Today’s MOG Sunday centred around ‘Fish Curry and Rice’, the landmark publication edited by Claude Alvares that has, for over three decades, documented Goa’s ecological, cultural, and social realities with urgency and care. First published in 1992 and now in its fifth edition, the book has evolved alongside Goa itself, continuing to respond to the changing concerns of the region.
The session opened with reflections by Bongisio, who spoke about ‘Fish Curry and Rice’ not merely as food, but as a metaphor for an entire Goan way of life. Connecting ideas of land, music, community, and belonging, he reflected on the importance of remembering and learning from the landscapes that shape us. His session concluded with a powerful rap performance exploring themes of identity, ecology, and collective responsibility.
Claude Alvares reflected on the journey of the book through its many editions and how emerging ecological and political concerns have reshaped its contents over time. Speaking about issues such as the Mhadei, changing coastlines, forests, flora and fauna, he emphasised the importance of understanding forests as vital infrastructure that sustains life and ecological balance.
Artist Svabhu Kohli spoke about land, memory, and loss, highlighting how art can make environmental conversations more accessible and emotionally resonant. Referring tovarious Goan artists work that has been presented in the book, he reflected on how artistic practices help us imagine and relate to in times of crisis.
The session concluded with a moving monologue by Prashanti Talpankar, who reflected on what it means to “be green” today. Beginning with memories of Goa’s past landscapes and moving into present realities of ecological degradation, she reminded audiences that environmental crises unfold within our homes and communities. Ending with the call “Goenkarano Zaya Zage,” she urged everyone to come together to protect Goa’s future.
Join us at MOG Sundays as we continue to engage with the crucial conversations shaping our times.
