Your final departure in search of the paradox, 2025
Acrylic on canvas
12 x 16 in

“This is a spatial piece. I am obsessed with spaceships and how spaceships can look more feminine. That’s why this has a sensuous appeal. There are eggs on the inside carrying cryogenized humans. There’s a lot of speculative thinking that goes on over here.” - Rithika Pandey.

‘I Seem to Be a Verb’, a solo exhibition by Rithika Pandey is on view at the gallery till March 31.

Drop in between Wed - Sun, from 11am - 8pm.

You last journey through the non-equilibrium system, 2024
Acrylic on canvas
30 x 36 in

“This is a contaminated landscape where the toxic fumes are spewing out from geysers. I’ve gamified this painting in a sense that there is a protagonist who has to make her way through this toxic landscape to enter the portal into safety. It’s an opening where the character can enter into safer spaces and territory. This presents as a possibility to me.” - Rithika Pandey.

Artist works are now on display at The Distillery in Baroda, on view till March 26 as a part of the alumni show for Space Studio’s 20th Anniversary

This exhibition serves as a reflective milestone, looking back at the evolution of practices among some of the artists who have been a part of the programme. It draws on the primary offering of the residency, space, not merely as that of a physical studio, but as an expansive, multifaceted, sometimes indefinable concept that artists continue to navigate through their career. The works on display respond to space in its myriad definitions, geographical landscapes, cosmic expanses, urban environments, personal boundaries, liminal thresholds, and abstract realms that transcend the tangible.

Technology for Turiya, 2025
Acrylic on canvas
24 x 36 in

“I wanted to think about technology in my artworks from a more holistic and sacred point of view. Because technology has become the biggest contaminant in our age, we need to start seeing it as a potential collaborator for the advancement of our collective evolution. This is a luminous piece of technology that I have placed in a contaminated landscape. At the back you see the land is ravaged with heat and fires. But this is a sentient piece of technology which when approached with reverence, helps to elevate your consciousness. Turiya is a state beyond sleep where it is believed that you can actually reach the state of godhood.” - Rithika Pandey.

Enlightenment device, 2025
Acrylic on canvas
16 x 24 in

“This artwork is inspired from the conceptual artist Walter Pichler’s artwork ‘Teeny Helmet’. He imagined a portable device which a person could wear on their heads and watch TV. It had a television encased inside it. However, I
wanted to extend the use of that device to make an enlightened person. It kind of plays on the idea of how technology exposes us to so much information that we think we’re filled with knowledge, but we’re actually just lost.” - Rithika Pandey.

Return of the daylight savers, 2024
Acrylic on cold pressed paper

‘If we are constantly written and re-written by the worlds we move through, how may we understand contamination as an active creative force? How might these new adaptations shape our ways of being in the world? To soften may just be the strategy we need to make sense of the contradictions we presently face. To seem to be a verb at this moment is to accept that we are weathered by the world, our bodies, and those of others, mutate alongside the climates we have made, the atmosphere enters us; contamination becomes intimacy; collapse becomes a strange form of relation. We are constantly in negotiation with our becoming’s, and the work of staying human has never been more complex and demanding.’

Sky-eater saves the polluted body, 2024
Acrylic on canvas
16 x 24 in

“This artwork embodies an energy of compassion. A lot of my work is inspired by Buddhist mindset and my own spiritual practices. I’m trying to hint at heart centered awareness with a play of the elements. A polluted body is exuding toxic fumes, the rays of the heart are saving her and the sky is wafting out. That’s why she’s called Sky Eater, she eats the sky. There’s also a Buddhist breathwork technique which is called sky eating and that’s how the title came in.” - Rithika Pandey.

Compassion (After Ernesto Neto), 2024
Acrylic on canvas
16 x 24 in

“As the title suggests this work is inspired from a piece by Ernesto Neto called Humanoids. What I loved about that piece was how people were embraced by a soft object. I wanted to explore what that would mean to me, and I really saw that as an embrace of compassion. The character here is in a safe cocoon, processing and regulating its nervous system.”
- Rithika Pandey.
