Ever wondered how a landscape shifts as you stop and stare? Do the trees and birds echo your thoughts?

Join us for a workshop and a guided walkthrough navigating the visual and sonic elements in ‘Landscape Plays’, and linger on what draws your attention. Inspired by Heiner Goebbels’ approach to spectatorship, the session encourages a way of seeing that is unstructured and self-directed, much like encountering a landscape. Participants are invited to experiment with materials, textures, and objects to reflect on their own relationships with art, space, and environment.

This workshop is inspired by the ongoing exhibition ‘Landscape Plays’ by Heiner Goebbels, presented by the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai.

Zainab Tambawalla is a Mumbai-based artist, illustrator and urban sketcher. And... SCENE!

Join us for an immersive workshop where children hop into a world of stories that unfold like a landscape - layered, shifting, and open to interpretation. Using Heiner Goebbels’ compositions as a starting point, participants will explore how sound, movement, objects, and imagination come together to create a theatrical experience. No prior experience with theatre or dance is required.

Through guided prompts and playful exercises, participants will learn to use their surroundings and everyday objects as tools to build visual and physical landscapes with their bodies. The workshop invites participants to listen, respond, and build a world together!

This workshop is inspired by the ongoing exhibition ‘Landscape Plays’ by Heiner Goebbels, presented by the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai.

Dipna Daryanani is a Mumbai-based movement artist, educator, facilitator and children’s author. A closer look at the hardbound publication accompanying Fieldnotes: Tomorrow Was Here Yesterday, Jitish Kallat’s 2011 exhibition at Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum.

The book features a foreword by Tasneem Zakaria Mehta and Inside the Time Machine: Jitish Kallat’s Negotiations with Museum Space by Ranjit Hoskote.

Hoskote offers a deeply layered reading of the exhibition as a negotiation with museum space, where archive, city, colonial memory, civic and political history, and the artist’s longstanding engagement with time converge.

Through images, texts, and details of Kallat’s interventions across the museum, the publication revisits the institution as a living site of time, history, and active public encounter.

The book is available in the Museum Shop.

'Tickets', 'tikas' or 'chaaps' were colourful textile labels attached to bales of cloth coming from all over the world, and sent to markets from Mumbai, Manchester and as far as Vietnam. They were created using chromolithography, a revolutionary printing technique that democratised access to colour imagery at the time.

Join us for a session with Steam Academy, to learn the science behind this innovative technique, and how printers created new designs, experimented with replication to make bold, colourful, and iconic prints that still continue to dazzle!

The session is inspired by the ongoing exhibition, 'Ticket, Tika, Chaap: The Art of the Trademark in Indo-British Textile Trade', presented by the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in collaboration with the Museum of Art and Photography, Bengaluru and Impart.

Dr Bhau Daji Museum presents ‘Landscape Plays’, the first solo exhibition in India by internationally acclaimed artist, composer and theatre-maker, Heiner Goebbels, in collaboration with Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, Mumbai from 15th March to 31st May, 2026.

Goebbels’ works situate contemporary sound within the praxis of performing and visual art through the creation of site-specific immersive installations. Visitors are invited to move beyond passive recognition of sounds and images and actively navigate the interplay of light, sound, and movement. The exhibition moves away from the traditional narrative arc to foreground unfolding events within a play in an indeterminate manner, allowing for a fluid, self reflexive experience rather than a story explicitly told.

'Ticket, Tika, Chaap: The Art of the Trademark in the Indo-British Textile Trade' previewed yesterday at the Museum!

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Museum of Art and Photography (MAP), Bengaluru and Impart, and curated by Nathaniel Gaskell and Shrey Maurya.

Bringing intricate and evocative textile tickets into focus, the exhibition explores the new visual language that emerged in the cloth shops that had increasingly begun selling British and Indian mill-made cloth in the bustling bazaars of the 19th and early-20th centuries in India. Glossy, brightly coloured paper labels, bearing elaborate images accompanied each bolt of cloth that arrived from Britain. The textile ticket is a testament to how images shape perception, value, and desire– a story as relevant today as it was over a century ago.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us. Stay tuned for upcoming walkthroughs and workshops.

On view till 7 June 2026.

"This is one of my favourite museums - anywhere in the world! The displays are done with such rich thought and care and they so clearly and interestingly convey the purpose of the original museum and what we can learn from it today. And a great exhibition, thoughtful and visually effective. I enjoyed it very much."
Mark Jones, Former Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the British Museum, London, United Kingdom.

The museum was honoured to welcome Mark Jones, the former director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the British Museum, with his family and friends. Managing Trustee & Director, Tasneem Mehta, walked them through the museum and the ongoing exhibition, 'Weaving Flowers, Wandering Stains, and Floating Silks' by Archana Hande.
