B M Birla Science Centre, Hyderabad in association with ISRO/NRSC conducted the YUVIKA ("YUva VIgyaniK Aryakram") programme. Itis aimed at creating awareness on the emerging trends in science and technology among the young students. The programme is also expected to encourage students to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as their career. Mr. K G Kumar, Director, B M Birla Science Centre interacted with the participants and the gallery space was converted into a hands on class room. Using props and activities he explained basic concepts of sciences and later the participants were taken round the museum.

B M Birla Science Centre in collaboration with CCMB and VITM organized “Gene- Health Connect” a mobile exhibition in the premises of the B M Birla Science Centre complex. The exhibition consists of 20 exhibits with physical and a/v interactives for bringing the concept of genes and their role in the human body, genetic disorders and the present research outcomes on solutions for such disorders.

He presented on the topic “Planetaria and Public Spaces for Science Communication”.The symposium was graced by Dr. Martin George, Former President, International Planetarium Society/Planetarium around the World & Chair of International Development and Elections, International Planetarium Society.

Zero Shadow Day is an amazingly interesting phenomenon to observe. It occurs twice in a year when the sun is directly overhead and thus no shadow of any vertical object can be seen. The phenomenon occurs because of the tilt of the Earth’s axis and its rotation around the sun. This tilt causes the angle of the sun rays to change throughout the year, which in turn shows various length and direction of shadows. The axis about which the earth rotates is tilted at an angle of 23.45 degrees to the plane of the earth's orbital plane and the sun's equator. The earth's axis results in a daily variation of the angle between the earth–sun line and the earth's equatorial plane called the solar declination. The Zero Shadow Day (ZSD) phenomenon occurs when the Sun's declination becomes equal to the latitude of the location. On a zero shadow day, when the sun crosses the local meridian, the sun's rays will fall exactly vertical relative to an object on the ground and one cannot observe any shadow of that object. Zero shadow day happens twice a year for locations between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The latitude of Hyderabad is 17.3850° N. ZSD will be seen in Hyderabad on 9th May 2023 at 12:12 pm and 3rd August 2023. The shadow of any vertical object would disappear at this instant.
You can perform a simple experiment at your home to enjoy this phenomenon. Arrange a flat surface which is directly under the sun. Fix a white paper on the flat surface. Around 12 noon, place a tall opaque object like a PVC pipe or a metal tumbler vertically on the white paper on the flat surface. You will see the shadow of the object. Mark it. Now observe the shadow in interval of 5 minutes and mark them. You will find the shadow moving.
Exactly at 12.12 pm you will find that the shadow of the object will disappear for a few moments. Your shadow will also disappear during this time. Continue observing the shadow. Again it will become visible. Subject to the weather condition and appearance of the Sun the ZSD event will be demonstrated at B M Birla Planetarium on 9th May 2023 from 12 noon onwards till the no shadow period.
