society Award (1995) and the Nasreen Mohamedi Award for Painting (2000), he has also participated in several group exhibitions. He continues to live and work in Baroda.

While his early works engaged with figuration, Kamal Rana has transitioned with remarkable ease into abstraction, retaining fire as the core of his process. His abstract works carry a compelling intensity—fire, for him, symbolizes transformation and passion. Everything it touches is altered, often beyond recognition, and this act of metamorphosis becomes central to his art. Through this, he creates formless forms that echo the unpredictable yet poetic nature of flame. Rana’s pioneering work has earned him recognition in both the India Book of Records (2013) and the Limca Book of Records (2012) for fire painting. He continues to live and work in Vadodara.

K G Subramanyan (1924- 2016)

Shown here are a set of 13 drawings, featuring both ink and watercolor drawings (size approx 6" x 8")

Born in Kerala in 1924, K. G. Subramanyan was a pioneering figure in shaping a post-Independence Indian artistic identity. After studying Economics at Presidency College, Chennai, he trained at Santiniketan under Benode Behari Mukherjee, Nandalal Bose, and Ramkinkar Baij, later continuing his studies at the Slade School of Art, London.

An influential artist, writer, and teacher, Subramanyan worked across diverse mediums—from painting and murals to crafts like pottery, weaving, and toy-making—bridging folk traditions with modernist ideas. His practice evolved from early Santiniketan influences to a distinctive visual language marked by playfulness, narrative depth, and semi-abstraction, later incorporating elements of popular traditions such as glass painting. Over a career spanning nearly seven decades, he exhibited widely and taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M. S. University, Baroda, inspiring generations of artists. He passed away in Vadodara in 2016.

Shibu Natesan (b. Vakkom, Kerala) is a contemporary Indian artist whose practice explores history, identity, and socio-political narratives. Shibu Natesan is part of a generation of artists from Kerala who studied at the College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum, in the early 1980s—a period marked by artistic upheaval and resistance to a rigid, bureaucratic art establishment. His early body of work, notably the series The Futility of Device, draws from meticulously examined feudal histories, presenting relics and symbols of power that echo cycles of aggression.

(Quote by Shibu Natesan as told to Uma Nair, in March 2023, from exhibition titled, "Shibu Natesan: Plein Air Views of India and London", Grosvenor Gallery)

Born in Rajkot, Gujarat, Vinod Shah earned his Master’s degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, where he later taught and eventually headed the Department of Painting. Working primarily in watercolour on paper, often with elements of collage, Shah’s art is marked by a gentle, lyrical quality. His compositions—both figurative and landscape—retain an intentional sense of incompletion, with underlying pencil lines subtly visible through the paint.

Jogen Chowdhury (b. 1939) stands out in modern Indian art for his bold, linear approach to figuration. Though he has worked across subjects like still life and nature, he is most recognized for his striking human forms, built through rhythmic lines and cross-hatching. Often exaggerated and tense, these figures reflect the fragility and distortions within society.

Born in 1937 in Juni Jithardi, Gujarat, Nagji Patel emerged in the post-Independence generation of Indian artists. While many contemporaries explored diverse mediums, Patel remained devoted to sculpture, grounding his practice in a tactile engagement with material. His drawings and sketches extend this sensibility, shaped by memories of rural life, agriculture, and early toy-making. Rooted in nature yet rarely descriptive, his forms hover between abstraction and recognition, emphasizing texture, volume, and the quiet dynamism of organic structures.
