Living Waters Museum, India's first digital museum on water narratives, enters a new phase of its digital journey with the launch of its redesigned website.

Over the past decade, LWM has grown into an evolving ecosystem of exhibitions, water stories, research, projects, people, art and public engagement. The new platform brings these strands together through a more accessible and structured experience, while creating a foundation for the museum’s growing archive and future forms of engagement.

At its core is the idea of a ripple, allowing one encounter to lead to many more, from inspiration and inquiry to reflection and participation.

Beyond Water Futures: The Role of Museums, Networks and Archives in Re-imagining Water

Organised by the Living Waters Museum and the Wipro Foundation, this panel discussion at the Urban Water Forum at IISER (September 1-3, 2026) brought together researchers, activists and artists who engage with water through creative media that goes beyond the conventional discourse of sustainability and governance. By locating their practice in different socio-hydrologies, Radhika Mulay (Flame University, Pune), Vandana Menon and Debashish xx (The River Project, Assam), Uttara V (Curator, Deccan Waters, LWM, Hyderabad) and Sukrit Sen (Outreach and Engagement, Kolkata chapter, LWM) talked about water flows, new paradigms and re-building a decolonising framework for looking at water from an ethical lens that encompasses social equity, gender, vulnerability and marginalisation. However, art alone cannot change the world. As we move into our second decade, LWM seeks to build metrics for understanding our impact on communities, children as future water keepers and policy, evolving from a digital repository to a hybrid water museum focused on participatory research, public engagement and deepening education.

On International Museum Day, join us for the soft launch of the Blue Nile Digital Gallery, an online transdisciplinary storytelling space that delves into the lives and livelihoods of the diverse communities inhabiting the Blue Nile River Basin across Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt. Using a transdisciplinary lens and multimedia, the stories reflect on collective memories around water, traditions, practices and community resilience in the face of climate change and growing development challenges.

Part of the Aquamuse project supported by the Water and Development Partnership Project at IHE-Delft, the webinar brings together voices from researchers, practitioners and artists who have collaborated over the past two years to reimagine water museums, galleries and archives as hubs of intercultural dialogue, knowledge repositories and catalysts for social change.

Aquamuse Retrospective

An evening of stories, reflections, and conversations around water and the women who shape its worlds.
Held at IISER Pune, this Aquamuse Retrospective brought together voices from research, art, and lived experience.

Featuring speakers Sara Ahmed (LWM), Seema Kulkarni (SOPPECOM), Shalini Sharma (IISER), Chaitra Redkar (IISER), and artist Michelle Boyle, tracing questions of access, labour, memory, and power through water.

The talk session was followed by an exhibition featuring the Aquamuse initiative and works of four research fellows, including narratives around the impact of the Bhopal gas tragedy on water contamination. The evening concluded with a musical performance by Sukrit Sen from LWM and Swarnabha (Pune-based artist ), bridging the sounds of the Sundarbans with a contemporary fusion.

On this , we celebrate the journey of our beloved Sea Horse- Tide Tales~Phoenix of the Ocean — crafted with care from discarded waste materials to raise awareness about ocean pollution.

From its debut at the Kaala Ghoda Arts Festival 2025 , to being housed at the , and then lovingly refurbished by the children of Kolkata with the support of the Inner Wheel Club of Central Calcutta, this Sea Horse has finally found its home at Rabindra Sarovar, outside CRC

Grateful to Ms. Vynita Agarwala, president IWCCC and Hon. Councillor, Ward 87 and Sukrit Sen of LWM, kolkata for spearheading and supporting this initiative since the time our horse made it to the city.

Our heartfelt gratitude to Hon. Mayor Firhad Hakim, and Hon. MLA Debashish Kumar for believing in the power of art to inspire change. Together, we continue to build awareness for the people, by the people of Calcutta.

The Living Waters Museum is happy to be a partnering institute for the “Water We Want” Contest 2026, a global competition on water and arts under UNESCO. Students aged 6–25 can submit drawings, videos, poems, songs, and more on freshwater, climate change, and water heritage.
