Before the Immersion

Visarjan is often remembered for the procession—the music, the crowds and the final farewell. But before Ganesha enters the water, there is another important moment: seeking his blessings again.

This tableau presents Ganesha in a richly composed setting, surrounded by attendants and ceremonial details. The carefully modelled figures and painted accents transform the sculpture into a complete festive scene.

Today, as the festival reaches its final day, the scene invites us to look once more at Ganesha as an icon of celebration, artistry and devotion—before he leaves, with the promise of returning again.

For centuries, Ganesha has been shaped in countless forms across India.

This 18th-century bronze from Maharashtra offers one such interpretation—compact, expressive and quietly powerful. Its aged surface carries the marks of time, while the careful modelling reflects the skill of Maharashtra’s devotional metalworkers.

Created during the Maratha and Peshwa era, the sculpture belongs to a period when Ganapati worship received significant patronage, giving rise to a rich tradition of devotional art and metalwork.

In this striking chromolithograph, Shri Mahakaleshwar of Ujjain appears alongside Parvati and Ganesha, with Nandi and the tiger adding to the sacred setting.

But look closely at the people.

The men wear distinctive Shindeshahi-style pagdis, while the women are dressed in nine-yard Nauvari sarees—bringing a distinctly Maharashtrian visual language into an image of the sacred world of Ujjain.

Printed by the Ravi Varma Press, the rich colours, dramatic composition and detailed costumes show why such chromolithographs became so popular across India in the early 20th century.
