Across cultures, plants are more than part of our natural environment, they are woven into our food, traditions, landscapes and identities.

For Mumbai’s Pathare Prabhu community, one such plant is the Bilimb (Averrhoa bilimbi), locally also known as “Bimble”. Known for its distinctly sour fruit, Bilimb has long been an important and cherished ingredient in Pathare Prabhu cuisine. Once commonly found in the gardens of Pathare Prabhu homes in Mumbai, the tree has become increasingly rare in the city, even as its fruit remains deeply cherished by the community.

On 11 September 2026, a Bilimb sapling was planted on the premises of CSMVS by members of the Pathare Prabhu community, a living reminder of this relationship between community, food and memory.

The tree commemorates the exhibition, 'Roots of a City: The Pathare Prabhus of Mumbai', carrying its story and legacy beyond the gallery and we hope, into generations to come.

The Futures of Mumbai | Symposium

On 29 August 2026, CSMVS hosted The Futures of Mumbai, a day-long symposium that brought together multidisciplinary voices to reflect on the forces shaping Mumbai’s future.

Through the keynote address, individual presentations and a concluding panel discussion, the symposium explored the city through the interconnected lenses of infrastructure, culture, economics, ecology and citizenship. At the heart of these conversations were Mumbaikars themselves and questions of identity, belonging, cosmopolitanism and how we imagine the city as it moves towards 2047 and beyond.

The symposium featured a keynote by Sidharth Bhatia, with presentations by Bittu Sahgal, Hussain Indorewala, Sameer Kulavoor and Shilpa Phadke.

The day concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Fiona Fernandez, featuring Mustansir Dalvi, Hussain Indorewala, Sameer Kulavoor and Shilpa Phadke, bringing together different perspectives on the challenges and possibilities that will define the Mumbai of the Future.

We thank all our speakers, panelists and participants who joined us for a day of conversations about the city we inhabit and the future we need to create for it.

Independence Day was celebrated at CSMVS with ‘Tiranga Tarane’, a special musical performance by students of Balmohan Vidyamandir on 14th August.

Through songs of freedom and patriotism, the young performers brought the Rotunda Gallery alive, marking the occasion with music, pride and the spirit of Independence Day. 🇮🇳

Reflections on Ancient Egypt: A Three-Day Lecture Series

Three days of insightful conversations, engaging lectures, and meaningful academic exchange brought the world of Ancient Egypt closer to Mumbai.

Our sincere thanks to Dr. Eman Khalifa, International Scholar, Archaeologist, and Professor at the University of Cairo, for sharing her invaluable knowledge and expertise throughout this lecture series. Through lectures on pottery, archaeometry, and scientific approaches to archaeological research, she offered fascinating insights into Egypt's rich archaeological heritage while drawing meaningful connections between the ancient civilizations of Egypt and India.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to H.E. Dahlia Tawakol, Consul General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Mumbai, and the Consulate General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Mumbai for their valued partnership and support in making this academic lecture series possible. Their collaboration has strengthened cultural and academic dialogue between Egypt and India.

We also thank all the students, researchers, educators, and history enthusiasts who joined us over these three days of learning and exchange. We look forward to welcoming you to many more lectures, discussions, and programmes that inspire curiosity, foster cross-cultural understanding, and celebrate our shared heritage.
